  6. 6. 6 Survey Spreadsheet for SplitterPro-X • If you conduct a paper and pen survey and use Excel as data entry this how survey data would look like. • For Splitter use, data should start at cells A1. • For first time running a survey data set, the data need to be on the front sheet. Click Splitter Pro X. Splitter Pro X data format: • Top row is for questions in the questionnaire • Each column contains answer for each question • Answer can be Text or ‘code’ or empty • Multiple value is allowed, separate by a comma “,” • Mixed text with code is allowed • In multiple answer, order is indifferent (a,b =b,a) • Long text as in open end question is accepted • Numeric value is accepted Sheet containing survey data on the front Splitter Pro X Add-Ins menu
  7. 7. 7 Splitter Pro-X Main Menu Overview Shortly after clicking a• window shows up Question : Todisplayand select question to run. Multiple selection will run all of the selectedquestions. This will be shown as tables downward, starting fromthe top most selectedquestion. Across : Toproduce, in addition to summary, the associated breakdownsusing the across variables (segments) selected. Grid : When using Question tab multiple selection will make series of tables go downward, on the other hand Grid tab will make multiple selection one table go level to the right. It is for showing in one table multiple questions having the samelabels. Filter : Toselect respondent criteria from which thetables arecreated (sub/parts of population) Numeric : To codenumeric data, create groups with selected criteria Coding : Coding functions to analyze text Search : To search data meeting selected criteria Output: The type of output want to be displayed in tables: count, percentage, average, standard deviation, significant test Diagnostic : Toidentifyerror ondataentryandedit. Set Up: To enter label for each code used in the questionnaire. • Sheet name containing survey data will be renamed to Form Response 1. • If you have additional data just add starting from the next row after the last data. • Changing the content of Form Response 1 sheet after the data is run will not have any effect. • Survey data will be saved in the Excel workbook. • While on Pro version when first time running on data set, Splitter do automatic coding (assigning number to text data) so that it can create tables, on Pro X we need to enter manually labels for each code. Labels are text, option answers in the questionnaire

  10. 10. 10 Set Up (2) • After entering labels, basically Splitter is ready to produce tables. • For survey with multiple choice questions only, whether it is single answer or multiple answers with no “other response” where respondents can write their own answer • In survey data it means all code numbers and no text • However if you have text for example because there are “other response” we need to code it first. Otherwise it would look like the illustration below • There are “Not Established” answers Text “Not Established” means Splitter can not read the data and from the survey data it may mean some text that needs to be coded or you miss adding some labels. Text Text Numeric For text answers in open end question it will be covered in Coding tab For numeric answers it will be covered in Numeric tab To “code” in Splitter it means assigning number to text data so that table can be created.
  11. 11. 11 Coding Coded textbox. Show a check sign if there is any uncodedtext. Click Here toCode Alltext With one click texts have beencoded. Click Here tocode selected text • Here example of uncoded text to be coded • Go to Coding tab, Click Code-All. • That is all you need to do to make uncoded text coded. Now all text have been coded and when run the tables again the “Not Established” part is gone Check this to show Uncoded textbox.

  13. 13. 13 Question Tab • Put your cursor anywhere in any sheet as long as not in Form Response 1. • Check on questions you want to make tables from. Click Run. Here we select questions to be across variables (segments) from which tables are created in addition to the total, ie cross-tabulation. The checked questions in Across tab will create cross-tabulation Click to confirm selection back to Question tab. To clear checked questions Showing the tables by Gender and Age as checked in Across tab Number of respondents for each segment Two tables producedas checked Question tab with same across variable.
  15. 15. 15 Grid Tab •Here we select a number questions to be shown horizontally as grid, instead of one by one downward. Splitter recognizes grid when a set of question have similar set of answer options These questions have same set of answer options (and in the same order) Click to produce tables onchecked questions To clear checked questions To clear checked questions and filter To exit Splitter Every checked question creates table to the right. Labels only shown once on the first checked question only.
  16. 16. 16 Filter Tab (1) • In the Filter tab, we specify the criteria (sub/parts of population) from which the tables are created. In a selected question for filter, check which one you will use for filter. If more than 1 is checked, that means “OR”.   18. 18. 18 Numeric Tab • In numeric tab, Splitter will code numeric value so tables can be created. • Can code integers, 0, minus, or fraction. The numbers should be free of units ($, km, kg, etc) or any sign (>5) or range (5-10). • The objective of coding numeric data is to create groups There are 3 columns in this box: respondent number, column1 content (Timestamp or respondent ID), and numeric data for each answering respondent.   20. 20. 20 Numeric Coding (2) Example The numeric data is now coded Applying filter to include only answering respondents Some notes: • If the numeric data not coded yet when try to run table, there will be message box to check numeric coding. • To create another coding criteria, just clear the code and set new criteria. • After coding, you can run the numeric data as Across or Filter variable. • If you set criteria non exclusively ( example x <5 and 1<x<10) then there will be chances that 1 response will be counted more than1. • If you save the workbook, the coding result will remain.

