Bi.R.Se. Project
A non-invasive RF measurement approach has been developed for non-
contact measuring of both heartbeat and breathing rate, which makes use of
a single wearable antenna close to the body surface.
To validate the methodology, we designed a prototype and perform a
preliminary measurement campaign.
Measurements were taken at different frequencies in the UHF band with
different kind of antennas, during regular breathing activity.

Measurement results
 The tests has been performed at different frequencies in UHF band with
different kinds of antennas (filar, chip, printed) with very similar results
 There no significant differences between different positions of the sensor
around the body

RF front end prototype
Design of an RF front end
The concept is a reflectometer, a circuit capable to detect the phase variation
between incident and reflected signal
Analog output to measure and sample the signal in order to do signal
processing
Data detection
 The data has been collected by a custom designed acquisition board with a
16-bit AD Converter and a serial communication to PC
 The collected signal (namely samples of the phase of the antenna reflection
coefficient recorded in a temporal interval of some tens of seconds) was
analyzed in the frequency domain in order to extract the desired spectral
components.
 The detection algorithm has been developed in Matlab environment defined
correction parameters linked to body motion
 Two detection schemes have been developed with different signal
elaboration techniques for heart rate and breathing rate
 The detection has been performed with a distance between antenna and
body varying from 0 to 2cm
Testing results
The signal of phase variation is sampled in time domain
The resulted signal is processed with Kalman filter in time domain
The data obtained are transformed in frequency domain where is possible to see
the maximum at heart rate
Tests with person stopped and in movement shows that movement affect signal
but is always possible to detect maximum (heart rate)
Product prototype
 Design and mounting of PCB with a shaping fit for a standard enclosure used
inside the company for other applications
 Test performed with a pre-series on company employee
NEXT STEP
 Patent release (already submitted)
 Deep on field testing giving the device to sport fun and sedentary people in
order to verify the accuracy of measurement
 Design of an RFID active tag for safety applications integrating sensor and
capable to interact with a sensor network
 Design of a set of wearable gadgets (es: keyring or collar) integrating sensor
and a Bluetooth Low Energy front end to transmit the measurements to a
smartphone or tablet
 Develop of a demo mobile app to collect and elaborate data detected by
sensor
SmartHeat project
SMART, SECURE AND USER FRIENDLY HEATING MONITORING AND CONTROL FOR
ELDERLY PEOPLE
The aim of the SmartHeat project is to radically change the home heating experience for
health, comfort and wellbeing of elderly people. The goal will be achieved via the
development of a smart, secure and elderly friendly ICT system for home heating
monitoring and control. The system consists of hardware and software components
which monitor and control the temperature in every room independently. The platform
will also be equipped with intelligent algorithms, which learn the user habits and control
the system in an automatic and transparent way, with a Web and smartphone application
in order for the users (including relatives) to remotely interact with the system from
home as well as via the Internet when being outside the home and with wearable
computing devices (e.g. a bracelet or smartwatch) which help optimize the system based
on biometric and other environmental parameters.
