  • Hari Om!

Las Fallas is one of the most unique and crazy festivals in Spain. Spain is a country known for its unique and odd fiestas. It started as a feast day for St. Joseph, the patron saint of carpenters, and has evolved into a 5-day, multifaceted celebration involving fire. Las Fallas literally means 'the fires' in Valencia. Valencia is a quiet city with a population of just over 1 million but it swells to an estimated three million flame-loving revelers during Las Fallas celebrations.

The focus of the fiesta is also the creation and destruction of ninots (“puppets” or “dolls”), which are huge cardboard, wood, paper-machè and plaster statues.

There are two basic symbolic attractions of the fiestas one is worship of fire (celebration with fire is considered to be worship of fire) and the other is destruction of puppets / dolls.

The fire has remained the important part of daily life of humans since early age. Making fire to generate heat and light made it possible for people to cook food, increasing the variety and availability of nutrients. The heat produced would also help people stay warm in cold weather, enabling them to live in cooler climates. Fire was also used to keep nocturnal predators at bay.

The civilization all over world used to worship fire.

In Roman Times Vesta was worshipped as the goddess of the sacred fires of the hearth, the heart of spiritual and emotional stability in our home. Her cult goes back to the 7th century BC.

In Christians in Gospel as recorded by Luke Lord Jesus has said that 'I’ve come to bring fire on earth.' He has used the word “Holy Ghost fire”

Hindus worship fire as “Agni”. In Hindi language fire is called as “Agni”

The whole world including us is made of five elements i.e Space, Air, Water, Fire and Earth. Fire the “Agni” is one of the important element.

According to vedas (The Holy Book of Hindus) in the first part of creation space was created. Then Air was created, then water was created, after that Fire was created and finally earth was created. All these elements have their nature / qualities. The Space relates to hearing. Space can be heard only. There is a sound in space. Air relates both to hearing and touch. We can hear its sound and also feel it by touch. Fire relates to hearing, touch and form. We can hear its sound, feel it by touch and we can also see its form. Water relates to hearing, touch, form and taste. We can hear the sound of water, feel it by touch, see its form and also can taste it. Earth relates to all five i.e hearing, touch, form, taste and scent. We can hear the sound of earth, feel it by touch , can see its form, can taste it and can also scent it.

All the qualities in our body i.e hearing, touch, form, taste and scent have its genesis to five elements. Fire is important. Our body has two types of fire called ‘Jathara Agni’ and ‘Bhuta Agni’. Jathara Agni is digestive fire. It is incharge of physical digestion. Bhuta Agni is ethereal fire and Incharge of mental digestion. By pranayama, yog and mediation, we can develop qualities in us, which can help us in recognising both the fire in our body. For making our mind more subtle, we have to increase Bhuta Agni in our body and has to decrease Jathara Agni. Proper balance diet and food which can be easily digested is required to save Jathara Agni , so that energy is diverted to increase / develop Bhuta Agni. Increase in Bhuta Agni will make our mind more subtle. Only subtle mind can understand the subtle truth of life.

The second basic symbolic attractions of the “Las Fallas” is creation and destruction of puppets / dolls. In hindus also we make a statue of god with the help of mud. Worship it for two days. The next day in the evening we destroy it by immersing it in water. If we explore our life deep and observe the day to day working and items required for it, we can understand the basic truth that whatever was created will get destroyed. Whatever remains permanent was never created. We are part of creation. Accordingly the destruction / death is the imminent truth till we consider ourself as body.

The “Las Fallas” celebration gives us a great message of controlling the fire and understanding the truth of destruction of this body. This will lead us to the ultimate truth.

    Love and Om!
