2. POWER & GOVERNANCE OF THE INTERNET
- SURVEILLANCE & PRIVACY
There is a need for Police and other law enforcement agencies to
monitor criminal behaviour and actions.
In Australia, this is a hot topic for debate because there is more
than one angle to the surveillance of its citizens and other people.
People in Australia have a right to go about their daily lives without
being monitored by government authorities.
3. POWER & GOVERNANCE OF THE INTERNET
- SURVEILLANCE & PRIVACY
That is, if they have historically complied with societal
expectations related to law here.
Another side to the story is that people with ulterior motives are
also monitoring online activity to ascertain different
demographic characteristics of people including age, religion,
occupation, marital status and cultural background.
4. POWER & GOVERNANCE OF THE INTERNET
- SURVEILLANCE & PRIVACY
We can reduce our chances of becoming a victim of scams if
we are vigilant about our online activities and digital footprint.
It is much better to keep passwords to yourself.
Do not use password remembering software because it is
another form of exterior software which contains vital personal
information.
5. POWER & GOVERNANCE OF THE INTERNET
- SURVEILLANCE & PRIVACY
Do not divulge your banking (PIN) personal identification
number to anyone at all.
Remember not to buy products from people selling over the
phone.
Door to door sales is also a bit outdated โ so be aware to not
even open your front door to someone claiming to be selling
something or even for charity.
6. POWER & GOVERNANCE OF THE INTERNET
- SURVEILLANCE & PRIVACY
Do not necessarily believe what someone is telling you over
the phone.
For example,
๏ง A caller asking whether you, or someone in your family has
had a car accident - or any accident/illness for that matter.
๏ง A caller asking you about your mortgage.
7. POWER & GOVERNANCE OF THE INTERNET
- SURVEILLANCE & PRIVACY
๏ง A caller saying that your computer (or anything to do with
your phone as well) has malfunctioned and that they need to
help you fix it somehow.
๏ง Do not necessarily believe what someone is telling you over
the Internet via email, or from a web site either.
8. POWER & GOVERNANCE OF THE INTERNET
- SURVEILLANCE & PRIVACY
For example, email scammers include:
๏ง A purported โClairvoyantโ (a real one doesnโt charge a fee).
๏ง Any claim that you have won a prize or earned a substantial
amount of money that is in an account waiting for your
withdrawal.
๏ง Gift cards from supermarket chains should be treated warily also.
9. POWER & GOVERNANCE OF THE INTERNET
- SURVEILLANCE & PRIVACY
๏ง Surveys claiming that you have won, or could win a valuable prize.
๏ง Avoid surveys that claim to pay money or credit upon completion or
where a valuable prize is promised.
๏ง Any email in a foreign language should be dropped into the trash
and deleted.
๏ง An unexpected offer of high-paid employment.
10. POWER & GOVERNANCE OF THE INTERNET
- SURVEILLANCE & PRIVACY
UNSUBSCRIBE if in any doubt. The button is meant to be at
the foot of the email message.
Bear in mind though that this will verify your email address to
the sender as well.
If it becomes unbearable, change your email address.
Change your bank card if you believe that you are being
scammed.
11. POWER & GOVERNANCE OF THE INTERNET
- SURVEILLANCE & PRIVACY
Basically then, any message requesting bank card details for
payment of a good and/or service needs to be scrutinised by a
trusted friend or family member; if it seems out of the ordinary
& a bit too good to be true, donโt believe any of it.
Unless you requested it, donโt buy into it.
12. POWER & GOVERNANCE OF THE INTERNET
- SURVEILLANCE & PRIVACY
An email should always have the name of the sender at the top
of it.
Financial scams generally do not display it there.
Money is extremely difficult to recover here in Australia and
especially if it goes offshore.
13. POWER & GOVERNANCE OF THE INTERNET
- SURVEILLANCE & PRIVACY
The motivation for a scammer to initiate and continue
siphoning money from your bank account can be measured in
economic terms.
That is, supply (other peoples money) and demand - their
remote & face-less interaction with victims that generates
ongoing and free (i.e. not taxed) revenue.
14. POWER & GOVERNANCE OF THE INTERNET
- SURVEILLANCE & PRIVACY
The trouble caused is devastating and even
life-threatening.
BE AWARE!!
