Overview of “The Employment Situation”
• The May report showed an overall
monthly gain of 280,000 jobs – exceeding
the average monthly numbers over the
past year
• The unemployment rate increased by
0.1%, to 5.5%
• Revisions to prior months:
- The March number was revised from +85,000 to
+119,000
- The April number was revised from +223,000 to
+221,000

Employment in May
• Total nonfarm payroll employment
decreased by 311,000 jobs to 2.4 million in
May, following an increase in the month of
April
- Unemployment rose slightly to 5.5%
- The number of long-term unemployed
persons (2.5 million) was little changed
in May, making up 28.6% of all
unemployed persons
- Over the year, the number of long-term
unemployed has declined by 849,000
• Discouraged workers in May was 563,000 –
a decrease of 134,000

State & Regional Unemployment – April 2015
• State and Regional unemployment rates were little changed in April
• The Midwest had the lowest regional unemployment rate at 5.0%
• The West had the highest unemployment rate at 5.8%
• Significant over-the-year decreases were reported in all four regions: Midwest, West,
Northeast and South
