  1. 1. WIRELESS POWER TRANSMISSION
  2. 2. OBJECTIVES:-  What is Wireless power Transmission?  History of WPT.  Types of WPT.  Advantages.  Disadvantages.
  3. 3. WHAT IS WPT ?  Wireless power or wireless energy transmission is the transmission of electrical energy from a Power source to an electrical load without man-made conductors. (OR)  Simply the transmission of energy from one place to another without using wires.
  4. 4. HISTORY  In late 1980s Nikola Tesla worked on Induction techniques.  He was able to transfer energy from one coil to another coil.  He managed to light 200 lamps from a distance of 40 km.  The idea of Tesla was taken into research after 100 years by the project named “ WITRICITY”.
  5. 5. TYPES OF WPT  WPT can be used in 2 ways.  For nearer purpose: o Inductive coupling . o Resonant Inductive coupling. o Air ionization.  For farther purpose: o Microwave power transmission. o Laser power transmission.
  6. 6. INDUCTIVE COUPLING  Primary and secondary coils are not connected with wires.  Energy is transferred due to mutual induction.  Examples are wireless charging pad, transformer etc.
  7. 7. AIR IONIZATION  Air ionizes at high field.  Needed field is 2.11MV/m.  Natural example is lightening.  Not feasible for practical implementation.
  8. 8. Microwave Power Transmission  Transfers high power from one place to another.  Steps: o Electrical energy to microwave energy. o Capturing microwaves using antenna. o Microwave to electrical energy.
  9. 9. ADVANTAGES  Elimination of high power transmission lines.  Reduction in cost because of not using expensive wires.  It increases the portability of electrical devices as it removes wires.  Reduction in power losses.
  10. 10. DISADVANTAGES  Interference with existing communication systems.  To much expensive for bigger scale implementation.  Microwaves hazardous to human life.
