Personal Resources Vocabulary Terms
•Personal resources- techniques and skills that we use to express
ourselves emotionally, intellectually, socially, and physically.
1. Imagination- the power to create ideas and pictures in our minds.
2. Concentration- the ability to focus and pay close attention.
3. Observation- the power of seeing and taking notice.
4. Self-awareness- the ability to use your personal resources to
reach your goals and turn your commitment to life long learning
into a bridge to your future success
5. Success- the ability to transform goals into accomplishments
By Angela DeHart, 2017
Developing your
Personal Resources
1. What do you remember most about elementary school?
2. Did you look forward to recess, just as most children do
today?
3. Recess was fun, and it was an important time in your life.
4. You also learned your basic skills, reading, writing, math,
how to tell time, how to get along with others, etc. Those
are the foundation of the skills you will learn in middle
school By Angela DeHart, 2017
Personal Resources
•You probably did not realize it, but you
were enhancing your personal resources
•You were practicing your intellectual and
social skills
By Angela DeHart, 2017
1. While you played, you used imagination, concentration,
observation, sensory awareness, and body movements.
2. These five skills were—and are—extremely valuable to
you in your personal development.
3. They are your personal resources—the techniques and
skills that you use to express yourself emotionally,
intellectually, socially, and physically.
4. They are the skills, when interwoven with the skills
learned in your core courses, that allow you to solve
problems in a unique and creative way
Personal Resources
By Angela DeHart, 2017
Personal Resources
1. Your personal resources are essential to your
success in any endeavor you participate in
2. They will help you develop a better understanding
of yourself and enhance your insight into the world
of science, math, literature, technology, art, math,
and theatre.
3. You cannot reach your maximum potential without
exploring your personal resources and using them
daily.
By Angela DeHart, 2017
Imagination
The power to create ideas
and pictures in our minds
By Angela DeHart, 2017
1. Imagination
• Remember when you played
“pretend” and created scenes as
a child?
• You and your friends were
firemen, soldiers, nurses,
princesses, athletes, warriors
and movie stars.
• You could do anything and be
anyone because you used your
imagination.
• Imagination is the power to
create ideas and pictures in your
mind.
• You made up ideas and stories
in your mind and acted them
out.
• Many dreams are fulfilled and
inventions created through the
use of imagination.
By Angela DeHart, 2017
1. Imagination
• As an student, you must use your imagination to make the goals you have
for your future come true!
• Your imagination is essential in goal setting.
• The process of visualizing, or imagining and seeing pictures in the mind, is
important if your goals are going to have the greatest possible impact on
your life.
By Angela DeHart, 2017
Concentration
The ability to focus and
pay close attention
By Angela DeHart, 2017
2. Concentration
• While you permitted your
imagination to run wild, you
concentrated on making your
dreams come true.
• In other words, you thought
carefully about what was
happening.
• It took this concentration to
make your games work.
• Concentration is the ability to
focus and pay close attention.
By Angela DeHart, 2017
2. Concentration
1. Concentration is an important skill for you to develop
A. With concentration, you become a disciplined person
A. To concentrate, you must pay close attention to your environment
and you must remember what you learn
B. You must also learn to focus in on your thoughts and
feelings.
a. You may have played concentration games in school
b. You had to rely on your memory so that you could match math
cards, vocabulary cards, or picture cards.
By Angela DeHart, 2017
2. Concentration
•You succeeded in those concentration games
when you did not let anything else interfere
with your goal of concentrating
•You remembered what was happening, and you
did not let anyone break your concentration
•You must maintain the same type of focus
when you are working towards your life goals
•Do not let anything or anyone block your
concentration By Angela DeHart, 2017
Observation
The power of seeing and
taking notice
By Angela DeHart, 2017
3. Observation
1. Observation is the power to see things that someone is showing
you that they can no longer see because they do them so often
they take them for granted
2. You can watch people closely and carefully to learn to imitate their
life skills. This is one of the powers of having a mentor or teacher –
they agree to show you their success skills. They model the skills
you will need to accomplish goals that you have for your life
3. Observation is the power of seeing and taking notice of the
environment.
By Angela DeHart, 2017
3. Observation
1. If you do not pay close attention to people’s
movements, mannerisms, and dress, your
own adaption of these skills will be without
substance
2. The skill of observation requires much
attention and study
3. When you observe people or things, you must
look carefully at the details.
By Angela DeHart, 2017
3. Observation
1. The way we think, feel, or act about a person, place, or
situation is called our point of view
2. A point of view can be literal, such as the way you see
actual objects fitting together in a given space
3. It can also be figurative, involving interpretation, which
results from your attitude toward what you see
4. Your point of view will have an impact on your
observation, so try and get into the habit of looking at
things and people from several different points of view
to get as much detail as possible
By Angela DeHart, 2017
Self-awareness
The ability to use your
personal resources to
reach your goals and turn
your commitment to life
long learning into a bridge
to your future success
By Angela DeHart, 2017
4. Self-awareness
1. When you are truly aware of your senses, you absorb every detail of an
item or experience and attempt to make associations with other items
and experiences
2. Colors, textures, and patterns are important in these experiences
3. Your senses must be so keen that you can recall every detail
By Angela DeHart, 2017
Success
The ability to transform
goals into
accomplishments
By Angela DeHart, 2017
Personal Resources
When you put all these resources together in your
childhood experience, you had fun, started your
journey of being a life long learner, and created
lifelong memories.
As you explore these resources, you will understand
why they provide a foundation for your life
experiences
By Angela DeHart, 2017
Personal Resources
1. Personal resources are like a door
2. They must be opened before you can walk through and realize
their full potential
3. Everyone possesses personal resources
4. They are inside of us, even if we seldom use them
5. You may not think of yourself as imaginative, creative, successful,
or resourceful if you have not had the opportunity to exercise and
develop your personal resources
6. Education offers the opportunity you have been needing to
become aware of your personal resources and to expand them
By Angela DeHart, 2017
