Using CARIS Onboard
CARIS Onboard supports the same range
of sonars and acquisition formats as
CARIS HIPS™ and SIPS™. Large volumes
of data are automatically imported and
the trusted HIPS and SIPS algorithms
are applied. CARIS Onboard generates a
HIPS project and can be easily configured
to output other products, such as DEMs
and image mosaics. All of which are kept
up to date as new data is processed.
By the time the survey platform has
completed its mission a fully geo-
referenced DEM and mosaic, along with a
HIPS project, are available for final quality
control and use in survey deliverables.
System Overview
The CARIS Onboard software has three
main components:
Process Designer provides a graphical
interface to design and configure data
processing workflows. It allows users
to add, customize and save a variety
of processing tasks. This includes
data import, tide and sound velocity
corrections, creation of output data
products and automated data cleaning
(e.g. using CUBE). Standard processing
workflow templates are also provided.
Onboard Service is an automated service
that monitors for raw data files from an
acquisition system and batch processes
the acquired survey data. As new data
is detected it is automatically processed
using the workflows defined through
the Process Designer. The output data
products (e.g. HIPS project, DEMs and
mosaics) are also registered for remote
access. Products and quality information
generated by the Onboard Service are
streamed to the dedicated Control Centre
or to desktop applications, such as HIPS
and SIPS. This enables the hydrographer
to view the geo-referenced survey in near
real-time for quality control and decision
support while the survey is underway.
Control Centre provides a single access
point for users to configure, manage
and monitor the Onboard Service.
Status information about the processing
is displayed alongside a map window
showing survey coverage and data
quality. The Control Centre can be used
on a vessel or accessed remotely from an
office location, via an internet connection.
Built on decades of hydrographic data processing expertise and supported by the highly scalable CSAR
framework, CARIS Onboard™ enables users to process data from a range of sensors in near real-time to
minimize data conversion and processing times. Designed with autonomous operations in mind, CARIS
Onboard can also save valuable time and resources when used on survey vessels and launches.

Deployment Options
CARIS Onboard can be
installed on a desktop
computer, laptop or directly
on to the computer payload
of your autonomous vehicle.
It is certified on Windows 7
and will soon be available
for Linux operating systems.
Hardware versions are also
available as a rack mount for
dedicated vessel operations
or as a water tight canister
for subsea vehicle use. The
computer specifications for
the hardware versions of
CARIS Onboard have been
designed with tomorrow’s
survey sensors in mind to
provide the processing speed
and disk space needed.
OEM agreements can be
arranged for sensor or vehicle
manufacturers on request.
System Benefits
CARIS Onboard automates
many of the standard pro-
cessing steps required in a
modern sonar survey that
not only reduce subjectivity,
but allow human resources
to work on specialized tasks.
It is especially optimal for
autonomous operations where
traditionally data can only
be processed after vehicle
recovery, which causes a data
processing bottleneck. When
used with survey launches or
unmanned surface vehicles
it becomes a force multiplier
allowing surveys to be con-
ducted more efficiently. With
the ever expanding volume of
data being collected at higher
resolutions CARIS Onboard
can significantly reduce your
Ping-to-Chart™ timeline.
Ping-to-Chart
CARIS Onboard fits seamlessly
into the existing Ping-to-Chart
suite of software, providing
near real-time seafloor map-
ping and dramatically reduc-
ing the overall project time.
Integrating with both autono-
mous and traditional survey
platforms, CARIS Onboard pro-
vides an operational advantage
and allows your highly skilled
workforce to concentrate on
getting the best results.

Manage complex marine spatial information, eliminate data redundancy, improve productivity and extend the
use of your data holdings with CARIS’ flagship enterprise GIS solution. Hydrographic Production Database™
(HPD) addresses the data management and cartographic production requirements of the world’s largest and
most advanced hydrographic agencies.
Efficiency is maximized in HPD™ with features being stored only once; this coupled with the ability to
associate multiple cartographic representations for different product types has positioned HPD as the
number one solution.
System Architecture
HPD is comprised of client and server
software. The HPD Server™ stores
source information and derived products
in a seamless database. This allows
for multiple product types to be easily
created from the common source.
Changes between the source data
and products are efficiently tracked
and updates can be easily applied.
The HPD clients facilitate the loading,
compilation and verification of the
source information. They also support
the creation and maintenance of the
Electronic Navigational Chart (ENC),
Additional Military Layer (AML), Inland
ENC (IENC) and paper chart products
from the common verified source data.
