3. Research
This first type of research I did was look up existing products and analyse them in terms of what I liked and disliked about what they used in
the products such as techniques and use of location, props, character and lighting. The result of doing this allowed me to explore different
techniques and how existing products make their films different to others. It also helped me see what assets were missing in their productions
which I could use to make my production different to existing products.
The second type of research I did was research techniques that I could possibly use for my short film. With this I explored different
techniques, wrote about how to execute the technique and what effect it would have on the product. The result of this type of research is
that it expanded my knowledge on techniques and methods on production. It also helped me execute other elements of production which I
already knew in a better way and it helped me understand how to make my production unique by using a variety of techniques that other
products haven't used.
The third type of research I did was an audience research. In this secondary research I did a questionnaire and interviews to find out more
about what I could do with my project. The result of this was that I got to learn about my target audience and what they liked in a short
film. it also showed me what people don’t like about short films so I could avoid those in order to give them what they want.
These techniques of research have helped me because I've gathered my audiences opinions on certain aspects about films and I have also
made my own opinions about different techniques. Its given me a better view on what I want to use in my short film and what can be left out.
Another reason why this has helped me is that I've learned new techniques which I wanted to try out to see if they would look good for my
short film.
For this research task I have used a range of sources to find out more information about short films. One of those sources was Youtube.com.
This video sharing website has allowed me to watch all the short films which I have analysed in the research task. YouTube also allows users
to write comments about the content so I could also see what other people thought about the short film and if they liked it or not. The
internet was also a good source to look a ratings of films of the same genre of my product.
What I think went well in my research was that I used a variety of films to analyse for the existing products. Using a great range of films which
have different concepts and techniques has broadened my knowledge about film and the work that goes into it to make it great. I have
researched a lot of techniques which I could possibly use in my product. This will enhance the technical quality of my short film and I feel like I
did well with researching and analysing the techniques which I gathered in the research document.
For what I could of done better, I could of researched specific elements. Some of these elements being framing, audio and title sequences. I
did do some audio research but didn’t go into detail about specific techniques that I could of possibly used.
4. Planning
What I did for the production was plan what I was going to do. I planned out many things such as techniques and
content of shots in order to be more organised on the day of shooting the film and the days where I was going to edit
for the short film.
I also practised techniques which I could use for my production. I filmed some simple shots and applied the effects I
found when doing research. I have used colour grading and split effects and messed around with some transitions.
I used many things to help me with my planning. One thing that I did was mind maps. Mind maps are a group of ideas
and thoughts designed in bubbles connected to each other with lines. I used a mind map to gather my ideas about
what I could do for my final project and details about it such as location, plot, costume ideas etc.
Another thing I did was that I created a mood board. A mood board is a collection of images which can be a wide range
of things such as ideas for props, dvd covers and posters of existing movies that are similar to the product that I have
done and locations. This mood board inspired me as to what kind of assets were going to be included in my film.
When I planned out the final concept of my product, I used a shot list. A shot list is listing all the shots that you are
going to use in the short film and explain what type of shot it is and what is going to be in the shot such as props,
characters, dialogue, effects and transitions etc.
The last thing that I did to plan my production was the story board. I story board is a collection of drawings with
annotations of all the shots that you are going to use in the product. A story board is like a visual version of the written
shot list. It also gives you and the actors a bigger idea of what and where things need to be placed.
I felt that the sources I used to plan my work were helpful because it helped me keep on track with what the
production needed. The shot list and story board were very useful as it broke down each shot showing what assets
needed to be included.
What I found that went well was the shot list and the story board. I feel like creative and visual planning work better for
me than written plans and the use of the storyboard was very helpful for me.
What I think I could do better is that I could of explored with more images on the mood board. The images I have
collected look similar and don’t have variety which I could of prevented by thinking of more ideas for my product
5. Time Management
In my proposal I created a gridded schedule to help me keep on track with the
work I had to complete during the course. However I didn’t stick to this schedule
because aspects of the work such as the production reflection and the evaluation
documents took longer than I expected them to.
The filming for the video production was completed on time so I didn’t have to
book out the equipment for more time than I intended to film.
Due to my filming finishing on time, I had a lot of time to edit my video. This
benefited me as I could go into detail with the editing and make sure everything
was clean and at a good quality.
The majority of the written work was completed on time. However the
production reflection and the evaluation took longer than it should have, as I find
the evaluation process the hardest task.
If I had more time I would work more on my production reflection and added
more detail and more slides which shows all the changes I made.
To organise my project better I would of made sure to stick to the schedule. I
would of done this by printing out the schedule and making a to do list so I could
stay organised and see what is needed to be done.
