Describes how a coal based thermal power plant destroys its surroundings. The presentation pertains to Udupi Power Corporation Ltd., (a LANCO subsidiary) based at Yellur village, near Padubidri, Udupi dist, Karnataka
This presentation tries to summarises the saga of destruction of UPCL , a subsidiary of LANCO of Andhra.
It is unfortunate that this picturesque place was selected for a Coal Based Thermal POWER PLANT. I really wonder what was the special criteria. It is away from post, it was away from Rail road (till recent past)
The beautiful Padubidri area
Another tranquil scean of the area
One of the natural ponds of the area. In fact the Engineer who had visited the place to survey the area prior to drafting an EIA for NTPC plant some 25 years ago, said that this is a sensitive area and not fit for a Coal Based Thermal power plant. No wonder he lost his job.
And then the destruction starts
The aerial view of the area where the TPP is now located. Note paddy fields and forest too towards western side of the area.
The forest was mercilessly cut that too in a short time
It has been estimated that the value of timber cut was to the tune of Rs 20 crores. Repeated appeals and reminders through RTI and other means finally compelled the Forest Department to slap afine of Rs ONE crore only and the case was hushedup.
Another aerial view of the area, Note Suzlon on the south west.
The Aerial view of UPCL. This has been constructed at a place where there was a forest. One can still see the paddy fields. But their EIA sates that this was a barren field. This view shows the Thermal power plant, the Ash ‘pond’ is some two km to the east. The Company does not have a valid PanchayathLicence, or required clearances from MoEF. They have practically violated every norm.
Full view of UPCL along with Ash pond. Protest from local bodies did not have any affect. A suit filed in Karnataka High court never came up for hearing, and in the meantime, cunningly the promoters- the LANCO, group constructed the plant.
The unit has started functioning. It is using Sea water for cooling and this water is let into cooling towers and one can see heavy mist raising from one of the cooling towers. This Sea water loaded mist along with Fly ash has converted the surrounding area in to hell. Plants are dying, open wells are contaminated with sea water, incidence of respiratory diseases have increased, metal structures are corroding.
Initially this is how the company was dumping ash.
The fly ash was carried away by the wind. Of course, now , after repeated agitations the Company is letting out the Fly Ash with (Sea) water.
Fly ash covered leaves
Leaves of Areca nut plants were ‘burnt’
The fly ash and sea water mist loaded air burnt coconut leaves as well.
Finally almost an year later the Pollution control Board Person visited the area and gave a report, which just lists the grievances of people, but does not substantiate it suitably.
Slide showing Metal structures corroding, Fly ash on roof top, Sea Water contaminated wells, and Children going to school with their nose covered to avoid fly Ash.
Slide showing Galvanized Iron sheets which last for more than 15 years in this Coastal area – getting corroded and crumpling within 6 monts after the Power plant started functioning.
Coal washing contaminating local streams.
Shock and shame, was one of the successful strategies in US. People living in the vicinity of a Industry get affected and are ‘SHOCKED’ They then expose the Management, who will then experience ‘SHAME’ . But unfortunately the UPCL management are shameless. They haven’t even apologized for the damages they have caused, let alone talk about the compensating the affected.
Children still have to walk with their nose covered to avoid Fly Ash.
Shree ShreePejavarSwamijii took lot of interest in the developments, though the company had defied him till date. He visited the site to have first hand experience.
But the officials of the company had do not have even an iota of Shame and they are bent on and happy to have confused the Seear. Just look at the cantankerous smile on the face of one of the person in charge. This is all because of rampent corruption- they have bought several MLA’s, MP’s and Higherofficcials.
Coal based thermal power plants are biggest source of pollution- Carbon Di Oxide, Fly Ash, Ground Water contamination, spreading of Radioactive wastes and also dispersal of Heavy metal residues including salts of Mercury. Besides the these plants are very inefficient – loose more than 70% of energy in the coal they burn.
There are many alternate energy sources. Run of the river – the force of perennial Rapids – without construction of Dams.
Solar energy Harnessing deices like Solar chimney, best suited for our Country, and a system which enables decentralized generation of electricity, and this is not a high tech design meaning it can be installed and manages in any village generating income for the village and also emploiment.
Some of the more sophisticated Solar Energy Harvesters like Solar Parabolic Trough systems, which are now available on turn key installation basis. Or Small Solar Parabolic Dishes – a technique with which our own BHEL- has excellent experience.
The other alternative is Wave energy, which is one of the most concentrated source of Energy available on the plant and more important, the one which can supply power day and night – as long as Sun and Moon last.
The powerful Wave whose density is measured in terms of 20 to 30 kW/m2, while the Solar energy is in the range of 5 to 8 kW/m2
A Wave power Harnessing device designed by an Inventor from Udupi. The Buoys pump air into compressor, and this air runs a Generator. The design is modular.
This is my design for harnessing Wave energy. It pumps water to a reservoir on top of small hillock (or building), and the water thus pumped using Wave energy runs a conventional hydroelectric generator to produce over 100 MW of Grid interactive energy at one single installation. Depending on space available, the installation can even generate 1000 MWs or more.
Whatever may be method of using renewable resources to generate the versatile Electrcity –on which the present Civilization is totally dependent on- we should never forget that we are living only because other animals – small or big – are ‘turning’ the life sustaining biogeochemical cycles – without their combined actions we will not have Oxygen to breath – returning minerals to the soil and so many other life sustaining activities.