Relational Database Support
HPD works with the latest Oracle
versions for data storage and
maintenance. This allows you to
leverage the industry-leading security,
performance and scalability offered
by Oracle in the management
of your spatial information.
Powerful Compilation Tools
Source data compilation is aided by
HPD’s support for a multitude of raster
and vector GIS formats. Data can
be captured directly from these GIS
sources, or used as a basis for manual or
automatic digitizing. Existing paper charts
in digital format and S-57 products can
also be easily loaded into the database.
Sophisticated tools also allow
you to create sounding groups,
collection objects and master and
slave relationships. For paper chart
compilation, you can create symbol
annotations in an automated fashion
and add straight line, curved or
blocks of text using the desired font
and justification. All of which can
dramatically reduce compilation time.
ONE FEATURE, ONE TIME™

C A R I S ™ | M A R I N E G I S E X P E R T S
Efficient Product Creation
and Maintenance
HPD has been designed and
built to allow creation and
updating of multiple kinds
of products from a single
source. Updates to a source
object (e.g. buoy) need to be
completed only once and all
products using the source
object are then flagged for
updating. This provides a
user-friendly process that
minimizes duplication of
effort. For historical purposes,
HPD also tracks changes to
the objects and stores each
version of an issued product.
Quality Control
HPD has a complete set of
embedded validation tools,
including the IHO S-58
standard, to ensure that your
chart products can be used
with confidence. In addition,
user-defined tests can be
created to meet your specific
validation criteria. If any errors
are found, advanced identifica-
tion and repair tools exist to
quickly correct the errors.
Objects stored in HPD also
have a certification status,
which is used in quality assur-
ance workflows. Thanks to the
user access controls offered
by HPD, only users with the
appropriate privileges can
make changes to the certifica-
tion, which ensures product
quality.
Evolution to S-100
Introduction of the S-100
data standard will lead to the
replacement of the existing
S-57 based specifications.
CARIS is intimately involved
in the development of the new
S-100 standards and related
product specifications and is
a key industry contributor. As
such, CARIS is incorporating
the relevant S-100 specifica-
tions into HPD as they become
available. Your investment
in HPD today will provide
you with access to the S-100
capabilities you will need for
tomorrow.
System Extensibility
A series of customizable
programming interfaces are
provided to facilitate the
interaction and integration
of HPD with other external
systems and applications. You
can also extend your applica-
tion of HPD with available
modules to facilitate raster
chart production, creation of
nautical publications (e.g. No-
tices to Mariners and Lists of
Lights) and the calculation and
maintenance of maritime limits
and boundaries; all within the
same database solution.
Ping-to-Chart™
HPD is a comprehensive
system for the storage and
management of marine spatial
data, and efficient production
of multiple product types.
When used in conjunction with
other Ping-to-Chart products,
HPD becomes your enterprise
solution to incorporate new
hydrographic features into
chart production, and the
source for spatial data sharing
and discovery with other
stakeholders. CARIS offers
the functionality to streamline
your operation, from Ping-to-
Chart.

The Complete Solution
The LOTS software provides a complete
set of tools to enable coastal states
to submit a claim under UNCLOS
Article 76. This includes the ability to
determine the geomorphological foot
of the continental slope and the ability
to create the constraints and formulae
lines defined in the Scientific and
Technical Guidelines of the Commission
on the Limits of the Continental Shelf. It
is also used extensively in non-Article
76 applications, such as to provide
solutions for maritime boundary
disputes or for building the cadastral
fabric for effective marine management.
Robust Algorithms
The LOTS software contains
sophisticated and robust geodetic
tools allowing the creation of median
and equidistant lines, equiratio lines,
envelope of arcs, bisectors, loxodromes
and geodesics. These capabilities
enable you to carry out your Law of the
Sea work to the highest standards and
with complete geodetic confidence.
Greater Interoperability
LOTS Limits and Boundaries™ as
an add-on in CARIS BASE Editor™

Database Efficiencies
The LOTS Limits and Boundaries tools
as an add-on in CARIS HPD™ allows
territorial or archipelagic baselines, as well
as maritime limits and boundaries, to be
defined and maintained within a relational
database environment. This can provide
huge efficiencies for organizations that
need to revisit baselines and maritime
zones delineations frequently, or define
new maritime boundaries with neighbours.
