Dear Esteemed Guests,
Nelson Mandela wisely said “it always seems impossible, until it’s done.”
As we come together 21 years after the founding ofAfrika Tikkun, words cannot adequately express our
gratitude to you for participating in our Inaugural Legacy Gala.
Your generosity over the last 21 years has enabledAfrika Tikkun to conquer a Mount Everest scale task - -
the design and successful implementation of our “Cradle to Career” community development program that
gives hope, meaning and value to tens of thousands of bright, yet poverty-stricken young people so that they
can become pillars of tomorrow’s society.
In 2015 alone, we provided education and training in life skills, career guidance and value-based support to
more than 14,000 young SouthAfricans. On behalf of more than 600 passionateAfrika Tikkun employees
who do ‘angels work’ to enrich the lives of over 20,000 severely disadvantaged young people in the
townships of SouthAfrica, we offer our heartfelt thanks.
We are also proud and honored to celebrate the achievements of our honorees, John Chalsty and June
Tatelman. For the last decade, they have not only shared in our vision but have boldly, generously and
consistently stepped forward to nourish and grow our fledgling programs into the award-winning and
internationally-recognized ‘centers of excellence’ that stand today. Their courage and generosity have been
vital factors in realizing the vision of our founders, philanthropist and businessman Bertie Lubner and the late
Chief Rabbi Cyril Harris, along with the late Nelson Mandela, our Patron-in-Chief in Memorium.
We are also deeply grateful for the support of all of our partners / sponsors and especially DeltaAir Lines, for
flying in four of our young people from SouthAfrica to participate in the annual Safelite Challenge, a triathlon
which has raised over $1 million forAfrika Tikkun. We also thankAfrika Tikkun’s current patrons, including
H.E. Cyril Ramaphosa, SouthAfrica’s Deputy President, and Gill Marcus, the ninth Governor of the South
African Reserve Bank, as well as the members of our Board of Directors,Advisory Board and Junior Board,
for their work and commitment to our cause. We especially thank Felicia Mabuza-Suttle for graciously
agreeing to serve as our celebrity auctioneer.
Finally, we would like to acknowledge everyone who supported us in creating this event experience for
you, including Michele Wilson of Taylored Productions; K.R.E.A.T.E.; Drum Café; On The Mark Graphics;
Jerry Rose Floral & Event Design; Gary Merjian and his team at The St. Regis New York; our wonderful
volunteers around the globe;Afrika Tikkun’s Marketing and Development team in SouthAfrica, headed by
Onyi Nwanyeri; and Mehdeen Sehgal,Afrika Tikkun USA’s Marketing and DevelopmentAssociate.
We are truly blessed to be surrounded by brave supporters who live true to the words of the great Nelson
Mandela “... for to be free is not merely to cast off one’s own chains, but to live in a way that respects and
enhances the freedom of others.”
We hope that we can count on your continued support of our work to create a legacy of social and economic
empowerment that can radiate from SouthAfrica to our global community.
Thank you!

June Tatelman
June Tatelman is a true investor in community change, June Tatelman’s career in education and commitment to
philanthropy spans over 40 years. Finding ways to support HIV/AIDS infected individuals has been an especially
deeply personal mission for her.
In the early 1990s, her husband, Eliot, lost his older brother to AIDS. In response to this tragic loss, June, along
with her husband and their two sons, Josh and Michael, founded a Massachusetts-based family run non-profit
organization called Camp Miracles and Magic. For the last 17 years, children infected or affected by HIV/AIDS
have been able to spend one week at the camp each summer enjoying activities that build self-confidence, in an
atmosphere where they feel safe and free of the stigma of HIV/AIDS. Following her visit to South Africa 11 years
ago, June saw the need to extend these types of programs and services to its most marginalized populations. The
result is that through the support of the June and Eliot Tatelman Family Foundation, Afrika Tikkun has been able to
host summer camps that promote the psychosocial well-being of hundreds of marginalized young people and the
greater community.
June is also an educator by profession and over two decades she taught both elementary and middle school
students in the Sudbury, Massachusetts school system. June helped develop the K-8 Health Program curriculum
and introduced a Peer Mediation Program into the Middle School. After retiring, Ms. Tatelman became a Guardian
ad Litem in the Juvenile Court system of Suffolk County, Massachusetts. She has also worked as a counselor
for Planned Parenthood of Massachusetts and Preterm of Massachusetts. Her career and volunteer work have
focused on young people.
June’s husband, Eliot Tatelman, is President and CEO of leading furniture retailer Jordan’s Furniture. He is a
prominent advocate for advancing adoption awareness and serves on the Advisory Board of the MA Adoption
Resource Exchange (MARE). Giving back to community and philanthropy are a big part of his business philosophy
and Jordan’s Furniture has been active in hosting events, airing media campaigns, and donating funds for
adoption and foster care initiatives. Today, over 360 foster children have found permanent homes through the
Jordan’s Initiative.
June was raised in Valley Stream, New York and received her degree in Education from Boston University. She
has served on the Advisory Board of Afrika Tikkun USA for the last 10 years. In addition, June has served on the
Pathfinder International Board of Directors since 2008 and on the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center Board of

