Who we are:
‘Avabe’ in Ebira Tao speaking language of Middle belt in Northern Nigeria means ‘come
together’, ‘join hands’, ‘collective’, ‘collaborate’ etc.
Avabe Initiative for Community Development incorporated on 23rd December 2013 in
Nigeria with a mandate to work as a National Non-Governmental, non for profits
Organization in partnership with communities, government and non-governmental
agencies, academic institutions, local and international organisations to ensure good
evidence supports delivery of effective services to Women, Girls and Children. Together,
we work to ensure access to education that increase enrolments and skills;
empowerment and structured groups for visibility and voice for prominence; advocates
for implementation of policies relating to the target groups and other aids to achieve
improved literacy, skills acquisition and empowerment towards realization of their
economic growth and social inclusion that makes them self-reliant. Currently works in
Kano and Kogi States of Nigeria.
VISION
To create enabling environment for proper implementation of policies and frameworks
related to the health of women and youth towards realisation of their self-reliance and
improved educational standard of children.
MISSION
To provide adequate information and mobilise women and youth on skill acquisition as
well as capacity building with a view to making them contribute positively to the
development of their communities and invariably advanced children.
AIMS AND OBJECTIVES
Avabe Initiative is mandated by law to carry out the following activities:
To collaborate with Educational/ Social Institutions and relevant agencies to give
non-formal education; sensitize and educate children, Women and Youth on
Social Issues.
To Advocate for implementation of policies for Children, Women and Youth
To build capacity of women and youth with skills for empowerment and self-
reliance.

To support girl/child education and ensure conducive learning environment that
improves the educational standard of all children in schools.

Provide Non-Formal Education:
Increasing enrolment by creating accessibility and community engagement for literacy
and skills centres that meets women, girls and children demand. The uniqueness of
these activities is our ability to draw these children and girls from streets and unwilling
parents for 9 and 6 months orientation and basic literacy respectively. The beneficiary
children are then enrolled by Avabe Initiative into nearest government schools while the
girls receive certificates and encouraged to join the post literacy class or acquire skills.
This process revolves.

Sensitize and Mobilize Women, Children, Girls and Youth on Social Issues:
Enlightening citizenry on government/organization’s Educational/Social policies; this has
significant implications for the success of such policies especially in regards to literacy,
capacity building campaigns and social/health issues.
Improving capacity of Women, girls and Youth with Skills and Empowerment
towards self-reliance:
Responding to humanitarian needs that increases delivery of services that reduces
vulnerability and poverty. Women, girls and youths are given skills and empowered
for economic growth that enables them meets family’s social and health needs.

programmes more sustainable by training and retraining the facilitators for efficiency..
Advocate for Implementation of Policies for Children, Girls, Women and Youth:
Mobilising Administrators, parliamentarians, Schools, media and civil society in both rural
and urban areas of operating states to formulate/ implement pol
strengthen education and social systems
which enhances Adolescent girls/child education; women and girls literacy and creates
skills and employment.
Operational Research through collaboration with Educational/ Social institutions
and relevant agencies
Going forward through scaling up strategy we will be conducting research, testing new
approaches and assessing new technologies to strengthen education system and
delivery of effective interventions based on evidence and experience from our
programmes.
We also work on:
Encouraging and Partaking in Schools’ Social events
Boosting morale of pupils/students through engagement in social activities which also
stimulates interpersonal relationships amongst them and schools in general.

Hence, higher enrolments, minimal drop-out that signify educational achievement and
improvement in beneficiary social and health status.
BOARD OF TRUSTEES
Avabe Initiative is governed by a Board of Trustees, which meets quarterly and for its
Annual General Meeting (AGM), once in a year. Our Finance unit and the independent
Auditor monitors the finances of the organisation, internal and external audit are carried
out at least quarterly, and make recommendations to the Board of Trustees. The Board
of Trustees takes the major strategic decisions for the organisation. Every year Trustees
are invited to visit programmes in the field to ensure they are fully informed about Avabe
Initiative’s activities at States level. Day-to-day operational decision-making is delegated
to the Chief Executive Officer, who, with other Executive team of Avabe Initiative for
Community Development, runs the organisation.

Alhaji Yussuff M.J Onipe (Chairman)
Alhaji Yussuff M.J Onipe is an experienced Administrator, a Monitoring and Evaluation
Specialist that served under one of the UK's Department for International Development
programme (PRRINN MNCH). The programme achieved in reviving immunization that
helped millions of children and saved life of mothers and new born child under Maternal
and New Child Health Initiative in Northern Nigeria. Yussuff M.J Onipe was a member of
the team that recently conducted a survey on Polio Eradication Impact (PEI) in Three
Northern States of Jigawa, Katsina and Zamfara. The report could be found in global
health record. Previously, Yussuff M.J Onipe was the National Logistician at Partnership
in Revival of Routine Immunization in Northern Nigeria between 2007 and 2013; He was
Deputy Manager at Kapital Insurance Company Limited now known as Unity Kapital. In
2008 he was appointed the President of Ebira Peoples Association (EPA), Kano State
Branch. In December 2010 he was awarded certificate of service to his immediate
community by Okengwe Development Association (ODA) where he served as the
National Publicity Secretary. A two Masters degrees holder in Business Administration

