Angela Terry from the Climate Alliance presented at All Energy on the Consumer Insight's Panel. Angela described the crucial reasons whey the industry needs to engage consumers in Climate Action including electric vehicles, solar panels and insulation.

2. A one stop shop consumer website for
sustainability.
One platform where consumers needs are met
and green is positively encouraged.
Enabling Climate Action: Both mitigation
and adaptation.
A cross-industry platform, to mainstream
clean technology.
Together, we can achieve more than
individually.
Collectively, we can reach much bigger
3. How can we involve
consumers effectively
in the design of the
energy system?
4. Consumer
Preferences
• 85% support renewable
energy.
• Three-quarters were very
or fairly concerned
about climate change.
• 72% concerned the UK is
too dependent on energy
from other countries.
Energy and Climate Change Public Attitude Tracker BEIS April 2018
6. Energy Responsible for
Climate Change
• After 25 years of discussing
climate change, global CO2
emissions continue unabated.
• Global energy-related carbon
dioxide emissions increased by
1.4% in 2017
• Current policies are
insufficient to limit global
temperature rise to 2°C, let
alone 1.5°C.
• Industry leadership and co-
operation are crucial.
• Two metres of sea level rise
this century is now entirely
plausible.
• That is enough to flood nearly
every coastal city on Earth.
7. Reality Today in the UK
• Renewable energy 9% of final energy
consumption in 2016.
• Emissions in 2016 increased :
• Transport sector (2%)
• Residential sector (4%)
• Public sector (3%)
• Waste sector (5%)
• LULUCF (4%)
• Heat pumps & low-carbon district heating
< 0.5% of demand.
• Solar installations fell by 90% since
2015
8. The key to success is
co-operation
Real change will not happen on its
own.
If we continue on business as usual,
then we will fail.
It is every one of us working
together that will make this
transition happen.
Communities of Interest and Geography
“This is the planet that we live on,
it's the only one we've got and
we have to protect it!”
9. What could happen if we
build an energy system
without involving
consumers in the
design?
Already Doing It
10. Confusion: Concerns regarding
electric vehicles
High costs.
Truth: EVs work out cheaper than petrol or diesel vehicles.
A perceived lack of charging points
Truth: Twice as many charging points as petrol stations.
Range anxiety
Truth: the average distances is just 9 miles!
Clean cars take too long to charge
Truth: our cars are used for less than 10% of the day.
11. “Inertia is such a strong
force that, without a
decisive push from a
motivated human population,
we won’t make the change in
time to defuse the climate
bomb.”
Bill McKibben The New Yorker 27th April 2018
12. Why is it important
to understand what
consumers want energy
for?
13. Consumer Choice One: Power
Clean Energy Climate Change
Over 900,000 solar PV installations
14. Consumer Choice Two: Transport
Clean Cars Air Pollution
Diesel Car Sales drop 37% in March 2018
15. Consumer Choice Three: Heat
and Cooling
Cosy Home – Domestic Bliss Cold Home - Conflict
1.5 million homes have smart thermostats.
16. Every problem has a solution
• We want consumers to understand
how accessible, affordable and
beneficial clean technologies
are.
People power
• There is an army of consumers
with immense. buying power who
are increasingly seeking cleaner,
greener solutions.
• Women are predominantly the
decision maker in the household.
Make it simple
Make it easy
We only have One Home
17. The problem is global warming.
The solution is switching to
green.
The time for talking is over.
The time for action is now.
We only have One Home.