Patrick Sikhosana
My name is Patrick Kevin Sikhosana, I was born in Sebokeng, and I am
currently in grade 11 and live in Driziek. Life before Afrika Tikkun was just
ordinary and I had started to accept life as it was until one of my friends
convinced me to enroll in Afrika Tikkun’s Center. Joining Afrika Tikkun gave
me new hope and I soon realized that computers, life skills, library and arts
and culture interested me.AfrikaTikkun has given me access to the resources
that I never had before and has allowed me to participate in activities such as,
arts and culture, sports, computers, library, learning support etc.
Afrika Tikkun is keeping me busy and is preventing me from doing self-
destructive things like smoking, alcohol abuse, robbery, which might have dad
me end up in prison. I spend almost all my time at the Center, which assists
me with my school work as well as in polishing other skills that I am interested in. These creative skills include;
acting, dancing stage performance and cycling. The center has taught me to be a self-disciplined and respectful
young man. The Center has helped me to realize my inner passion for arts and sports. It has also allowed me to
maintain a good academic standing. In the future, I would like to start up my own business.
My plan B is to perhaps open up a center like Arekopaneng, where I will be catering and accommodating children
from different backgrounds and making a positive impact in their lives. I would like to thank theAfrika Tikkun Center
so much for all their contribution in my life. I am a better and wiser person today because of the guidance I got from
its facilitators. I would also like to convey my gratitude to the sponsors and the donors for making it possible for the
Centers to assist us and provide us with quality education and a more positive future.
Morongwa Ramasobane
I am Morongwa Pride Ramasobane, a 16-year-old female from the community
of Diepsloot. I was raised by my mother, a single parent, and I have two older
sisters. I am originally from a small rural area called Vergenoeg, GaMokopane
in Limpopo. Growing up without a father taught me to be responsible and
independent at a very young age. However, I lacked proper guidance to direct
me to the right path. Being a child from a township, I started believing that real
life was on the streets. Despite the challenges that I had faced, my teachers
showed faith in me. In the 10th grade I was selected to participate in Afrika
Tikkun’s Anti-Violence Buddies Program.
I have been motivated to become a well-known activist, a feminist and a human rights advocate. I also developed
passionforscienceinAfrikaTikkun’slibrary.Today,Iaspiretobecomeacivilengineerandopenmyownconstruction
company that would hire women and show them that being a woman is not a curse. I also want to establish more
centers like Afrika Tikkun as part of my company’s outreach to more disadvantaged communities. The leadership
skills that I developed, led me to participate in the Nelson Mandela’s children’s parliament and helped me to become
the chairperson of the CNOP as well as a child ambassador for the Gauteng province. All this I achieved through
the guidance of Afrika Tikkun and my own ability to persist and persevere. I am working on a few projects, which
will serve the community --including making a documentary on gender based violence, small boys talk groups,
advocating for facilities and bringing mobile clinics in schools. I am also planning to revive the will-way-road. I would
like to conclude by quoting Nelson Mandela’s words, “.... it always seems impossible until it’s done.”

Clayton Dube
I was raised by my uncle and his girlfriend in Pretoria, who cared for me until
I was 15 years old. At that time, my mother worked as a domestic worker
in Johannesburg and assisted my uncle with my school fees and also took
care of my other siblings. A year later, I returned to my Mother’s home but
she had lost her job and has been unemployed for 3 years now. With the
limited income of my father, my education was affected. Because of the
unpaid school fee, I started skipping school.
In this disturbed environment, it became difficult for me to concentrate on
my studies. In Johannesburg, I looked for a soccer team to play for and
was introduced to Afrika Tikkun. I was impressed by the facilities Afrika Tikkun offered at no cost. I finally was able
to devote time to my studies and access Afrika Tikkun’s library, computers and other resources. Through Afrika
Tikkun’s programs, I have been able to improve my academic and athletic performances. Currently, I am the
soccer captain at school, vice-captain at Afrika Tikkun and just last year, I was awarded the most-disciplined player
prize. Thank you Afrika Tikkun and the sponsors for making a difference in my life. Without you I don’t think I would
be the kind of person I am today. I am 19 years old now and studying in Grade 11. I plan to become a sound
engineer in order to build a better life for myself and my family.
Gabrielh Malama
I come from a family of two and was raised by a single parent. Before joining
Afrika Tikkun in January 2014, life was unpleasant for me and my family. I lost
my dad at a young age and my mother lost her job as a teacher during that
time.As a single parent, it was difficult for her to provide for the family.Through
part-time jobs, she struggled to put food on the table but continued to push us
to have a proper education. During that difficult time, I almost lost my mother
due to illness that affected her kidneys. I fell into depression.
My mother introduced me to Afrika Tikkun, which has helped me realize my
true potential, and made me into a confident and diligent person. I am now
in grade 12 and have been a representative council leader in my school. At
Afrika Tikkun I am an event organizer in a program called young urban women, which is sponsored by Action Aid.
This program has enhanced my ability to speak my mind and has given me information on unpaid care work, social
security, sexual reproductive health rights and decent work.
I plan to study administration at the University of Cape Town and become a logistics administrator. I am a young
innovative person that would love to run her own business in the future that sells different goods to foreign countries.
Afrika Tikkun has opened doors of opportunities for me. It made me believe that I can make a difference in and
contribute to my community. I am a true picture of a future leader of tomorrow.