and Development Studies; He is the current Public Relation Officer, Nigeria Institute of
management, Kano Chapter and an Associate member of the Institute.
Dr Fatimah Adamu
Dr Fatimah Adamu, a Doctor of PhD and the current National Programme Manager of a
UK aid programme - Women for Health (W4H) with National Office in Kano but covers 5
Northern states of Nigeria. She has worked as Social Development Advisor, under
PRRINN-MNCH, a DFID funded programme and managed by Save the Children, 2009-
2012 (then she was on leave from Usman Danfodio University Sokoto); leader of the
demand side team and activities of the programme including community mobilization,
communication, voice and accountability and equity and social inclusion. Dr Fatimah
Adamu was the Director, Planning, Research and Statistics, National Centre for Women
Development, Abuja, 2007- 2008; In charge of the planning, research and contract for
the centre. She was the Policy Analyst on Gender and Social Development with
Independent Policy Group (A Think Tank group for Mr President, Federal Republic of
Nigeria under Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, Oct. 2004- Feb 2006; In-charge of gender and
equity issues. She was the Assistant National Secretary, Federation of Muslim Women
Associations in Nigeria (FOMWAN), 2005-2010. She was also a TAG member,
Partnership for Reproductive Health Research Initiative, Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria,
2008- to date. Dr Fatimah Adamu was the Coordinator, Research on Transforming
Education for Girls in Northern Nigeria (TEGIN), funded by Actionaid and Comic Relief
UK in Collaboration with Usman Danfodiyo University Sokoto: 2009- to date. She was
also a Member of Constitutional Amendment Committee (CONFAB) under President
Goodluck Johnathan.
Professor Ahmed O Abere
Prof. Ahmed O Abere was a visiting Lecturer/Scholar to University of Utara Malaysia;
College of Arts & Sciences in August 2010-2011. He was at various time the Dean or
Head of Department of History at Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA), Kaduna. Prof.
Ahmed Abere, before becoming a professor in 2009, he was an Associate Professor
(2006-2009). He received so many Academic Awards amongst which are: Professor
Michael Crowther Award for the Best Graduating Student in Modern African History,
1987 Bayero University Kano, Nigeria. He also got the CCSE Expert on Social Sciences,
Nov. 2010 Canadian Center for Sciences & Education, Canada. Prof. Ahmed Abere also
won the International Scholar on Middle Eastern Studies, by Institute of Tun Dr Mahathir
Mohamad’s Thought (IPDM), University Utara Malaysia & Association of Malaysian
Professors, 10th April 2011, Malaysia. Prof. Ahmed Abere is a member of Global Team
of CPI Publishers of International Journal of Business & Social Sciences, & Int’l Journal
of Sciences & Engineering, USA. He is also a member, Historical Society of Nigeria
(HSN)

Dr Abimbola Williams
Dr Abimbola Williams is a public health physician with extensive experience in
programme management, primary health care including maternal newborn and child
health and family planning, HIV/AIDS and health sector development. She has worked
with government at all levels, BASICS/ USAID, with UNICEF at the regional office in
Kenya, as well as PATHS/DFID in Nigeria. She has co-authored and contributed to the
development of several important publications. She is currently the Newborn and Child
Survival Adviser with Save the Children Nigeria, providing technical support and
advocating for improved policy environment for the integration and scale up of Newborn
care, particularly in the Northern Nigeria, as part of a large DFID programme,
PRRINN/MNCH (Programme for Reviving Routine Immunization and Maternal, Newborn
and Child Health).
Dr Sani Mohammed
Dr Sani Mohammed is the Medical Director of Godiya Clinics and Maternity LTD, Kano.
He has worked as the Casualty Officer at Aminu Kano General Hospital, Kano (1985-
1990); He was the Chief Medical Officer, In charge of Sir Mohammed Sanusi Hospital,
Kano from 1990 -1991. Dr Sani Mohammed was the Medical Officer that led Kano state
Hajj Operations during 1988 and 1990 Hajj Operations. He was a member of Federal
government Committee set up to rehabilitate 5 blocks of Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital,
Kano in 1989 – 1991.
Barrister Sule Joseph Gani
S. J Gani, a lawyer of 23 years standing with PGDM and Masters in Business
Administration. A member of the Nigeria Bar Association and also a member of the
Nigeria institute of Management. He is also a director in Gamma Associates, a
management consulting company with Headquarters in Kano.
SOURCES OF FUNDS/FINANCE (As Amended)
Avabe Initiative has being working under self-sponsored programmes; the funds used so
far are direct contribution from the Board of Trustees. However, following the constitution
amendment we made recently, it is our hope to begin sourcing funds as follows:
Funds from government for contractual works done or grants from multi-lateral
institutions and inter-governmental Organizations and other national and
international institutions, agencies, etc;
Contributions/grants from non-governmental sources; including foundations and
individuals;
Funds from Consultancy services and Registration fees.
The Chairman may also accept assistance on behalf of the AVABE INITIATIVE
FOR COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT particularly fellowships from multi-lateral,
