communication must occur through the Blackboard course environment. Other communication can be managed
through Office Hours visits or by telephone (see page 1). The “Subject” line of all email communication must
begin with the student’s BUAD 3000 section number, followed by the nature of the message. Messages that

3
4. • open the BUAD 3000 homepage daily in the event announcements are posted in the Discussion Board Folder or
on the homepage—students are accountable for all information posted!
• attend all classes—in the event a student must miss class, the instructor must be notified as soon as possible, as
she retains the right to grant excused absences (students may generally attend another section, addressing the
same content, to make up for the missed class)
• arrive on time for all class sessions and take care not to create disturbances if they are late
• sign their own name to the Sign-in Sheet to ensure credit for attendance (this includes students attending a
section other than their own for make-up purposes)
• demonstrate respect to the instructor and their classmates by refraining from social discussions in class
• silence cell phones and discontinue use of any other means of technology during class—the only acceptable use
of technology would be a laptop (which is strongly encouraged—see page 11 for details on wireless connectivity)
• come to class having read the assigned readings
• participate actively in classroom dialog and activities
• complete and turn in all assignments on the specified due date in the specified format
• submit all assignments using Microsoft Word; no handwritten assignments are accepted unless otherwise noted
• accept responsibility for obtaining missed notes or assignments, and subsequently, completing all assignments—
ask your peers or the instructor for assistance
• engage in peer dialog and review of assignments in- and out-of-class as required
• adhere to the College of Business Administration’s Code of Academic Conduct
As a student taking coursework in the College, you have an obligation to maintain the highest ethical conduct.
This involves avoiding acts of academic dishonesty. The reason for requiring the highest standards of ethical
conduct is to ensure fairness, honesty and integrity in the evaluation of student performance. Evaluation of
student performance should not be invalidated by students intending or attempting to misrepresent the skill,
achievement or ability of either themselves or others.
To achieve this purpose, the College has enacted a Code of Student Academic Conduct. This Code sets forth
specific types of academic misconduct which will not be tolerated. If there is any evidence of any of these types
of academic misconduct in this course, charges will be filed against the student or students involved. Along with
the Code, the College has also enacted a Student Academic Grievance Procedure. The purpose of this grievance
procedure is to provide the exclusive method by which a student can file a grievance if s/he believes that the
charge of academic misconduct is false or to grieve a final course grade which s/he believes has been unfairly or
erroneously assigned.
The Code of Student Academic Conduct, the Student Academic Grievance Procedure, and the Student Grievance
Form can be reviewed on the College of Business Administration website.
Note on another expectation: students engaged in the on-campus interviewing/recruiting and subsequent placement
processes, are also expected to practice honesty, integrity and ethical behavior. Misrepresentation of academic
performance, records, and positions held or duties performed will be addressed by the College of Business
Administration with severe penalties imposed upon the student. The College reserves the right to enforce sanctions
consistent with the severity of the infraction.
The Instructor will:
• arrive for class on time, prepared to share her knowledge in ways that accommodate the needs of the students
(Note: in the event class must be cancelled due to an emergency, every effort will be made to notify students in
advance of the class meeting)
4
5. • honor her office hours and meet with students individually as necessary
• apply fair and consistent grading for all student assignments, returning them in a timely fashion
• help identify resources needed to complete assignments or career-related endeavors
• do whatever she can to make sure this is a successful experience for all participants
• amend, adjust or deviate from the syllabus as necessary.
COURSE/ASSIGNMENT REQUIREMENTS
• Assignments are due according to the course schedule, (although, the instructor will accept early assignments if
desired). All assignment requirements will be posted in the Assignments/Activities Folder on the BUAD 3000
homepage as soon as directions are finalized. If you are experiencing difficulty with any aspect of Blackboard,
troubleshooting tips can be found on the Blackboard Help Desk
(http://www.utoledo.edu/dl/helpdesk/hlp_index.html) page; if you need further assistance, call 419.530.8835
(866.UToledo, toll free) or email utdl@utoledo.edu. The instructor can respond to assignment content
questions, not technical questions regarding Blackboard access.
• Late work is not accepted. In the event a student believes an assignment will not be completed on time,
communication must occur with the instructor prior to the due date. If the instructor deems the student’s
rationale for late work reasonable and acceptable, the assignment may be submitted by the time designated by
the instructor to the appropriate location (depending on the assignment requirements). Locations may include:
• the location determined by the instructor in the BUAD 3000 course environment in Blackboard
• the Optimal Resume Review Center
• the instructor’s mailbox in the Management Department Office, ST 2007
• Students will work individually and in groups or Career Clusters to achieve the desired objectives and to
complete assignments. Participants will engage in active classroom and out-of-classroom experiences to
complete assignments.
• In the event a completed hard copy assignment is requested and is more than one page, all pages must be
stapled together prior to submitting to the instructor. Single sheets, paper clipped, or corner-folded assignments
will not be accepted.
• Students may secure a binder to use as their Career Development Portfolio, if they do not have their BUAD 2000
Portfolio (a tool used prior to Fall 2008). All assignments, activities and research may be included in this
portfolio. You may choose to use this binder as the foundation for a portfolio to be used in your internship/job
search. A portfolio is an item that may be used to set you apart from your competition. You may want to
consider purchasing, (or adding to your “wish list”), a portfolio now for your internship/job search. Note:
students who have had Career Development I should use the same portfolio.
• Unless otherwise noted, all work will be submitted using Microsoft Word, following the specifications noted on
the assignment requirements.
CAREER CLUSTERS
Students may be assigned career clusters based on tentative career direction. These groups are designed to facilitate in-
and out-of-class conversation among peers about career related issues, and to share resources and ideas for researching
career information. Students may also engage in peer review of writing in their career clusters.
ASSIGNMENT DESCRIPTIONS (Specifications and completion requirements to be posted in the Assignments/Activities Folder in
Blackboard per the course schedule)
Full descriptions of all assignment requirements will be available to students in the BUAD 3000 Assignments/Activities folder,
Blackboard. (Any login or access issues must be addressed through The University of Toledo Distance and eLearning Help
Desk page. If you need further assistance, call 419.530.8835 (866.UToledo, toll free) or email utdl@utoledo.edu.
BUAD 3000 Course Contract Acceptance (Due in Blackboard Survey Folder by 5 p.m., 1/23)
5
6. To ensure students understand the syllabus and course expectations, acceptance of a contract is required to make certain all
class participants are accountable for the expectations outlined in the syllabus, discussed in class, and reiterated in the
contract (Survey Folder).
Data Sheet Survey 1 and 2-5 points each (Due in Blackboard Survey Folder by 5 p.m., 1/23and 3/6 respectively)
Students are asked to assess their perceived preparedness to engage in the job search. Quality points are not awarded
for this task—when completed, students receive the full 5 points per survey. Completion of Data Sheet Surveys 1 and 2
help College faculty determine if they are making progress on the desired competencies necessary for graduation. See
pages 7-8 of the syllabus.
Company Profile-100 points (Due in Blackboard Assignment Drop Box by 5 p.m. designated dates)
1. Company/Organization and Industry and 5 p.m., 1/30/09 Combined in one document

