2. Jam-e-Jahan Numa
• First printed Urdunewspaper
• Published in Calcutta in 1822
• Its Editor was Munshi sada sukh
• its language was changed into persian
3. Al-Hilal (newspaper)
• weekly Urdu language

• established by Maulana
Abul Kalam Azad
• criticism of the British Raj
in India.
• Founded in 1912
4. Paigham
• in 1921, Abdul Kalam Azad came out with a
newspaper called “Paigham‟ in Calcutta
• which was followed by “Sabah‟ a newspaper by Qazi
Abdul Ghaffar from Delhi. It was
• during 1938 – 1947 that the Muslim Press picked up
the pace and grew rapidly with Urdu Press having
new traditions to add and follow.
5. Dawn
• “Create Muslim Press Campaign”
• Quaid-i-Azam founded “Dawn‟ newspaper in
October 1942 from Delhi followed.
• The Quaid-i-Azam also started “Manshoor” an Urdu
daily from Delhi which was the official organ of the
All India Muslim League. It was edited by Syed
Hasan Riaz.
6. Daily Jang
• Mir Khalil-ur-rehman
founded Jang Group of
Newspapers on 14th
October 1947.
• This is biggest and most
circulated Urdu
newspaper group.
7. Nawa-i-waqat
• 23rd march 1940 Hameed Nizami founded the first
newspaper for future Pakistan. It was supported the
Pakistan Movement.
8. The Comrade
• The Comrade was a
weekly English-language
newspaper.
• That was published and
edited by Maulana
Mohammad Ali Jauhar
between 1911 and 1914.
9. The Zamindar
• The Muslim Press
advanced and in
December 1919 came out
with „The Zamindar‟
• which had a circulation of
about 6145 in 1920.
• The founding editor of
this newspaper was
Maulana Zafar Ali Khan
10. Khyber Mail
• Khyber Mail was a daily newspaper published
from Peshawar,
• Sheikh Sanaullah was the founder editor of
Khyber Mail, he started from Peshawar in
1932.
11. “Chashma-e-Faiz” and “Victoria
Paper”
• Munshi Dewan Chand started newspaper for
the first time. He released six newspapers
before the revolution of 1857.
• Among which “Chashma-e-Faiz” and
“Victoria Paper” were very famous.
12. Daily Inqilab
• Daily Inqilab was pre-Partition
Lahore based newspaper. The
newspaper was founded by
Maulana Ghulam Rasool Mehr
and Abdul Majeed Salik.
• Daily Inqilab started in 4 April
1927, newspaper was actually
published and distributed on 2
April 1927,
13. Pakistan Times
• Pakistan Times was a
Pakistani newspaper,
originally established by the
leftist Progressive Papers
Limited based in Lahore,
Pakistan.
• It was founded in February
4, 1947. Its editor-in-chief
was Maira Iftikhar.
14. Millat & Tanzeem
• “Millat” appeared from
Peshawar under the editorship
of Rashid Akhtar Nadvi and
“Tanzeem” from Quetta with
Nasim Hijazi as editor. Though,
ill equipped, these papers
played a significant role in
countering Congress
propaganda in areas where its
influence was great.
15. Azad
• From Calcutta appeared “Azad” in Bengali under the
editorship of Maulana Muhammad Akram Khan in
1936 who had served as President of the Bengal
Provincial Muslim League for a long time.
• He remained the Chief Editor till 1968 when he died
at the age of 100 years. This paper shifted to Dacca
in 1948 and had the largest circulation among Bengali
papers in the former East Pakistan.
16. Ehsan
• Under private enterprise, quite a number of Urdu papers
also came in the field. Among these was “Ehsan” edited
by Maulana Murtaza Ahmed Khan Maikash and Chiragh
Hasan Hasrat. Appearing from Lahore, it was the first
paper to install a teleprinter and courageously worked as a
mouthpiece of AIML. Later the two editors resigned and
established “Shahbaz” a new daily from Lahore which was
a much better specimen of journalism than Ehsan.
Maulana Maikash was an editorial writer of repute and
was considered the best after Maulana Ghulam Rasul
Mehr.
