Chapter of Summary
 Many of the students were uncomfortable with Hannah’s essay.They
were not happy with Mrs. Hansen choice of Hannah to play the role of
Lady Liberty.Their parents even went to the principal’s office to
complain about it.
 Mrs. Hansen entered the class and announced that Hannah had
declined the role of Lady Liberty.Some students were glad to hear of
it.During lunch break,Richard found Hannah at her usual secluded
place and asked for the reason of her decline.He told Hannah she
should fight for what she had earned.But Hannah felt remorseful for
starting a little war in Turtle Lake even though her essay was about
making peace.Then Richard also decided to quit his role as the
Doughboy as he could not tolerate the people’s meanness and he
didn’t want Hannah to face the situation alone.Hannah was grateful
for Richard’s decision.

 When Richard went to tell Mrs. Hansen that he was turning down the
part of the Doughboy, Mrs. Hansen was disappointed and wanted to
cancel the whole competition but Richard reminded her of the soldiers
who were fighting in the war.
 The next day, Mrs.Hansen announced that Richard had turned down
the role of the Doughboy.She had also found two replacements to
take over Hannah and Richard’s roles after re-reading the essays.The
new Miss Liberty was Millie and the new Doughboy was Herbie.The
class looked at the two students in astonishment.
 Hannah invited Richard to her home for supper that night and Richard
accepted the invitation.When he met Gus,he told Gus he would not be
home for dinner.Gus was disgusted with Richard as he heard people
saying he’s not patriotic and called him a traitor.Richard was dejected
and wondered why it was impossible to do the right thing and make
everyone happy.

 When Richard arrived at Hannah’s house,he was welcomed by her
parents.Their house was small inside but very cosy.There were many old
and leather bound books in German.Richard had an enjoyable
conversation with Mr.Schermer about poetry and the great cities.They ate
the delicious meal while listening to Beethoven music.
 It was dark when Richard went home.He found his father waiting for
him.When he reached home his father say that their need to talk.
