An (Updated) Introduction to Gutenberg, WordPress's new editor. Presented by Andrew Marks at the Brisbane Northside WordPress Meetup on 19th September 2018.
4. What is the Gutenberg WordPress Editor?
A new page builder that is being designed to integrate
with WordPress core
• It will add content blocks and page builder-like functionality
• It will replace TinyMCE as the default content editor
• It is slated to be released with WordPress 5.0
• There is going to be a 4.9.9 before that
8. Block Repository
• Potentially going to be a repository of blocks like there
are themes and plugins
• Someone is already making a library:
https://editorblockswp.com/library/
• There are about 50 there already!
9. Gutenberg is Currently a Plugin
• You can add Gutenberg to any WordPress site today as
a plugin downloaded from the WordPress plugin
directory.
• The Gutenberg plugin is being updated very regularly
as new features are included.
• As noted in the plugin description… this is beta
software. Use with care.
• 1000 open issues, 3 releases in 5 hours!
10. Classic Editor is also a plugin
• When WP5.0 comes out, the Classic Editor
will be removed.
• You can pre-emptively install it now
• In the first week since WP4.9.8, 700%
increase (60,000) downloads
11. Meet ClassicPress
• Version 1 of ClassicPress will be a Gutenberg
free experience of WordPress, compatible
with your existing site
• Version 2 will be community led – features
will be brought up and voted for by the
community.
12. Some of the Good with Gutenberg
• It’s a move forward for the WordPress visual editor.
• Using HTML comments to store block info is clever.
• Disabling Gutenberg won’t break your site.
• The copy and paste routine is well executed.
• Solid HTML 5 output
• You can write your own blocks.
13. Some of the Bad with Gutenberg
• If you use a 3rd-party visual editor, it will break your
site!
• No more composing in the browser.
• The UI is a bit clunky.
• No shortcodes in paragraphs.
• No images or other embeds in paragraphs.
• Significant accessibility issues (at least currently)
• Older themes don’t style HTML 5 output.
14. What’s Unresolved with Gutenberg?
A Lot.
• The relationship between the Gutenberg editor
and themes.
• How will it be integrated into the WordPress
core?
• When will the Gutenberg WordPress Editor be
released?
15. What Should You Be Doing about Gutenberg?
• Give it a try
• Submit feedback
• Don’t panic (yet)
• gutenfree.com (Classic Editor plugin)
• Disable Gutenberg plugin – seems like the best
solution
