Cardiovascular Diseases
According to the World Heart Federation, more than 17.3 million people die of
cardiovascular diseases each year.
3. Causes of Cardiovascular Diseases
Unhealthy diet and physical
inactivity, which lead to:
• Obesity, high blood pressure,
high blood glucose, and high
blood lipids.
• Other factors are: excessive
use of tobacco and alcohol,
stress, and hereditary
predisposition.
4. Some Common Symptoms
• Pain/discomfort in the centre of
the chest, arms, left shoulder,
elbows, jaw, and back.
• Shortness of breath, feeling light-
headed or fainting, loss of
coordination and difficulty
speaking.
• Nausea, fatigue, confusion.
• Sudden difficulty in seeing, or
numbness along one side of the
body.
If you experience these symptoms, you may be having a stroke, or heart attack,
or rheumatic fever. It is best to seek emergency medical care in this situation.
5. Preventing Cardiovascular Diseases
• Eat a balanced and healthy diet.
• Exercise regularly.
• Avoid tobacco.
• Check your risk of heart disease
regularly by monitoring your blood
pressure, blood sugar and blood
lipids.

are preventable!
