World Hand Hygiene Day takes place on May 05, 2015. The day is declared by the World Health
Organization (WHO) and encoures patients and their family members to join health workers in their
efforts to practice good hand hygiene. According to WHO, every year, hundreds of millions of
patients around the world are affected by health care-associated infections. More than half of these
infections could be prevented by caregivers properly cleaning their hands at key moments in patient
care. However, this year is different. 2015 is the 10th anniversary of the WHO Clean Care is Safe
Care program.
INTRODUCTION
Hand hygiene is the act of cleaning ones hands with or
without the use of water or another liquid, or with the use of
soap, for the purpose of removing soil, dirt, and/or
microorganisms. The main medical purpose of washing hands
is to cleanse the hands of pathogens (including bacteria or
viruses) and chemicals which can cause personal harm or
disease.
Hand hygiene is especially important for people who handle
food or work in medical field and hospitality sectors .
10 FACTORS
After 10 years of the WHO Clean is Safer Care program, here
are 10 reasons why you should be part of it:
Hand hygiene at the right times saves lives.
Hand hygiene in health care has saved millions of lives in the last years.
Hand hygiene is a quality indicator of safe healthcare systems.
Health-care problems, like HAIs which are often invisible but nevertheless
still occur, are political and social challenges that we must address now.
Infections can be stopped through good hand hygiene, and patient and
health worker harm prevented for less than $10.
Affordable life-saving technology is available! Alcohol-based handrub,
which costs approximately $3 per bottle, can prevent HAI and millions of
deaths every year.
Hand hygiene exists in the media, which means it exists as an important
topic, whether due to HAI or outbreaks of deadly diseases like Ebola.
Embedding specific moments for hand hygiene action into health worker
workflow makes it easier to do the right thing every minute, every hour,
every day.
Infection prevention is at the heart of strengthening health-care systems.
Hand hygiene is core to all interventions, whether inserting an invasive
device, managing a surgical wound, or giving an injection.
The social epidemic has already begun to spread with SAVE LIVES: Clean
Your Hands, a successful global campaign promoting hand hygiene action
at the point of patient care.

WHY?
• Thousands of people die every day around the world from infections acquired while receiving
health care.
• Hands are the main pathways of germ transmission during health care.
• Hand hygiene is therefore the most important measure to avoid the transmission of harmful germs
and prevent health care-associated infections.
HOW?
• Clean your hands by rubbing them with an alcohol-based formulation, as the preferred mean for
routine hygienic hand antisepsis if hands are not visibly soiled. It is faster, more effective, and better
tolerated by your hands than washing with soap and water.
• Wash your hands with soap and water when hands are visibly dirty or visibly soiled with blood or
other body fluids or after using the toilet.
• If exposure to potential spore-forming pathogens is strongly suspected or proven, including
outbreaks of Clostridium difficile, hand washing with soap and water is the preferred means.

The theme emphasizes the importance of
hand hygiene action in demonstrating
overall quality of care within health-care
facilities (WHO, 2015).
This year the WHO is calling for
healthcare facilities to “Take this
opportunity to show your colleagues, your
country and the world what a strong
quality indicator of care hand hygiene is”
and to “Take the opportunity to
commemorate all that has happened
around the world over these last 10
years”.

Clean hands save lives.
That’s the important message the World Health Organization is sending worldwide May 5 during
World Hand Hygiene Day. Clean hands prevent infection and stop illnesses cold at home, school,
restaurants and work. In health care facilities, good hand hygiene is essential to saving lives.
From Boston to Bangladesh to Beijing; from Cedar Rapids to San Antonio to Sydney; from Montreal
to Mexico City to Morocco; the theme of Hand Hygiene Day 2015 is being spread.
