Different Kinds of Sentences
       Simple, Compound, Complex
Simple sentences:
This is Advanced Grammar.
It meets on Tuesday night.
   It meets at six o’clock.
A compound sentence puts
 sentences together using a
 conjunction = coordinating
  conjunction. (FANBOYS =
for, and, nor, but, or, yet, so
Compound sentences:

This is advanced grammar class, and
      it meets Tuesday evening.

Some people have been working all
      day, so they are tired.

 I’m tired, but I’m making money.
A complex sentence combines
      two sentences with a
 subordinator. There are many:
    although, because, even
though, if, when, while, before, a
             fter, until
A complex sentence combines
      two sentences with a
  subordinator = subordinating
  conjunction. There are many:
    although, because, even
though, if, when, while, before, a
             fter, until
Complex sentences:
I was playing soccer when my
       Mom called me.
When my Mom called me, I was
        playing soccer.
Complex sentences:
  Although this is a difficult
 assignment, I have to do it.
I have to do this assignment
    although it is difficult.
Complex sentences:
I lived in China until I came to the
           United States.
(with names of countries, usually
         there is no article)
A subordinator begins an adverb
            clause.
   A complex sentence has an
       adverb clause in it.
     Some people call it the
       subordinate clause.
When I lived in China, I didn’t
know how to speak English.

 I didn’t know how to speak
English when I lived in China.
Complex sentence with a subordinator:
I came to this country so that I could join
                 my family.
 I came to this country because I wanted
            to join my country.

Compound sentence with a conjunction:
I wanted to join my family, so I came to
                the U.S.
He lived in China.
 He lived in Russia.
He lived in Vietnam.
He lived in Mexico.
