OBJECTIVES: To study the use of cellular and cordless telephones and the risk for malignant brain
tumours. METHODS: Two case-control studies on malignant brain tumours diagnosed during
1997-2003 included answers from 905 (90%) cases and 2,162 (89%) controls aged 20-80 years. We
present pooled analysis of the results in the two studies. RESULTS: Cumulative lifetime use for
>2,000 h yielded for analogue cellular phones odds ratio (OR)=5.9, 95% confidence interval
(CI)=2.5-14, digital cellular phones OR=3.7, 95% CI=1.7-7.7, and for cordless phones OR=2.3,
95% CI=1.5-3.6. Ipsilateral exposure increased the risk for malignant brain tumours; analogue
OR=2.1, 95% CI=1.5-2.9, digital OR=1.8, 95% CI=1.4-2.4, and cordless OR=1.7, 95% CI=1.3-2.2.
For high-grade astrocytoma using >10 year latency period analogue phones yielded OR=2.7, 95%
CI=1.8-4.2, digital phones OR=3.8, 95% CI=1.8-8.1, and cordless phones OR=2.2, 95% CI=1.3-
3.9. In the multivariate analysis all phone types increased the risk. Regarding digital phones
OR=3.7, 95% CI=1.5-9.1 and cordless phones OR=2.1, 95% CI=0.97-4.6 were calculated for
malignant brain tumours for subjects with first use use <20 years of age, higher than in older
persons. CONCLUSION: Increased risk was obtained for both cellular and cordless phones, highest
in the group with >10 years latency period.

So, magnetic fields could produce electric currents, and we already know that electric currents produce magnetic fields. Would it perhaps be possible for space to support a wave motion alternating between the two? Sort of: magnetic field ---> electric current ---> magnetic field ---> electric current ---> ... There was one stumbling block. Such a wave could not exist in empty space, because empty space contained no copper wires and could not carry the currents needed to complete the above cycle. A brilliant young Scotsman, James Clerk Maxwell, solved the riddle in 1861 by proposing that the equations of electricity needed one more term, representing an electric current which could travel through empty space, but only for very fast oscillations. With that term added (the "displacement current"), the equations of electricity and magnetism allowed a wave to exist, propagating at the speed of light. The drawing below illustrates such a wave--green is the magnetic part, blue the electric part--the term Maxwell added. The wave is drawn propagating just along one line. Actually it fills space, but it would be hard to draw that . Electromagnetic Wave (see text above) Maxwell proposed that it indeed was light. There had been earlier hints--as noted above, the velocity of light had appeared unexpectedly in the equations of electricity and magnetism--and further studies confirmed it. For instance, if a beam of light hits the side of a glass prism, only part of it enters--another part gets reflected. Maxwell's theory correctly predicted properties of the reflected beam. Then Heinrich Hertz in Germany showed that an electric current bouncing back and forth in a wire (nowadays it would be called an "antenna") could be the source of such waves. (The current also produces a magnetic field in accordance with Ampere's law, but that field decreases rapidly with distance.) Electric sparks create such back-and-forth currents when they jump across a gap--hence the crackling caused by lightning on AM radio--and Hertz in 1886 used such sparks to send a radio signal across his lab. Later the Italian Marconi, with more sensitive detectors, extended the range of radio reception, and in 1903 detected signals from Europe as far as Cape Cod, Massachussets. http://www-istp.gsfc.nasa.gov/Education/wemwaves.html ONDA ELECTROMAGNETICA Onda que está constituida por campos eléctricos y magnéticos que se propagan a través del espacio en forma perpendicular. Los campos magnéticos y eléctricos que son producidos por una antena viajan grandes distancias y transportan energía, a esto se le denomina radiación. ________________________________________________ Más soporte bibliográfico sobre lesión térmica Summary of biological effects and epidemiological studies (100 kHz–300 GHz) Available experimental evidence indicates that the exposure of resting humans for approximately 30 min to EMF producing a whole-body SAR of between 1 and 4 W kg21 results in a body temperature increase of less than 1 °C. Animal data indicate a threshold for behavioral responses in the same SAR range. Exposure to more intense fields, producing SAR values in excess of 4 W kg21, can overwhelm the thermoregulatory capacity of the body and produce harmful levels of tissue heating. Many laboratory studies with rodent and nonhuman primate models have demonstrated the broad range of tissue damage resulting from either partial-body or whole-body heating producing temperature rises in excess of 1–2°C. The sensitivity of various types of tissue to thermal damage varies widely, but the threshold for irreversible effects in even the most sensitive tissues is greater than 4 W kg21 under normal environmental conditions. These data form the basis for an occupational exposure restriction of 0.4 W kg21, which provides a large margin of safety for other limiting conditions such as high ambient temperature, humidity, or level of physical activity. Data on human responses to high-frequency EMF that produce detectable heating have been obtained from controlled exposure of volunteers and from epidemiological studies on workers exposed to sources such as radar, medical diathermy equipment, and heat sealers. They are fully supportive of the conclusions drawn from laboratory work, that adverse biological effects can be caused by temperature rises in tissue that exceed 1°C. En: http://www.icnirp.de/documents/emfgdl.pdf_________________________________ In the high frequency region (10 MHz–300 GHz), heating effects are well established in volunteer and animal experiments. International guidelines on limiting exposure to electromagnetic fields (ICNIRP 1998) seek to prevent adverse effects of excessive wholebody and localized heating. In addition, guidance is given concerning the avoidance of the annoying auditory perception of pulsed EMF. There are no established adverse health effects below these levels of exposure, although the possibility has been raised in connection with RF fields emitted by mobile phone that there may be subtle transitory effects on nervous system function and behavior (e.g., effects on cognitive performance and EEG).