Coding Tab – Edit/Split/Add Tab • If answers for particular question contain text, it will show up on the left box, uncoded text. • To make uncode text coded, just hit button Code-All or Code Selection, the text will then move to the box on the right “Coded box”.   23. 23. 23 Adding Codes We can add new codes to existing codes from questionnaire. One case where adding codes is necessary is when we want to create header code for code resulting from combination/grouping. Toadd codes type in the box the text. Then click Add Now we have new code “South East Asia” for this question. In this case the code will be empty when we run the table but we have a plan to combine this code with other codes and act as aheader. Click view if you want to preview result first, then clickAdd.
  24. 24. 24 Coding - Combining and Excluding Codes Example Reorder code Highlight all codes you want to combine, and click Combine When combining code, the top code will be header Highlighting code will show components Combine header code with another code New code component Highlight a code that you want to exclude from components. Click Exclude Checking this will show components of a code in the table Run table for the question
  25. 25. 25 Coding – Open End Text Coding (1) Two methods of Coding Uncoded Text • Text has to be coded to create table. • Splitter identifies uncoded text in the Uncoded Text box, check show to display • Splitter has two coding method : Row coding and Label coding. • In Row coding you capture the whole content in the cell, while Label coding you capture the ‘label’ ie component of the content.   26. 26. 26 Coding – Open End Text Coding (2) Editing Uncoded Text in Row Coding to Get Full Context • In order to make proper editing we have to capture the whole cell content to understand the context, thus working in Row coding. • Highlight text and edit it in the editing box.   27. 27. 27 Editing Codes After Editing & Before Coding – Switch Uncoded Text to Label Coding – Then Code • In most cases you will want to select Label coding method to code open end text (after texts have been edited). It is as if you are working on a multiple answer question and try to separate its option answers through the use of comma as separator. • After editing, when you switch coding method to Label, you will see in uncoded box text already separated by content/label • Now you are basically ready to code text • You may want to check again, whether editing is still needed as the example below shows • Then click on Code-All to code all uncoded texts. Highlight thetext. Write down editedversion. If you want to split use comma between separate content. You can select to edit uncoded, sending backto the uncoded box or press edit/add to code directly. View to view the editing result. Here we choose directly to code by pressing edit/splitbutton. Look that previous codein uncoded box is nowgone. Click Code All – To code all text in uncoded box
  28. 28. 28 Search Tab • The search function is to view responses for respondents with certain criteria through filter. We can apply filters up to 10 level. Respondent ID Number Responses to particular question Applying filters

For question withnumeric data, whether to show average and standard deviation of the actual numeric value or itscode number To show standard deviation(of code number) Will show Top 1, Top2, Top 3 percentage. Usually for scaling where we are interested in combining responses. Survey Data Format in Excel for Splitter Analysis 63 • We choose a particular online survey platform for various reasons from its ease of use, attractive interface or access to respondents. • Often we want to have more on the analysis side, more in-depth analysis on crosstabulation and filter or analysis on open end results, the service that Splitter performs. • Splitter reads survey data in Excel in a format that is used by Google Forms • We need to export survey data to Excel or in a file that can be opened by Excel. • The issue is that often the format is different with that of Google Forms and therefore we need to modify first • However since the data is on Excel the modification is relatively easy to do

For multiple answer question, each answer in separate cells. • Therefore one question may need more than one column, depending on number of answers in multiple answer questions. • Survey data format as downloaded from Google Forms is simple: • First row is for question list, each column is for each question in the questionnaire • Starting from 2nd row onwards, every column contains answer from each respondent for each question • For multiple answer question, separate each answer by a comma “,” The main issue is on number of ‘answer’ in a cell. In Google Forms, one cell is for any number of answer (whether single or multiple answers – and to separate with comma in case of multiple), while in other format one cell should only contain one answer thus for multiple answer requires more cells.
