Index :
• Introduction
• Activity 1: Hunting for objects made of
concrete
• Activity 2: comparing different kinds of
cements
• Activity 3: Comparing different concrete
formulations
• Activity 4: Reinforcing concrete
• Activity 5: Testing properties of concrete
• Product Idea: The luminous concrete
What is the concrete ?
Are substances made up of several materials are
aggregates, cement and water with some blanks
and can add some other materials for specific
properties.
Activity 1: Hunting for objects made of concrete
Old castles Bridges
Old building (theater) Roads
Activity 2: comparing different kinds of cements
• Procedure : We made three samples and the samples :first
sample was cement and water, second cement, water,
sugar and the 3rd sample was cement, water and salt.
Result: The sample that was consist of sugar showed
decrease in hardening rate that mean the sugar is -ve
catalyst, while adding salt showed increase in hardening
rate as salt is +ve catalyst.
Table

Activity 3 :comparing different concrete
formulations
Procedures : We made three samples have the same mass
and weight of 60 grams, but differed in contents samples
were the (sand - gravel -mixture of sand and gravel) and
Results : we concluded that the best sample is sand and
gravel mixture after we calculated the density = mass /
volume and it was the better one to make the concrete
sample as it had the lowest volume.
Activity 3 :comparing different concrete
formulations
We Made 3 concrete sample
as the table show , and we’ll
test them.
We add other materials to
concrete samples such as
cotton & wood and will test
the effect of that to the
samples.
Activity 4: Reinforcing concrete
By Testing the 3 concrete
samples in the testing tool
we got the followed
Activity 5: Testing properties of
concrete
The best sample is the
E reinforcement

The last one is I
project idea
the luminous concrete
• The idea is to mix the a glowing
material Strontium Aluminate with
concrete and use it in the pavements and
streets to become a luminous concrete
than using a light from the bulb shown
in the street which will save electricity
The Idea
Procedures :
We made a sample of the concrete mixing with
(strontium aluminates ) Allow concrete to dry,
which can take up to 24 hours. Leave molds in a
dry area that has low humidity.
Results :
The Results show the light emitting fro the sample
for a period of time, which can be taking place
in paving streets instead of light bulbs.
Recommendation
Most strontium aluminates are not compatible
with water and therefore would be destroyed by
rain within a year. so we recommend to try find
other effective material To solve this problem,
the material used is not effective enough as it
will emit for long time , so we recommend to
add other materials to emit and glow long time
Conclusions
We enjoy Al-Bairaq Workshop and
learn new things about concrete like
it’s properties and features , we think
and innovate an idea which can be
useful to help Qatar .
Many thanks to my teachers, school and AL-Bairaq team from
Center for Advanced Materials (CAM), Qatar University for
supporting us during our journey with a AL-Bairaq.
Also, I would like to thank the Partner, sponsors UNESCO, Qatar
National Commission, Ras Gas, Maersk and Shell.
