Emilio Botín presents together with Fernando
Alonso a research project in Columbia on the
innovation of automotive technology
■ Banco Santander will invest 150,000 USD in the research project, which will
include a stay of a student from Columbia at the Ferrari headquarters in
Maranello.
■ The bank’s new agreements with the universities of Yale and Princeton
increase its collaboration in education and research and its international
presence, among others.
New York, 5 June 2014. Emilio Botín, chairman of Banco Santander; Fernando Alonso, driver of
Scuderia Ferrari, and Pat Fry, chief engineer of the team, presented last night at Columbia
University (New York) a research project on innovation in the field of automotive technology with
Scuderia Ferrari. The bank will invest 150,000 USD in the programme, which will include a stay for a
student from this university at the headquarters of Ferrari in Maranello (Italy).
During the event, which had the participation of engineering and applied science students, Emilio
Botín said: “This is a unique opportunity to know from first hand all the ‘secrets’ about the number
one competitions cars manufacturer in the world. If you have ever dreamed about working for a

Fernando Alonso added: “I hope that you make the most of this opportunity, which can open many

Yale and Banco Santander increase their support of arts and international education
Furthermore, Peter Salovey, president of Yale University, is hosting Emilio Botín today on the
university campus to take stock and further the relations, by means of three agreements, that the
academic institution and the bank have held through Santander Universities since 2011.
On the one hand, Banco Santander renews its support of Yale University’s Art Gallery, and its
dedication to the study, conservation and presentation of the recently discovered painting “La
educación de la Virgen”, by Diego Velázquez.
The bank continues to support the Yale World Fellows Program on leadership development, which
targets students engaged with global change; the “Yale College-Banco Santander International
Mobility Program”, which includes grants to study Spanish and Portuguese, and for those
interested in studying Arabic languages, and internship, study and research grants in the context

Alliance of Research Universities (IARU).
The partnership between Yale University and Banco Santander is extended with two specific
agreements. The first concerns the “Governance and Leadership for Women in Africa” project, in
which Yale University and the Women for Africa Foundation will develop, with the bank’s support,
a strategic programme for female leaders in African governments.
The second agreement concerns Banco Santander’s support for the collaboration between Yale
University and Qatar Foundation in the context of the WISE Learners Voice Program. According to
this agreement, 30 students from the “Learners Voice” programme will receive training in
leadership by Yale University and its “Yale World Fellows” programme.
Networks, seminars and international mobility, pillars of the relationship with Princeton
Today, Emilio Botín is also meeting Christopher Eisgruber, president of Princeton University, in
order to renew and extend the collaboration between the university and Banco Santander, through
Santander Universities. Their relations, which began in 2011, focus partly on supporting a Global
Programme of Collaboration Networks, which connects Princeton University with educational
institutions worldwide.
Part of Banco Santander’s contribution also goes to creating global seminars abroad, which
promotes the awarding of grants and the analysis of issues of global relevance supervised by the
Institute for International and Regional Studies at Princeton University.
Another line of collaboration is a mobility programme for the university’s undergraduate students,
which enables them to study abroad. Those awarded are selected according to the guidelines of
the Princeton University’s Office of International Programs.
