It is in the Caribbean sea.
Jamaica is an island country situated in the Caribbean
Sea.
The island, 10,990 square kilometres (4,240 sq mi) in
area, lies about 145 kilometres (90 mi) south of Cuba,
and 191 kilometres (119 mi) west of Hispaniola.

Origins and history:
The first inhabitants of Jamaica were a race of skillful hunters,
fishermen and farmers. They were called"The Taino Indians."
In 1494, Christopher Columbus arrived and claimed the island for
Spain.
Jamaica became a British Colony in 1655 when the English
captured it from the Spaniards. The English imported many
Africans slaves to work on the sugar plantations. Jamaica remained
a British Colony until 1962 when it became independent.

Kingston:Kingston is the capital and largest city of
Jamaica, located on the southeastern coast of the
island. It faces a natural harbour protected by the
Palisadoes, a long sand spit which connects the town
of Port Royal and the Norman Manley International
Airport to the rest of the island. In the Americas,
Kingston is the largest predominantly English-speaking
city south of the United States.

Montego Bay:Montego Bay is the capital of the parish
of St. James and the second largest city in Jamaica by
area and the fourth by population (after Kingston,
Spanish Town and Portmore).
It is a tourist destination with duty free shopping, a
cruise line terminal and several beaches. The city is
backed by picturesque low mountains.

Traditions:
Jamaica has developed a unique type of religion. The
most popular is called Pocomania, which is a blend
between European Christianity and African religious
practices. The second is called Rastafarianism.
Reggae and its derivatives such as dance hall and rock
steady were key for the development of Jamaican
culture.

Traditional food:
Jamaican cuisine includes a mixture of cooking techniques,
flavors, spices and influences from the indigenous people on
the island of Jamaica, and the Spanish, British, Africans, Indian
and Chinese who have inhabited the island.
Jamaican cuisine includes various dishes from the different
cultures brought to the island with the arrival of people from
elsewhere.
In addition to ingredients that are native to Jamaica, many
foods have been introduced and are now grown locally. A
wide variety of seafood, tropical fruits and meats are
available.

Sport:The most popular sports are those imported
from Britain. The most popular sport is cricket; other
popular sports include association football, athletics,
and netball. Other sports such as rugby league and
rugby union are considered growing sports.