6. Technical Qualities
What is similar to my product and this product is that they both have a similar plot.
Both products use an evil being or entity that communicates or appears through a
reflection or a camera. Both beings show themselves in the real world at the end of
the short film. What is different about the two products is that the two have different
color schemes. In my product I used color grading to make the colors seem darker .
The existing product doesn’t use any color grading and uses the natural light sourced
from lamps and windows. There is also a difference with the use of techniques in both
mine and the existing product. I have used a few techniques such as color grading,
split screen and a range of transitions between visual and audio assets. The existing
product does not use a lot of techniques and would have been better if they used
them. However the product may have benefited with a small range of techniques so
the short film would stay simple and clean and wouldn’t have dodgy transitions or
effects. My short film also had more audio assets compared to the short film pre
existing product. The pre existing product used the audio that was recorded during
the filming but I had collected and created soundtracks, dialogue and other audio that
wasn’t sourced from the video assets to make mine more dramatic and clear.

7. Aesthetic Qualities
I think that the product is creative because I took the
concept and made it different to the short films that
are similar or that inspired me to do this product. I
used the split screen technique twice in the short film
and I felt like the technique was used well both times.
There are no harsh lines where the two shots meet
and the effect of it looks good. I also liked how the
color grading went as it added some dark tones to
the look of the film as a whole. Before I was using the
natural lighting which was whites, yellows and
oranges coming from the lamps and the natural light
coming through the window. But I added hints of blue
and green to darken the image and give off a cooler
vibe rather than a warm vibe. If I were to change
anything in the short film it would be the title card
and credits. If I were to improve the title card I would
change the color of the text. The color is red which
doesn’t have any correlation to the rest of the short
film as the color gradient of the short films are blues
and hints of green. I would of done something with
the background of the title card as the background is
a simple black color which isn't interesting for the
viewer.
8. Audience Appeal
My audience are teenagers and young adults with the main gender target is females.
My short film is aimed at the social grades from class B and below and the
psychographic for the audience would be an explorer.
I think my product suits my audience because I fit in many assets that would suit all of
the people that go under all the aspects I have listed. It suits teenagers and young
adults because the main character is a teenager and one of the locations that the film
is set is in a college which is relatable for most teenagers. I chose to aim my product
for females. The product I have created is appropriate for this gender. The two main
characters are female and they are seen doing stereotypical female things such as
brushing their hair and putting on lipstick. I put my NRS social grade as B and below
because all these people would have the time and would be able to view this short
film. My product suited the psychographic as the explorer and the film brought a new
aspect to supernatural horror films which is the use of evil twins and mirrors.
The questionnaire that I carried out to find who the audience are was very helpful for
the production as I knew what aspects and stereotypes I could put into my film to
attract that certain audience.
10. Feedback 1
• What did you like about the product?
The music is very fitting to the vibe given by the scene.
There are some very smooth transitions between shots that
give the scenes more life.
The camera effects both purposefully and accidently make the
scenes more darker and intense.
• What improvements could have been made to the
product?
The panning of the camera is sometimes a bit sticky rather
than smooth towards the beginning.
Some of the dialogue cannot be heard as well because the
background noise is too much.
11. Feedback 2
• What did you like about the product?
• I liked the concept of the film having an evil doppelganger through the mirror and I also liked the
used on contrast in the clothing, using lighter and darker colours as a representation of the
characters, I also liked the camera blur that takes places in certain parts of the film as it creates a
sense of disorientation, the lack of jumps scares throughout the film was also a good choice as true
horror is built through suspense.
• What improvements could have been made to
the product?
• I think that there could've been a greater use of audio throughout the film to help build the
suspense, it is used at the beginning but it sort of cuts out part way through the film, there is also a
shot towards the end of the film with the antagonist brushing their hair that I think went on for a
little too long and could be cut down slightly.
12. Feedback 3
• What did you like about the product?
I like the visuals as they fit the eerie atmosphere.
Music and sound effects compliment the production well.
The cinematography is nice for most of the time (Sometimes it can look a
little amateur which is understandable).
Visual effects are well done and add to the atmosphere of the film.
• What improvements could have been made to
the product?
Re-filming parts which were initially shaky.
Some shots go on for longer than they should so cutting them down could
improve the overall production.
13. Peer Feedback Summary
I agree with some of what the feedback has said.
There are a couple of mentions of using better
audio to improve my work which is understandable
and makes sense because some of the audio is
jumpy and doesn’t use a good transition in order
for it to be smoother.
What I disagree on with the feedback is when they
say that I could of reshot some scenes as they were
too shaky. I disagree with this as all shots were
smooth and if a shot was shaky then it was done
deliberately.