Free Digital Data
The LOTS software ships with close to 5GB
of public domain data, including a world
vector shoreline, ETOPO digital elevation
models, a world sediment thickness model
and the Digital Chart of the World. This data
complements data owned by coastal States
and allows the creation of a complete
preliminary desktop study without the
initial constraint of new survey data.
Assisting Universities
Many academic institutions that have
programs relating to maritime law and
marine spatial planning are using the
LOTS software as an integral part of
their curriculum. CARIS encourages
this by making the software available to
universities for a greatly reduced price. The
academic version of the software contains
all the functionality of the full package but
is constrained to a geographical area of
interest.
Ping-to-Chart™
As a standalone system, LOTS has all the
tools required to determine your maritime
limits and boundaries. When used in
conjunction with other Ping-to-Chart
products, it provides enhanced analysis
capabilities and can produce essential
content for map or chart. CARIS offers the
functionality to streamline your operation,

  • 1. Using CARIS Onboard CARIS Onboard supports the same range of sonars and acquisition formats as CARIS HIPS™ and SIPS™. Large volumes of data are automatically imported and the trusted HIPS and SIPS algorithms are applied. CARIS Onboard generates a HIPS project and can be easily configured to output other products, such as DEMs and image mosaics. All of which are kept up to date as new data is processed. By the time the survey platform has completed its mission a fully geo- referenced DEM and mosaic, along with a HIPS project, are available for final quality control and use in survey deliverables. System Overview The CARIS Onboard software has three main components: Process Designer provides a graphical interface to design and configure data processing workflows. It allows users to add, customize and save a variety of processing tasks. This includes data import, tide and sound velocity corrections, creation of output data products and automated data cleaning (e.g. using CUBE). Standard processing workflow templates are also provided. Onboard Service is an automated service that monitors for raw data files from an acquisition system and batch processes the acquired survey data. As new data is detected it is automatically processed using the workflows defined through the Process Designer. The output data products (e.g. HIPS project, DEMs and mosaics) are also registered for remote access. Products and quality information generated by the Onboard Service are streamed to the dedicated Control Centre or to desktop applications, such as HIPS and SIPS. This enables the hydrographer to view the geo-referenced survey in near real-time for quality control and decision support while the survey is underway. Control Centre provides a single access point for users to configure, manage and monitor the Onboard Service. Status information about the processing is displayed alongside a map window showing survey coverage and data quality. The Control Centre can be used on a vessel or accessed remotely from an office location, via an internet connection. Built on decades of hydrographic data processing expertise and supported by the highly scalable CSAR framework, CARIS Onboard™ enables users to process data from a range of sensors in near real-time to minimize data conversion and processing times. Designed with autonomous operations in mind, CARIS Onboard can also save valuable time and resources when used on survey vessels and launches. • 2. Deployment Options CARIS Onboard can be installed on a desktop computer, laptop or directly on to the computer payload of your autonomous vehicle. It is certified on Windows 7 and will soon be available for Linux operating systems. Hardware versions are also available as a rack mount for dedicated vessel operations or as a water tight canister for subsea vehicle use. The computer specifications for the hardware versions of CARIS Onboard have been designed with tomorrow’s survey sensors in mind to provide the processing speed and disk space needed. OEM agreements can be arranged for sensor or vehicle manufacturers on request. System Benefits CARIS Onboard automates many of the standard pro- cessing steps required in a modern sonar survey that not only reduce subjectivity, but allow human resources to work on specialized tasks. It is especially optimal for autonomous operations where traditionally data can only be processed after vehicle recovery, which causes a data processing bottleneck. When used with survey launches or unmanned surface vehicles it becomes a force multiplier allowing surveys to be con- ducted more efficiently. With the ever expanding volume of data being collected at higher resolutions CARIS Onboard can significantly reduce your Ping-to-Chart™ timeline. Ping-to-Chart CARIS Onboard fits seamlessly into the existing Ping-to-Chart suite of software, providing near real-time seafloor map- ping and dramatically reduc- ing the overall project time. Integrating with both autono- mous and traditional survey platforms, CARIS Onboard pro- vides an operational advantage and allows your highly skilled workforce to concentrate on getting the best results. • 3. Number One HIPS and SIPS is recognized in the global marine community as the number one hydrographic data processing system. By supporting over 40 sonar formats, it can process data from virtually any system configuration. Latest Processing Techniques The latest processing techniques can eas- ily be applied to your high volume sonar data, ensuring efficient and repeatable