  5. 5. Why Supply Chain Strategy Will Change  The “death march to efficiency” (and why we are done with it)  Reshoring (it’s happening, and it’s only going to accelerate)  Technology (but not the tech you might be thinking of!) and its imminent impact on supply chains of the future
  6. 6. The Death March is Over Why? The toll…On Supply Chains and People https://www.nytimes.com/2022/10/09/opinion/business-economics/freight-train- mismanagement.html?unlocked_article_code=AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAACEIPuonUktbfqYhlSFUbCibSRdkhr xqAwvLS2706i2TlaSWeTjBFyuUeGM-O4UrMaqp_Iscp1jWdAdpAK7omQvV9w- pSOVArSxWtptHMvqU5FBgPiND5WHIqjdWKVKok8DTuYy7hIr8um7e1tlfYYGHqRKCM1yI- dwdhp49ndlr73nUPwKyVFOdly5Ipi6dac5N-RzsGZiiNueC5SEktfYXbMWyPr1U- SOpbWjrMndeD6rJmcARaCV_OSHMX8n9roZoHe4tRZPCjWkZmLMnugrwRCXhrLZOpBfAyTovXk7ZosN3d uK1jnuX0bm20kNZCHF6yl74&smid=nytcore-ios-share&referringSource=articleShare Mismanagement and ‘Monster Trains’ Have Wrecked American Rail Oct. 9, 2022 Average train length grew around 25 percent from 2008 to 2017, and companies now regularly run trains that are three miles long. “Death march to efficiency”, Mike Raftery, CEO SCM Connections My mother finally understood what we do The ultimate dialed-in efficiency
  7. 7. The Death March is Over Why? The toll…On the Planet https://ourworldindata.org/co2-emissions-from-transport Road transport accounts for 15% of total CO2 emissions. 29.4% comes from trucks carrying freight. Aviation accounts for 11.6% of transport emissions. International shipping contributes a similar amount, at 10.6%. Rail travel and freight emits very little – only 1% of transport emissions. Transport accounts for around one-fifth of global CO₂ emissions
  8. 8. Reshoring – It’s Happening Why? National Security and Supply Chain Security Over 1,800 companies re-shored production in 2021, setting a new record for re-shoring activity. These companies are looking for logistics facilities, warehouses and distribution sites. Supply chain disruptions are causing many companies to consider onshoring or nearshoring their manufacturing facilities. The COVID-19 pandemic made U.S. manufacturers painfully aware of risks posed by off-shore operations and their dependence on the global supply chain to move their products back to U.S. markets. As a result, many are either planning or already reshoring or near-shoring their production facilities.  https://www.wealthmanagement.com/industrial/surge-re-shoring-activity-continues-creating-more-demand-industrial-space
  9. 9. Technology Driving Changes in the Shape of Supply Chains • Additive Manufacturing – we won’t be moving parts around the world anymore • Energy – we will need to replace that “Electricity = 25%” • Water – will be worth more than fossil fuels and will cause relocations • Autonomous/Guided/Electric Vehicles – will change how we deliver https://www.epa.gov/greenvehicles/fast-facts-transportation-greenhouse-gas-emissions
  10. 10. Supply Chain Strategy – and Design Old Way • Taxes • Costs –Labor Costs –Capital Costs –Inventory Costs • “Total Cost of Delivery” New Way • Cost of Non-Delivery (Revenue) • Ability to Produce • Inventory Insurance • Sustainability Impact
