• Ever since the happening of the earth summit at Rio De Janeiro, Brazil the
term “BIODIVERSITY” has become a buzzword. In fact it is the
contracted form of Biological Diversity .
• The term 'biodiversity' encompasses the variety of all life on earth. It is
identified as the variability among living organisms and the ecological
complexes of which they are part, including diversity within and between
species and ecosystems.
• Quite simply it can be defined as
“Variety, Variability, between
genes, species and ecosystems”

Punjab is one of the smaller
states of India with an area
of 50362 sq. km. The state
which was once named
‘Punjab’ after its five rivers
(‘Punj’ meaning five and ‘Ab’
meaning water) now has
only two major rivers (Sutlej
& Beas) flowing through it
and one major river (Ravi)
touching its northern
border.

Methods
• Assess the existing status of biodiversity in Phagwara.
• Explored Chiheru, there fields & captured some of the pictures/videos for evidence and explored local flora
and fauna.
• Identify causes of its deterioration of local biodversity which is agriculture and LPU
• Promoted conservation and sustainable use of the state’s biological resources.
• Create mechanisms required to plan for natural resource management and
• Long term conservation,
• Promote cooperation between all stakeholders including panchayat, public
• institutions, social group and the masses,
• Incorporate principles of restoration, conservation & sustainable use of
• Biodiversity.
• Stimulate education & research in the area,
• Identify financial instruments to achieve these objectives.
