7. Kennedy Quote - 1968 ‘ The Gross National Product counts air pollution and cigarette advertising, and ambulances to clear our highways of carnage. It counts special locks for our doors and the jails for the people who break them… It counts the destruction of the redwood and the loss of our natural wonder in chaotic sprawl… Yet the gross national product does not allow for the health of our children, the quality of their education, or the joy of their play. It does not include the beauty of our poetry or the strength of our marriages, the intelligence of our public debate or the integrity of our public officials… it measures everything, in short, except that which makes life worthwhile.’ Robert Kennedy, Kansas, 18 th March 1968
I was speaking with one of my colleagues by the printer yesterday and told them that I was going to be in Birmingham tomorrow to give this talk as part of a whole day event on ‘Environmental limits to growth’ They asked who is that for? I said the ARO. And he said, how things change. Recounted being asked to speak by one of the regional observatories on the subject of growth some 5 years ago – submitted abstract on the environmental limits. Was told this was not interesting and univited. So, how things change in the space of a year…