results. This includes total propagated uncertainty, CUBE processing, statistical surface cleaning, dynamic 3D data editing, and an array of geodetic and quality gate filters. CARIS knows that accuracy and efficiency are all-important in your business, which is why the HIPS™ and SIPS™ solution integrates the processing of bathymetry, water column and seafloor imagery in a single application. With HIPS and SIPS vast amounts of sonar data can be interrogated at speed, making full use of the latest computing power and saving you valuable time. The software also includes the latest seafloor classification tools and workflows, allowing more information to be extracted from your seafloor measurements. TRUST THE MOST COMPREHENSIVE DATA PROCESSING SYSTEM “My first task when joining the UKHO (in 2002) was to assess all current bathymetry software to help select the primary tool to be used by our staff and the UK Royal Navy for multibeam data processing. • 5. Manage complex marine spatial information, eliminate data redundancy, improve productivity and extend the use of your data holdings with CARIS’ flagship enterprise GIS solution. Hydrographic Production Database™ (HPD) addresses the data management and cartographic production requirements of the world’s largest and most advanced hydrographic agencies. Efficiency is maximized in HPD™ with features being stored only once; this coupled with the ability to associate multiple cartographic representations for different product types has positioned HPD as the number one solution. System Architecture HPD is comprised of client and server software. The HPD Server™ stores source information and derived products in a seamless database. This allows for multiple product types to be easily created from the common source. Changes between the source data and products are efficiently tracked and updates can be easily applied. The HPD clients facilitate the loading, compilation and verification of the source information. They also support the creation and maintenance of the Electronic Navigational Chart (ENC), Additional Military Layer (AML), Inland ENC (IENC) and paper chart products from the common verified source data. Relational Database Support HPD works with the latest Oracle versions for data storage and maintenance. This allows you to leverage the industry-leading security, performance and scalability offered by Oracle in the management of your spatial information. Powerful Compilation Tools Source data compilation is aided by HPD’s support for a multitude of raster and vector GIS formats. Data can be captured directly from these GIS sources, or used as a basis for manual or automatic digitizing. Existing paper charts in digital format and S-57 products can also be easily loaded into the database. Sophisticated tools also allow you to create sounding groups, collection objects and master and slave relationships. For paper chart compilation, you can create symbol annotations in an automated fashion and add straight line, curved or blocks of text using the desired font and justification. All of which can dramatically reduce compilation time. ONE FEATURE, ONE TIME™ www.caris.com C A R I S ™ | M A R I N E G I S E X P E R T S
  • 6. Efficient Product Creation and Maintenance HPD has been designed and built to allow creation and updating of multiple kinds of products from a single source. Updates to a source object (e.g. buoy) need to be completed only once and all products using the source object are then flagged for updating. This provides a user-friendly process that minimizes duplication of effort. For historical purposes, HPD also tracks changes to the objects and stores each version of an issued product. Quality Control HPD has a complete set of embedded validation tools, including the IHO S-58 standard, to ensure that your chart products can be used with confidence. In addition, user-defined tests can be created to meet your specific validation criteria. If any errors are found, advanced identifica- tion and repair tools exist to quickly correct the errors. Objects stored in HPD also have a certification status, which is used in quality assur- ance workflows. Thanks to the user access controls offered by HPD, only users with the appropriate privileges can make changes to the certifica- tion, which ensures product quality. Evolution to S-100 Introduction of the S-100 data standard will lead to the replacement of the existing S-57 based specifications. CARIS is intimately involved in the development of the new S-100 standards and related product specifications and is a key industry contributor. As such, CARIS is incorporating the relevant S-100 specifica- tions into HPD as they become available. Your investment in HPD today will provide you with access to the S-100 capabilities you will need for tomorrow. System Extensibility A series of customizable programming interfaces are provided to facilitate the interaction and integration of HPD with other external systems and applications. You can also extend your applica- tion of HPD with available modules to facilitate raster chart production, creation of nautical publications (e.g. No- tices to Mariners and Lists of Lights) and the calculation and maintenance of maritime limits and boundaries; all within the same database solution. Ping-to-Chart™ HPD is a comprehensive system for the storage and management of marine spatial data, and efficient production of multiple product types. When used in conjunction with other Ping-to-Chart products, HPD becomes your enterprise solution to incorporate new hydrographic features into chart production, and the source for spatial data sharing and discovery with other stakeholders.
