31. What is Resilience?

Resilience:
The capacity to bounce back following adverse events, adapt and succeed.
Like many life skills, resilience skills can be learned.
What habits are common in resilient individuals?

Positivity
Social
Skills
32. Impact of Non-Resilient employees
The Problem:
• 69% of employees report work is a significant source of stress and 41% of
workers report they typically feel tensed or stressed out during the workday. 1
• Health care expenditures of workers who report high levels of stress are 46%
greater than workers with low levels of stress (Average $1,700/year).
• The median number of days lost due to anxiety, stress and related disorders is
25 days versus a median of 6 for all other nonfatal injury and illness cases.
The current solution?
•Wellness solutions for physical health are abundant – but what about brain health?
•Employer Assistance Programs are underutilized and remain stigmatized.
•Do not promote brain health and peak performance.

Certain known things make people happy- money, health, relationships– however it is amazing how little any one of them matters
Empathy: An important component of EI is empathy; having the ability to step into another person’s shoes by acknowledging and understanding their perspective is crucial to fostering and maintaining productive and effective work relationships.7Decision Making: While decision making seems to be entirely rational, it is also highly emotional. Meditation seems to improve decision making by minimizing or removing emotional components that may cloud clearer thinking.8Self-Awareness: In a 2011 study, mindfulness meditation was shown to increase the part of the brain associated with self awareness.9Positive Emotions: Being in a good mood helps people take in information effectively and respond nimbly and creatively. After an eight-week MBSR program, study participants showed greater activation in their left prefrontal cortex, which is associated with positive emotions and a more adaptive response to negative or stressful events.10
Health care is personal and too important to stay the same. It’s more than doctors, medications, waiting rooms, and insurance companies. It’s about the people impacted: Your spouse, a neighbor, coworker, or friend. Helping you provide the best care for each person is our passion. You are the experts at providing care and helping your patients be well. Our role is to help you thrive in today’s challenging health care landscape.
