How may the superheroes be the reflection of American history?

Superheroes are the gods of American mythology. They are the incarnation of those who we’d like to be: pioneers and heroes. The comics influenced the Americans, they evolved since their creation to be closer to the people, to be what they need. So we can decipher the American history behind the evolution of the comics.

  • Hi Alexandre, your work is very cool! As far as I can see, talking about American history thanks to comics is a very clever and clear way to make alive both superheroes and historical figures. It's funny to see that the link between reality and superheroes is very strong. That's maybe why comics as you said are quite the modern mythological texts. Thus, we can see that they are very powerful media who can influence people. My last question would be : Did American history influence superheroes comics or did the comics influence the history?

  • Hey Alex, I really enjoyed your presentation. You did a great job:). I am surprised of the interpretation you gave. I never thought about considering superheroes has a part of mythology. Actually, it is a really interesting approach deserving deeper research. Also, the comparison between US History and the evolution of comics is quite relevant. For example, I was pleased to learn that comics integrated black characters after the Civil right movement.

  • This presentation is really cool. The superheroes follow the same history that the real life. Like Captain America to fight during the second WW. it's very interesting.

  • Good presentation Alexandre. Now I understood the history behind the evolution of superheroes and their relationship with american history. Honestly, I didn't think about that before. It is true that superheroes represented a part of the situations that people lived in America, however, they are still fictional characters that people should'nt be influenced. Unfortunately, there are lots of children who trie to imitate superheroes, and they become violent sometimes. So parents should be aware about that.

How may the superheroes be the reflection of American history?

  1. 1. HOW MAY THE SUPERHEROES BE THE REFLECTION OF AMERICAN HISTORY? By Alexandre Korda
  2. 2. • SUPERHEROES ARE THE GODS OF AMERICAN MYTHOLOGY. THEY ARE THE INCARNATION OF THOSE WHO WE’D LIKE TO BE: PIONEERS AND HEROES. THEIR CREATION IS A KIND OF AMERICAN ART. • HOW MAY THE 1930’S HEROES STILL BE TOPICAL? • AN INTERVIEW OF ANDY WARHOL IN THE 60’S IS INTERESTING. THE JOURNALIST ASKED: “YOU, ROSENQUIST AND LICHTENSTEIN ARE WORKING ALL INDEPENDENTLY. DOESN’T SEEM CURIOUS TO YOU THAT YOU LOOK AT THE WORLD IN THE SAME WAY?” AND HE ANSWERED “I THINK WE JUST READ A LOT OF COMIC BOOKS”. • THE COMICS INFLUENCED THE AMERICANS, THEY EVOLVED SINCE THEIR CREATION TO BE CLOSER TO THE PEOPLE, TO BE WHAT THEY NEED. SO WE CAN DECIPHER THE AMERICAN HISTORY BEHIND THE EVOLUTION OF THE COMICS.
  3. 3. THE GOLDEN AGE 1938 - 1954

  12. 12. 1950 THE SUPERHEROES WERE SHARPLY CRITICISM, SUPERMAN WAS ACCUSED TO REPRESENT AN AGGRESSIVE RACIAL SUPERIORITY. CHURCHES AND GROUPS OF CITIZENS BOYCOTTED THE SUPERHEROES. THEN, THE FREE VIOLENCE AND THE MONSTERS WERE DELETED IN THE COMICS. SUPERMAN STOPPED FIRE AND BRING BACK SOME CATS. HE WAS ADOPTING THE EASY POST-WAR WAY OF LIFE.
