Both of the news talked about a
scientific study that is still not complete,
but it doesn´t have less importance.
Contrary to this, it gives them more
meaning because that lets us now the
importance of getting answers and with
those answers we could make a real
change in humans lives.
The purpose of the news is to inform us
about 2 different problems that are
attacking men´s health so we can get
awareness about it and try to eliminate
the risks until the scientists find a
solution.

DNA carries the genetic information
that will show the different
characteristics of each individual.
So if there is a damage in the DNA
there is going to be a mutation in the
function of a cell or in a phenotypical
level.
In these days, there are some
methods that allow us to analyze the
DNA structure before the illness or
mutation show up, but we are going
to see that this scientific discovery is
getting into a wrong and immoral
path

Sleeping at night reduces the
concentration of the melatonin which is
associated to a little expression of the
8-OH-DG, the most common mutagenic
DNA lesion.
• How they know it?
They measure the 8-OH-DG in 50 shift
workers
• What did they find?
the melatonin was lower in this group of
workers when they slept during the day
and the 8-OH-DG in the urine was
lower than normal.
• Student’s opinion
This kind of problem is the one that we
usually overlook, but is actually really
important because the health of those
workers or ourselves were in danger
because of this .

advance, but also about an ethical
issue.
• What did they do?
They were trying to get the whole
genome from unborn babies and from
it, be able to see what illness or
mutation could the baby develop when
it grows.
• Why did they do that?
The first thought was good: They did it,
just to try to cure the trouble in the
patient before the symptoms appear.
But as we´ll see, this information will be
used for different purposes.

passing the information from the
mother’s cell to the daughter's cell. It
gives instruction for a protein to
accomplish a function in the organism.
This instruction is called a gene.
If in some cases such gene breaks up,
there could appear an alteration in the
body, something that we know as a
mutation.

It’s clear that the possibility of
knowing what diseases we will
suffer is an advantage to be
able to avoid them as best as
possible, but, only is such
information is used to improve
people´s lives, and not to make
it even more complicated.
Therefore I believe that despite
this being a great step forward,
we aren’t ready to confront this
situation.
