Welcome to this session of the ALE knowledge café. In today’s session, we will provide you with an overview of network requirements for helping Healthcare Providers optimize their Care Pathway.
In 2016, Deloitte released a study which identified four major trends that are impacting the healthcare industry in the coming years.
Regulations and Compliance Adapting to Market Forces Transformation and Digital Innovation Cost Control
A few statistics show that: 1 Billion people around the world lack access to a healthcare System There is a major shortage of physicians and care givers, e.g. 230,000 physicians alone across Europe
Regulations and Compliance include patient and product safety, as well as privacy of patient records and information. Adapting to market forces looks at alternative financial and operational models, as well as, medical tourism (traveling outside the country of residence for the purpose of receiving medical care), Talent (finding trained medical professionals, mainly physicians and nurses) and Savvy patients (patients who do their own research and manage their care more independently). Transformation and digital innovation involves the trend towards digitization of everything, Electronic Medical Records, Tele-medicine/health resulting from the explosion of mobility and IoT in healthcare devices and applications, up to the cloud and virtualization. All wrapped in tight security throughout the network. Cost control is impacted as providers, payers, governments, and other stakeholders strive to deliver effective, efficient, and equitable care in an ecosystem that is undergoing a dramatic and fundamental shift in business, clinical, and operating models. This shift is being fueled by aging and growing populations; the proliferation of chronic diseases; heightened focus on care quality and value; evolving financial and quality regulations; informed and empowered consumers; and innovative treatments and technologies — all of which are leading to rising costs and an increase in spending levels for care provision, infrastructure improvements, and technology innovations. So how will these trends impact the network infrastructure which will enable a hospital to deliver the services that clinicians and patients expect, digitize everything to simplify work and reduce errors, keep costs within budget while ensuring that government requirements, regulations and compliance are met?
The main objective from a network infrastructure point of view is to reduce TCO, or total cost of ownership. This means: Reducing capital expenditure while increasing operations efficiency
Regulations and Compliance require a healthcare organization to comply to Industry Regulations and Privacy obligations
Adapting to Market Forces means that the healthcare market is changing and that Departmental Demands are also changing

In support of Deloitte’s research, there are a number of technology trends that are impacting healthcare, which include Mobility, Digitization and IoT technology.
Specifically, with Health professionals, mobile device adoption continues to expand, as they use more devices to do research and for medical purposes. In kind, there is an increase in mobile device app usage as an growing number of physicians feel that mobile health apps can improve patients’ health and outcomes.
With Patients, more than 75% expect to use digital services for healthcare in the future. And while in hospital, patients want to have access to social media and the internet from their bedside.
Patients at home, are taking healthcare management into their own hands at an increasing rate. They are looking up health information, using health apps, use a mobile device to track health patterns, store health information electronically and have made appointments, checked lab results and manage/order prescriptions online.
Based on the increased use of a hospital network, by clinicians and patients, can the network infrastructure sustain the growth anticipated in the hospital’s departments?
Mobility, Digitization and IoT technology also affect the way healthcare and hospitals digitize their information, their workflow evolution to wi-fi and remote patient monitoring and tracking.
The Digitization of Everything involves technology’s reach across industries and the healthcare is no exception. Everything from mobile innovations to wearables and advanced technologies are changing the way doctors care for patients and the way patients care for themselves. These innovations are transforming every aspect of health and wellness, from patient intake to record keeping to testing and treatment. There have been huge transformations and advancements in healthcare thanks to technology, and these are being readily embraced by doctors, hospitals, specialists and other providers.
Electronic Medical/Health Records - People and their providers were slow to buy into EMRs because of privacy and security concerns, and as recently as 2009, only 16% of US hospitals were using them. But by 2013, that had jumped to 80% – likely because there is evidence to suggest that EMRs can deliver better healthcare outcomes by reducing errors and making it easier for doctors, hospitals and pharmacies to deliver fully-integrated, trackable and collaborative care. Efficiency is another side effect of EMRs, especially now that healthcare is so data driven.
Digital Imaging - The advent of digital imaging has enabled doctors and patients to get results in a timely manner, as well as, enable doctors to more easily share the information with other doctors and specialists, to provide the best assessment and care plan for patients.
Telehealth - This umbrella term for everything from nursing call centers and videoconferencing to patient portals and remote monitoring is one of the most important modern innovations in the healthcare sphere. Studies repeatedly show the benefit of virtual modes of care, particularly in rural settings and ICUs. In addition to the obvious improvements to patient outcomes, there are numerous cost benefits to telehealth for both providers and people.
Workflow - digitization and automation of processes are key to streamlining workflows to enable providers to spend less time on non-care related tasks and more time on patients.
Next we have the Workflow evolution to wi-fi – The evolution of workflow to wi-fi is providing seamless, secure access to digital data through an integrated wireless infrastructure which helps improve patient care, reduce medical errors and facilitate workflow. A majority of clinicians say mobile enables faster, more flexible workflows.
And finally, we have Patient remote monitoring and tracking using Wearables - While wearables may still seem like a curiosity embraced mainly by tech enthusiasts, in the healthcare sphere they encompass more than the Fitbit and various lifetracking smartwatches. Home monitoring devices track patient vital signs like heart rate, blood pressure and blood sugar; movements and prescription compliance; and more. They can send clinical data to care providers as a report or in real time. According to a Berg Insight report, 3 million patients worldwide were using home monitoring in 2014 with that number expected to jump to 19.1 million by 2018.

Let’s take a moment to look at the care pathway.
Care pathways, also known as Clinical pathways or critical pathways, are one of the main tools used to manage the quality in healthcare concerning the standardization of care processes. It has been shown that their implementation reduces the variability in clinical practice and improves outcomes.
The Care pathways goals are: To Improve efficiency in the use of resources To Finish work in a set time.
To achieve those targets, Care pathways promote organized and efficient patient care based on evidence-based practice.
In this slide, the diagram pictures a possible graphical representation of a care pathway. We have a time scale focused on the patient experience. We begin on the left side, with the patient greeting and we finish with the patient outcome on the right. Between these two states, the patient goes through different steps. In each step, a specific process has been implemented to ensure the best quality care involving one or several different categories of heath-care staff (as nurse, physician and administrator).
Optimizing the care pathway involves a network that supports every process/step, in order to: Provide a better patient and visitor experience Support digitization and Electronic Medical Records (EMR) Ensure efficient and high quality care delivery by clinical staff Optimize physician time
