A pilot study on the awareness among pregnant women in undergoing dental procedure during pregnancy.

2.  Pregnancy is the most revered part of a woman’s life.
 A pregnant woman is not considered medically
compromised but requires a unique set of medical
treatments.
 Hormonal changes during pregnancy can affect the entire
system including oral cavity.
 Pregnant women must be able to distinguish between the
common changes noticed during pregnancy from the
abnormal ones.

4.  Organogenesis – the formation of various organ
systems occurs in the first 3 months of gestation.
 This is a very crucial period in the development of
fetus.
 The fetus is most susceptible to
malformations in this period.
 Hence any kind of teratogens must be avoided.

5.  Majority of organogenesis is complete.
 Maturation of fetus takes place during this
trimester.
 It is a safer period for carrying out essential
dental procedures.
 There will be lesser chances of malformation
due to teratogens.

6.  The uterus expands due to the growing
placenta and fetus.
 The fetus directly rests on Inferior vena cava
and aorta resulting in supine hypotensive
syndrome.
 Hence long procedures should be avoided
and short procedures can be done in left
lateral position.

9. OBJECTIVE : A random survey was done to evaluate the
knowledge and practices pertaining to
oral health among women of various social
strata.
CRITERIA: Pregnant women/Lactating women/
Recent mothers of 20 – 35yrs of age.
SAMPLE SIZE : A total of 72 samples were surveyed out
of which 55 were qualified based on the
criteria.
AVERAGE AGE : The average age was 26 years with a
least age being 20 and maximum
being 34 .

14.  Over 75% of the women find it unnecessary to
have a dental check up after conception to
correct any dental problems.
 Only 24 % of women are ready to consult a
dentist do undergo a dental procedure in case
of emergency while the rest seek their own
home remedies.
 About 65 % women are unaware of the risks of
undergoing any treatment or exposure to
radiations and drugs during pregnancy.
 The hour has come to awaken the society by
creating awareness regarding the pros and
cons of any dental treatment during pregnancy.

16.  Study of Medical history of patient

 Contacting the patient’s Obstetrician for discussing
 The medical status
 Dental needs

17.  Any emergency procedures must be done in the
second trimester and must be kept short .
 Best chair position is sitting up or left lateral
position with the head elevated in the chair.
 Dental radiographs must be avoided, if necessary
can be taken during second trimester.
 Prescription of drugs must be according to FDA.

18.  X-Rays must be avoided during pregnancy.
 Only selective and necessary radiographs must be
taken preferably during second trimester.
 Safety measures:
 Fast exposure techniques (E speed film)
 Mandibular radiographs are
more safe.
 Rectangular Collimation
 Lead aprons must be worn

19. • Coronal scaling, polishing and root planing
may be performed at any time as required to
maintain oral health.
• Filling can be done in the second and third
trimester of pregnancy.
• Extensive elective procedures should be
postponed until after delivery.
• Any treatment should be directed toward
maintaining a healthy oral environment and
preventing potential problems that could
occur later in the pregnancy.

25. TO END WITH…
• Treatment of the pregnant patient has the potential
of affecting the lives of two individuals (the mother
and the unborn fetus).
• Pregnant women tend to over estimate the risk of
teratogenicity in the fetus that restrains them from
consulting a dentist.
• Every woman must have the cognizance about the
potential risks during pregnancy.
• We the DENTISTS have to take up the responsibility
of propagating the awareness about Oral Hygiene to
the society
