Abloy Oy environmental review 2016

  1. 1. Abloy oy environmentAl review 2016
  2. 2. PRINCIPLES Highest quality = Long product life cycle = Smallest environmental impact
  3. 3. PRINCIPLES Highest quality = Long product life cycle = Smallest environmental impact Environmentally-sound production is a central consideration in our operational policies. Our development work on product durability and minimizing environmental impact are tightly linked - as high-quality products best suited to their intended use have a long service life, the environmental effects resulting from their manufacture occur less often. Our factory operations are controlled by environmental and chemical permits. Specific requirements include continuous monitoring and reporting and a risk- management system.
  4. 4. ENERGY MWh per manufactured tonne 7,0 2013 2014 2015 6,5 6,0
  5. 5. ENERGY The energy used in manufacturing each of our products has been reduced by more than 14 % in the last three years. In 2015, the total amount of electricity and district heat we consumed was over 4100 MWh less than in 2013. Energy saved corresponds to the annual energy needs of approximately 200 electrically-heated detached houses. MWh per manufactured tonne 7,0 2013 2014 2015 6,5 6,0
  6. 6. T ENERGY / targets FAVOURING LOW-CARBON ENERGY SOURCES In the summer of 2013, we switched to Savon Voima’s carbon neutral electricity generated using wind power, hydropower and biomass. –20176201
  7. 7. -5% TO REDUCE ENERGY CONSUMPTION IN 2016 BY AT LEAST 5 % COMPARED TO 2015 Producing compressed air currently accounts for 10 % of the electricity we use. By repairing leaks in compressed air equipment in a more systematic manner, we are significantly reducing our electricity consumption. We are also installing new lighting technology and paying attention to reducing the idle running of the machines.T ENERGY / targets –20176201
  8. 8. WATER CONSUMPTION m3 PER MANUFACTURED TONNE 5,6 2013 2014 2015 5,75,7
  9. 9. Treating metal surfaces requires water. The new surface-treatment technology we have introduced has enabled us to reduce the amount of water used per tonne of product manufactured by approximately 10 % since 2012. Effluent from surface treatment operations is cleaned in our own wastewater treatment plant before being transferred to the sewage system for further processing. WATER CONSUMPTION m3 PER MANUFACTURED TONNE 5,6 2013 2014 2015 5,75,7
  10. 10. waterconsumptionT CONSUMPTION / targets TO REDUCE WATER CONSUMPTION IN 2016 BY AT LEAST 1 % COMPARED TO 2015 LEVELS Water consumption can be reduced when more accurate information about actual usage is available. New water meters installed at the Abloy Joensuu factory in 2013 and 2015 are enabling us to monitor water consumption closely. Metering will be increasingly focused on different functions. –20176201

  12. 12. kg PER MANUFACTURED TONNE LANDFILLWASTE Waste sent to landfill has been reduced by 90 %. Compared to 2013, 8 kg less landfill waste is now being generated per tonne of ABLOY® products manufactured. More efficient reuse and recycling in 2015 resulted in 30 tonnes less waste being sent to landfill from our factories than in 2013. We deliver hazardous waste to Ekokem Oy for proper treatment. 9 9,2 2013 6, 0, 1 2014 2015
  13. 13. LANDFILLWASTE / TARGETS TO PRODUCE ZERO WASTE TO LANDFILL IN 2016 The amounts of landfill waste and hazardous waste we produce are being reduced through training, and by making it easier to sort waste inside our factories. Joensuu factory is landfill-free. We are aiming for landfill-free Abloy. –20176201
  14. 14. c emicals
  15. 15. c emicals Installed in 2010, our new surface- treatment facility at Joensuu is among the most advanced in terms of the safe use of chemicals. Surface treatment requires chemicals that can, if handled incorrectly, endanger health and the environment. We have chosen to replace surface-treatment chemicals with less-hazardous alternatives, and to make operation safer by renewing the equipment used when handling chemicals.
  16. 16. CHEMICALS / targets MAKING THE USE OF CHEMICALS SAFER Chemicals which are hazardous but essential to our processes are used as little as possible. Associated risks are minimized by the regular servicing of equipment, by providing personnel with continuous training, and through safety drills. –20176201
