The Flying Sikh  Independent India’s first individual sports star, the late great Milkha Singh dominated Indian track and field for over a decade with his speed and spirit, creating multiple records and winning numerous medals in his career.  In 1960, he was persuaded by then Prime Minister Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru to run against Abdul Khaliq in Pakistan, whom he defeated. He then received the title of “the Flying Sikh” by General Ayub. 3 MILKHA SINGH

CHILDHOOD  Born on 20 November 1929 in Gobind Pura village in the Muzaffargarh district of Pakistan.  He was one of 15 siblings.  Studied at a village school in Pakistan upto 5th Std.  During partition he witnessed killings of his family members.  He dreamt big through his difficult situation and it showed his desire and never give up from childhood.  Somehow deep within Milkha knew that he wanted to lead a better and more productive life. 4 MILKHA SINGH

Struggles • Lost his parents in the riots that took place during the partition • Before joining the army he did petty job to survive • After several attempts he was finally able to join Indian Army • He was not able to qualify in his first Olympic which was held at Melbourne • He struggled a lot on field due to his consecutive injuries 5 MILKHA SINGH

SHAH RUKH KHAN Shah Rukh Khan is one of the leading stars of the Indian film Industry who has been ruling the Indian cinematic world for decades often referred to as the romantic icon of Indian cinema. He followed his dream to become an actor and his passion towards his work established him as one of the most renowned actors across the globe. He has been working hard throughout his career and has never given up. He has been through various upheavals in his life like injuries and criticism, but this only added fuel to his enthusiasm. He has many nicknames such as Badshah of Bollywood, king khan, king of Bollywood.

CHILDHOOD  He was born to Meer Taj Mohammed Khan and Lateef Fatima on 2nd November 1965, in New Delhi, the capital city of India.  From childhood, he had a passion for acting.  He also has an elder sister, Shehnaz Lalarukh.  He was raised in Mangalore for the first five years of his life, as his grandfather was a chief engineer at Mangalore port.  SRK lost his father when he was just 15 years old. 10 SHAH RUKH KHAN

  13. 13. STRUGGLES 12 1.Shah Rukh khan, who has seen endless struggles in his life – he has slept on streets, struggled to support himself and his sister at a very young age. He even lost his parents very early which led to his sister seeking mental health support. Amidst all the chaos and challenges, he kept pushing himself, and today he stands tall as the ‘Badshah of Bollywood’. 2.Finally, after many rejections he started his journey from Television Series in 1988, in Dil Dariya, which was his first starring role; but due to production delay, Raj Kapoor Directed 1989 series Fauji became his television debut instead, where he played the Lead Role. 3.Soon after his big screen debut came in the form of Dewaana in 1992.

AWARDS/ACHIEVEMENT  Shahrukh has won the ‘Filmfare’ in the ‘Best Actor’ category several times.  He has been honored with the ‘Best Indian Citizen Award’ in the year 1997.  IIFA has also presented him with the ‘Most Popular Actor’ award and also ‘Star of the Decade’ and ‘Digital Star of the Year awards’.  In 2002 he won the ‘Rajiv Gandhi Award for Excellence’ in the ‘Field of Entertainment’ and also received 'Padma Shri' in the year 2005.  In 2011 ‘UNESCO’ recognized his philanthropic work and awarded him with the ‘Pyramide con Marni’ award.  He was awarded France’s highest civilian award – Knight of the Legion of Honour 13
