P A S T ?
MEANING:
• The simple past is a past
form. We usually use it to
describe an action, event,
or state that was
completed in the past.
SIMPLE PAST
• We use the simple past to talk
about something that is
distant from us in some way.
For example, the simple past
may signal that :
• An action, event or state was
completed at definite time in
the past.
Example: The modern Olympics
started in 1896 and became an
international evento in 1924.
SIMPLE PAST
• The speaker wants to show social or psychological distance.
For example:
Did you still want to read my novel?
I just wanted to say something.
SIMPLE PAST
• We often use a time
expression in a sentence
with the simple past.
• Example: In 2002, we moved
to New York. We lived there
for two years, and then we
moved to India.
SIMPLE PAST NEGATIVE
Use the simple past to talk about
completed actions in the past:
Negative form the simple past
negative with didn’t (did not) +
verb.
Examples: I/You/He/She/We/They
didn’t feel well.
We didn’t have a great time on
vacation.
