Task 8 and 9 results analysis
1. As Media: Task 8/9 Feedback Analysis
After conducting both a quantitative questionnaire and a qualitative focus group, I was able to identify a
specific target audience for my pop music magazine.
Taking the results from my questionnaire based on the pop genre, more females compared to males were
interested in the prospect of a new pop magazine; this means that when I create my magazine I will be aiming
it at a female audience. Aside from this, with both genders the most popular target age from the results
questionnaire was 15-16 year olds who knew ‘a reasonable amount’ about the genre and, the most common
price people opted for was ‘£1-£1.50’ closely followed by ‘£2-£2.50’. Therefore, I wouldn’t go over these prices
for my magazine as no-one would buy it otherwise. From the 20 people asked in the quantitative
questionnaire, in terms of their favourite part of music magazines the most popular choice was interviews and
the last features; this shows that in my magazine, interviews will be a crucial factor in appealing to the target
audience. To appeal to the target audience further, the results showed that most people wanted a maximum
of 3 -4 interviews in the music magazine which will now become my target. The most popular colour schemes
were yellow and pink or red, black and white.
Utilizing the results from the qualitative focus group that fitted into my target audience of aged 15-16 girls, I
was able to define the information they wanted on a pop music magazine further. I discovered that in terms of
content they wanted gossip, interviews and the latest music news and, they’d prefer the magazine to be more
image based because it makes the magazine ‘more eye catching’ which ‘makes us want to actually want to
read the text’. They wanted an informal mode of address because it’s ‘easier/quicker to read’ and slang is
more appealing to them; when creating my magazine this is the mode of address I will be going for. On the
front cover, they want the cover lines to be about pop news and artists, particularly Rihanna, Pixie Lott,
LMFAO, JLS, One Direction, Justin Bieber and Jessie J. They said they were interested in pop ‘because the
videos are very energetic and bright’ which along with the ‘upbeat sound, puts you in a good mood’; this ties
nicely into the colours scheme. I will be picking ‘bright’ colours in order to reinforce the reason why the target
audience likes the pop genre and to make it ‘stand out’ and look ‘fun’.
