A systematic approach is outlined for cytopathology diagnosis. First, gather all available patient data. Second, determine if the sample is adequate and if the microscopic elements are compatible with expected findings based on the lesion's location. Finally, characterize the sample considering morphology and any additional assays, commenting on whether it is neoplastic, benign, malignant primary or secondary, or a non-neoplastic abnormality.