17. weeklies
• Elsewhere a number of weeklies also sprang up.
“Star” in Bombay was edited by Aziz Beg. Another
weekly of the same name from Allahabad was
sponsored by Sir Shifaat Ahmed Khan, “Decean
Times” from Madras and “Muslim Voice” from
Karachi which was owned and edited by Pir Ali
Muhammad Rashdi.
18. the API and the UPI news agencies
• A great problem for the Muslims was that the API
and the UPI news agencies were controlled by
Hindus. The news of the Muslims were either
blacked out or distorted. Therefore, a news agency
named Orient Press of India was launched. Though
financially weak and under equipped, it did help in
circulating news about Muslim politics.
19. Star of India
• From Calcutta appeared a daily named
“Star of India”, first under the
editorship of Pothan Joseph and then
of Lawrence P Atkison. Owned by Kh
Shahabuddin and his family, it did good
work in interpreting Muslim politics but
was later replaced by “Morning News”
jointly owned by Abdur Rahman
Siddiqi and Kh Nurruddin, brother of
Khwaja Shahabuddin. The Morning
News was more vigorous in its
approach for Muslim cause and
continued publishing till after partition
and was later shifted to Dacca,
20. Eastern Time
• From Lahore, appeared “Eastern Times” originally
sponsored by Ferozsons under the temporary
editorship of Allama Abdullah Yusuf Ali. He was
followed by F K Khan Durrani who had written a
number of books on Muslim politics. Though
shabby in appearance and deficient in equipment, it
did play a significant role in projecting Muslim
viewpoint. For a couple of years there existed in
Lahore the “New Times” weekly started by Malik
Barkat Ali which acted as the mouthpiece of AML.

22. Qodunt Martund
• A Hindi newspaper was also launched in 1826 which
was called Qodunt Martund released in Calcutta.
• It's founder and editor was one Harihar Dutta.
• During the 19thcentury Madras and Bombay were
the most important and largest press centers.
23. The Hindu
• English-language daily newspaper published in
Chennai (Madras).
• generally regarded as one of India’s most influential
dailies.
• Established in 1878 as a weekly, The Hindu became a
daily in 1889.
• While India was under British rule, the paper spoke
out for independence.
24. The Times of India
• The Times of India is an Indian English-language
daily newspaper.
• It was published in 1838 by Jaideep Bose
25. The
Pioneer
• The Pioneer is an
English language daily
newspaper in India.
• It was founded in 1865
by George Allen.
26. The Bombay
Chronicle
• The Bombay Chronicle was an English-language
newspaper.
• published from Mumbai.
• started in 1910 by Sir Pherozeshah Mehta.
• a prominent lawyer, who later became the president
of the Indian National Congress in 1890.
• Final issue date: 1959
27. The Hindustan Times
• Hindustan Times is an
Indian English-language
daily newspaper.
• Inaugurated by Mahatma
Gandhi in 1924,
• it played integral roles in
the Indian independence
movement as a nationalist
and pro-Congress daily.
28. The Statesman
• The Statesman is an Indian English-language
broadsheet daily newspaper founded in 1875 and
published simultaneously in Kolkata, New Delhi,
Siliguri and Bhubaneswar. It incorporates and is
directly descended from The Friend of India,
founded in 1818.
• It was established in 1875 by Robert Knight
29. Newspaper of Karachi
• In Karachi, the only newspapers that existed were
The Daily Gazette, The Sindh Observer and The
Karachi Gazette which were all Hindu owned.
30. The Tribune
• The Tribune is an Indian English-language daily
newspaper.
• Published from Amritsar, Bathinda, Chandigarh,
New Delhi, Jalandhar and Ludhiana.
• It was founded on 2 February 1881, in Lahore by
Sardar Dyal Singh Majithia,
31. The Civil and Military Gazette
• The Civil and Military
Gazette was a daily English
language newspaper
• Published by E.A. Smedley.
• It was published from
Lahore, Simla and Karachi,
some times simultaneously,
until its closure in 1963.
