The Ministry of Urban Development was established in 1970 to develop slum families in Tamil Nadu and has since been renamed. It is now called the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs and is led by Cabinet Minister Hardeep Singh Puri. The ministry oversees around 3,700 local bodies across India, including municipalities, municipal corporations, and town panchayats. It implements several key schemes focused on urban development, such as AMRUT, PMAY, Smart Cities Mission, Swachh Bharat Mission, and HRIDAY.