Qualifications
4. Cover Letter Composition 5 p.m., 2/20/09 Single document
5. Interview Preparation 5 p.m., 2/20/09 Single document
The Company Profile is a project that students will complete as they progress through BUAD 3000. Its design
encourages thoughtful research and consideration for job seekers while targeting employers, developing effective
resumes and correspondence and preparing for interviews. Full credit will be awarded to students who complete
thoughtfully the required sections for the assigned class meetings.
Personal Pitch-15 points (Performed in class week of 2/9/09; Due in Blackboard Assignment Drop Box by 5 p.m. 2/13)
Students must become skilled at introducing themselves to develop their job search and professional network. This
assignment will encourage creation and refinement of their unique “pitch” as they become comfortable with their
professional presence.
Resume-30 points (Due in Optimal Resume Review Center by 5 p.m. 2/13)
This summary of your skills and qualifications for employment is a living document that will change continually. We will
spend time in- and out-of-class working on this all important job search tool. Optimal Resume must be used to create
this document to receive credit. Additionally, no resume will be critiqued for grading unless a rough draft has been
reviewed. To access Optimal Resume, visit the Business Career Programs website,
http://www.utoledo.edu/business/BCP/index.html, select “Students,” then click on “Resume Development” (Optimal
Resume).
Mock Interview-50 points (Mock Interview Evaluation Due in Blackboard Survey Folder by 5 p.m. 2/27;
Mock Interview Reflection Due in Blackboard Assignment Drop Box by 5 p.m. 2/27)
The Mock Interview is the “capstone” project for the class. Students will participate in a practice interview with a
professional in the field they wish to pursue. The employers will offer written and oral feedback so students may
enhance their professional presence for future interviews. Upon completion of the interview students will enter
evaluative scores in the in the Mock Interview Evaluation in the Survey Folder and then, submit a brief reflection in the
Assignment Drop Box.
ATTENDANCE-40 POINTS
This class will be highly interactive. Therefore, all participants will need to come prepared to discuss topics and their
individual career development. We will all learn through the experiences of one another; thus, extensive participation is
expected. Peer review will be employed to share feedback and encourage accountability among classmates. Absences
will be considered unexcused unless discussed with the instructor prior to class. The instructor will adhere to The
University of Toledo missed class policy—text available on the University website
http://www.utoledo.edu/facsenate/missed_class_policy.html
6
7. PROFESSIONALISM POINTS—AT THE INSTRUCTOR’S DISCRETION
While it is the instructor’s responsibility to attempt to increase your knowledge and provide you with strategies for
enhancing your career success, it is your responsibility to practice professionalism in this class. Consider this a training
ground for your future. Attend class, arrive on time, participate, demonstrate conscientiousness, respect, and a solid
work ethic, and submit written documents that are free of typographical and mechanical errors. Professionalism does
not begin when you graduate and accept a full time position. The impressions you create now will follow you
throughout your experience at The University of Toledo, in the College of Business Administration and in other student
or professional circles. Discretionary bonus points may be added due to exceptional performance and commitment to
professionalism.

online career assessments visit the Explore Careers tab,
http://careeronestop.org/ExploreCareers/SelfAssessments/FindAssessments.aspx, on CareerOneStop.org

Students are encouraged to use VAULT, our new online career resource library to explore careers, industries and
companies. The information is vast, written in a casual tone, and traditionally very highly utilized by students
nationwide whose career centers purchase this resource. To access VAULT visit the Business Career Programs website,

Assignments will be available in the Assignments/Activities Folder, BUAD 3000 Homepage in Blackboard, although some may be available in class. You are
responsible for following the progress and structure of the Course Schedule. Due assignments are preceded by a bold “Due” and are listed under Action Items
(the far right column). Readings for future weeks will also be listed under Action Items. Topics, unless amended, are discussed on the meeting date.
Note: Pay attention to due dates/times. Most assignments are electronic submissions in Blackboard or the Optimal Resume Review Center. All assignments are
time-stamped. Because assignments are due by 5 p.m., that means all documents should be submitted well in advance of 5 p.m. on the due date. Submissions
that are attempted after 5 p.m. cannot be loaded.
Supplemental readings for topics may be found in the Resources Folder on the homepage. Assigned readings and in-class discussion are the foundation;
however, many valuable readings may be included in the Resources Folder which will complement your knowledge and skills.
