ThinkOut Consulting are founded by Andre Andersen. My mission with what I do is helping
individuals and organisations reach their full potential, through the strong passion and belief that
“it’s all about people”
In 2016 I ran a research and survey on the topic “what is motivation to you” In my research I have
interview a little over 100 people and the survey have been answered by almost 300 people:
Let me now share some of the finding with you:
A very open question with room for all kind of interpretations. When I asked people, who answered
“strongly agree” or “agree” what that questions meant to them, it can roughly be summarised in two
thinks – purpose and fulfilment. And this in relation to private life and work.
I will focus a little on the 34% who answered “sometimes”.
I my research and coaching I’ve heard many people describe a of numbness. People explains it like
you don’t really feel true joy about much. It’s not like you are really unhappy, there is just this empty
space inside. You might like you job, love your kinds or family, But there is still a numbness, an
empty space. That numbness or empty space feels bad and can turn into pain, sadness, desperation.
Actually, this can lead to a much worse situation: stress, burnout and depression.
One of the reasons I found for this numbness is what I call “the unfulfilling hunt for success”
Let me explain by using a very familiar model:
We recognize this as “Marlow’s pyramid of needs”
the “unfulfilling hunt for success” is when we live an unbalanced life, where we focus to much on the
pure success and forget to enjoy the journey we are on.
What happens if you remove one of the element or one of the elements of the pyramid are weak? It
will collapse (we get a feeling of emptiness)! In almost all cases I have seen the element of belonging
and love, plus the esteem element are suffering and under pressure. It means we are missing some
of the very basic human psychological motivators in our hunt for success.
There is another reason for the feeling of “unfulfilling hunt for success” That is when do something
you truly do not enjoy, that you are not committed to, that is not in line with your core definition of
who you are, what you want to feel.
In your organisation, you will recognize both types either they will show signs of stress and burnout,
and maybe emotional outburst. Or you will see the people that are just not showing any kind of
improvement no matter what you through at them.
As business leader, you can make a difference here, you can have an impact.
First help them understand the “WHY” As humans its essential we have a feel of purpose, which
means: how does what I do fit in the bigger picture, and what impact am I having?
No matter what generation you belong to this it key! Acknowledging that each generation are driven
by different needs and motivators, one fact remains: If you strip all outer factors and noise, we are
all driven by the same core values for purpose, fulfilment, freedom, happiness, health to mention
the top 5 I have seen through 1000’s of coaching sessions.
Good to see in Q2 that 74% “strongly agree”/”Agree” with that they bring their own motivation with
them and not relying on work to fulfil the need.
In Q3 – 61% answer that “sometimes” or “rarely” their job is their main source of motivation. This is
not good news for us as human beings, considering how many hours we spend working.
 Do we simple exchange time for money?
 Does that mean we spend a huge part of our life on something that gives us no fulfilment?
 Why do we accept such backbreaking circumstances?
 If you are one of the 61% ask yourself, how come I do not think higher off myself than this?
 Do I not deserve a life full of passion, purpose and fulfilment?
To understand this better, let’s look at the academic interpretation of motivation. Motivation is a
theoretical term used to explain behaviour. It gives the reasons for people's actions, desires, and
needs. Motivation can also be defined as one's direction to behaviour, or what causes a person to
want to repeat a behaviour and vice versa. A motive is what prompts the person to act in a certain
way, or at least develop an inclination for specific behaviour.
Motivation can be divided into two different theories known as intrinsic (internal or inherent)
motivation and extrinsic (external) motivation.
If your motivation is an inner source or an external resource depends on a lot of things. But
interesting enough are people who pull their motivation for an inner source more conscious about it
and their motivation last longer. In general but not limited to, the inner source of motivation come
from:
 My sense-of-self or identity
How I see myself, what I think of myself, how I feel about myself.
 My values
Things that are most important to me...these are usually just beneath the surface of
our awareness if we have never taken the time to sort them out, but they are very
powerful motivators of our choices and our behaviors.
 My strongly held beliefs
Right or wrong, good or bad, helpful or limiting, these are the beliefs we hold about
ourselves, other people, life, and the world in general. They are keys to how thought
creates reality.
 My memories and experiences
Every significant emotional event, pleasant or unpleasant is stored on the hard-drive
of our subconscious mind.
The extremal source of motivation are more short them and therefore also, in general have short
term impact. Examples are: money, fame, praise, recognition, promotions, job titles.
Unbalance will occur when the external motivators we seek are not in tune with our basic internal
motivators
Apparently, many employees don’t feel their manager or leader are particular good at motivating
them.
Some of the thing I’ve heard are:
 my manager is stress out and don’t have time to care.
 He/she is always in meetings
 He/she always tells me what to do, without telling me why or making me understand the
reason
 He/she always looks worried and unapproachable
As a manager or an organisation, the obvious, and most common motivator are from the external
source mention above (money, fame, praise, recognition, promotions, job titles)
As I said on page 3 - Help them understand the “WHY” As humans its essential we have a feel of
purpose, which means: how does what I do fit in the bigger picture, and what impact am I having?
This is how we feel when we are motivated. It’s all something that will show in our physical
behaviour and out physiological attitude – others will feel it and see it!
Below are a few words that people added to explain how motivation feels:
• Success
• Satisfaction
• fearless
• Powerful
• Inspiration
• Creative
• Pride
If there are one think you should take away from this report, it this: The significant impact of
motivated people! 93% believes that being motivated makes you capable of achieving extra ordinary
goals. No matter what your dreams, goals or ambitions are you can’t get there without a strong
motivation.
This question raised a flood of diverse feedback. But in general, most seems to agree that motivation
is not down to personality, but the answer depends a lot on the state the person are in when
replying to it. The more demotivated you are, the more you belief are that it depends on personality
and visa-versus.
Working with people as a key passion for most of my life, have
just ignited my passion even more.
For me, it has always been about people. “Human behaviour”
has always been my key interests and I have always been
fascinated with what really makes us tick, underneath the thick
layers of assumptions, inner self-talk and other self-inflicted
filters between thoughts and action.
I, can truly feel my soul move, with every word of Victor Frankl:
"Everything can be taken from a man but one thing: the last of
the human freedoms—to choose one’s attitude in any given set
of circumstances, to choose one’s own way."
This is my mantra and my mission are to help individuals and organisations to truly embrace the
truth that we all, not matter circumstances, have the strength, capability and ability to feel the
strong force of motivation that runs deep inside your body and in the remote corners of your mind.
Dig it out and let it motivate you into action. Why? Because I truly know it can change your life
permanent, reaching your dreams, living a life in balance with your core values.
Through expansive and thousands of coaching sessions and motivational speeches/pep talks
spanning over the last 11 years, I've been blessed with an insight of what really matters to people.
With an inspirational application of my own motivation for what I do, in combination with
professional tools like coaching, mentoring and other proven methodologies, I promise to ignite you!
