2. Shock is a life-threatening medical condition as a
result of insufficient blood flow throughout the body.
Shock often accompanies severe injury or illness.
Medical shock is a medical emergency and can lead
to other conditions such as lack of oxygen in the
body's tissues (hypoxia), heart attack (cardiac arrest)
or organ damage.
2
3. Cont….
It requires immediate treatment as symptoms
can worsen rapidly.
Medical shock is different than emotional or
psychological shock that can occur following a
traumatic or frightening emotional event.
3
4. Causes of shock
There are several main causes of shock:
Heart conditions (heart attack, heart
failure)
Heavy internal or external bleeding, such as
from a serious injury or rupture of a blood
vessel
4
5. Cont….
Dehydration, especially when severe or related
to heat illness.
Infection (septic shock)
Severe allergic reaction (anaphylactic shock)
5
6. Types of shock
1. Septic shock results from bacteria multiplying in
the blood and releasing toxins. Common causes of
this are pneumonia, urinary tract infections, skin
infections (cellulites), intra-abdominal infections
(such as a ruptured appendix), and meningitis.
6
7. Cont..
2. Anaphylactic shock is a type of severe
hypersensitivity or allergic reaction. Causes
include allergy to insect stings, medicines, or
foods (nuts, berries, seafood), etc.
3. Cardiogenic shock happens when the heart is
damaged and unable to supply sufficient blood
to the body. This can be the end result of a
heart attack or congestive heart failure.
7
8. Cont..
4. Hypovolemic shock is caused by severe blood
and fluid loss, such as from traumatic bodily
injury, which makes the heart unable to pump
enough blood to the body, or severe anemia
where there is not enough blood to carry
oxygen through the body.
8
9. Cont..
5. Neurogenic shock is caused by spinal cord
injury, usually as a result of a traumatic
accident or injury.
6.Peritonial shock: peritoneal cavity causing
acute inflammation and severe infection
9
10. Cont..
Carcinogenic shock happens when the heart is
damaged and unable to supply sufficient blood
to the body. This can be the end result of a
heart attack or congestive heart failure.
10
11. Cont..
Hypovolemic shock is caused by severe blood
and fluid loss, such as from traumatic bodily
injury, which makes the heart unable to pump
enough blood to the body, or severe anemia
where there is not enough blood to carry
oxygen through the body.
11
12. Symptoms
Sings and symptoms of shock may include:
Feeling faint
Looks pale
Weak and rapid pulse
Feels sick and may vomit
12
13. Cont…
May be thirsty from loss of body fluids
(mainly from burns, bleeding vomiting and
diarrhea).
Unconsciousness.
13
14. Basic Life Support(BLS) role
The BLS workers manage shock this methods
until the hospital and full medical treatment:
1. Make certain victim's airway is open using
head tilt chin lit to open airway.
2.Seek medical assistance immediately
14
15. Cont…
3. If back, neck or head injury suspected do not
move victim, if no back , neck or head injury
suspected lay victim face up and elevate feet
about 12 inches.
4. loosen any tight clothing
15
16. Cont…
5. keep area quite and allow the victim plenty
of fresh air
6. protect underneath surface of the body from
heat or cold
7. do not give victim anything to eat or drink if
victim vomits.

18. prevention
Learn ways to prevent heart disease, injuries,
dehydration and other causes of shock.
If you have a known allergy, carry an
epinephrine pen, which your doctor can
prescribe. Avoid severe allergy triggers.
