most exalted (Khuluq) disposition.”

“The Believers men and women, are (AWLIYA’) protectors one of another: they
enjoin what is just, and forbid what is evil: they observe regular prayers
(swolah), practice regular charity (zakah), and obey Allah and His Messenger.
On them will Allah pour His mercy: for Allah is Exalted in power, Wise.”
(Qur’an: Taubah: 9: 71)
)

"But seek, with the (wealth) which Allah has bestowed on thee,
the Home of the Hereafter, nor forget thy portion in this world:
but do thou good, as Allah has been good to thee , and seek not
(occasions for) mischief in the land: for Allah loves not those who
do mischief."
(Qur’an: Qasas: 28: 77)
)

“ Worship Allah and associate nothing with Him, and to
parents do good, and to relatives, orphans, the needy,
the near neighbour, the neighbour farther away, the
companion at your side, the traveller, and those whom
your right hands possess. Indeed, Allah does not like
those who are self-deluding and boastful..”
(Qur’an: An-Nisa’: 4: 36)

)

“ The alms are only for the poor and the needy, and those who collect
them, and those whose hearts are to be reconciled, and to free the
captives and the debtors, and for the cause of Allah, and (for) the
wayfarer; a duty imposed by Allah. Allah is Knower, Wise.”
(Qur’an: Taubah: 9: 60)
)

“Thus, as for him who (A’-TWA) gives [to others] and is
(TAQAA) conscious of Allah, and (SWOD-DAQA BIL-HUSNA)
believes in the truth of the ultimate good for him shall We
make easy the path towards [ultimate] ease. But as for him
who is niggardly, and thinks that he is self-sufficient, and
(KADZ-DZABA BIL-HUSNA) calls the ultimate good a lie – for
him shall We make easy the path towards hardship:”
(Qur’an: Layl : 93: 5-11)

“ If anyone undertakes that duty therein let there be no obscenity nor
wickedness nor wrangling in the Hajj (PILGRIMAGE). And whatever
good ye do (be sure) Allah knows it. And take a provision (with you)
for the journey, but the best of provisions is right conduct ( TAQWA).
So be conscious of (and fear) Me, O ye that are wise.!”
(Qur’an : Baqarah: 2 : 197)
)

“The head of the matter is Al-Islam; its pillar is the
(obligatory) prayer i.e. Swolah; and its highest pinnacle is
Jihad (striving with utmost) in the way of Allah.”
(Hadith reported by Muslim)

LESSONS FROM THE ‘HAJJ’

”Ye have indeed in the Messenger of Allah (Prophet
Muhammad s.a.w.) a beautiful pattern (of conduct) for
anyone whose hope is in Allah and the Final Day, and who
engages much in the praise of Allah. “
(Qur’an: al-Ahzab: 33: 21)

)

”And thou (O Muhammad, standest) on an
exalted standard of character (disposition).”
(Qur’an: al-Qalam: 68: 4)

)

(When) ‘A-isha r.a. was asked as to the Prophet’s
s.a.a.w. disposition (akhlaq) she replied:
“(His nature or disposition) is the Qur’an”.
(Hadith narrated by Abu Dawud and Muslim)

As students who have understood that development of a noble
disposition (ahklaaqul-Karimah) requires effort at self purification, we
are to seek Guidance from the Qur’an and to emulate the Path taken
by the Prophet s.a.w. and the “Salafusw-swolih” (the early righteous
pioneer).
They were the ones whom Allah referred to as “ Khayra-Ummah”
the best of people whom our Prophet Muhammad s.a.w . trained and
developed.

)

We always ask Allah s.w.t. to show us the path of those whom He
has showered Blessings and favours, when we recite the Fatiha in our
prayers.
This respond to this supplication is already in the Holy Qur’an.
What is left for us to do is to strive to follow them.

)

“BE CONSTANT in [thy] prayer from the time when the
sun has passed its zenith till the darkness of night, and
[be ever mindful of its] recitation at dawn: for, behold,
the recitation [of prayer] at dawn is indeed witnessed
[by all that is holy].”
(Qur’an: al-Isra’: 17: 78)
)

“And rise from thy sleep and pray during part of the
night [as well], as a free offering from thee, and thy
Sustainer may well raise thee to a glorious station [in
the life to come].”

)

“And say [in thy prayer]: "O my Sustainer! Cause me to enter [upon
whatever I may do] in a manner true and sincere, and cause me to
leave [it] in a manner true and sincere, and grant me, out of Thy
grace, sustaining strength!”
)

“THUS, step by step, We bestow from on high through this
Qur'an all that gives health [a healing to the spirit] and is a
grace (Mercy) unto those who believe [in Us], the while it
only adds to the ruin of evildoers: for [it often happens that]
when We bestow Our blessings upon man, he turns away
and arrogantly keeps aloof [from any thought of Us]; and
when evil fortune touches him, he abandons all hope.”
(Qur’an: al-Isra’: 17: 82-83)

)

“Whenever any one of you wish to speak (converse) with
His Robb (Lord Sustainer), let him read the Qur’an”
(Hadith reported by Dailamy and Baihaqy)

)

“Whoever recites one letter from the Book of Allah (al-Qur’an)
will be rewarded with one Hasanah (merit), the merit then
would be multiplied by ten (Hasanah)”
(Hadith reported by Dailamy and Baihaqy)

)

“Verily, by this Book (al-Qur’an) Allah elevates (the ranks of) a people
(honouring them) and (by it too He) lowers (the ranks of) others”
(Hadith reported by Muslim)

)

“THIS, verily, is a reminder (TADZKIRAH): let him who wills, then
set out on a way to his Sustainer (SABIL ILA ROBB)!
BEHOLD, [O Prophet,] thy Sustainer knows that thou keepest
awake [in prayer] nearly two-thirds of the night, or one-half of
it, or a third of it, together with some of those who follow thee.”
(Qur’an: Muzzammil: 73: 19-20)
)

“And Allah who determines the measure of night
and day, is aware that you would never be able to
do it (all): and therefore He turns towards you in
His grace (forgiveness).”
(Qur’an: Muzzammil: 73: 20)

)

“Recite, then, as much of the Qur’an as you may do with
ease. He knows that in time there will be among you sick
people, and others who will go about the land in search of
Allah's bounty, and others who will fight in Allah’s cause.”
)

“Recite, then, [only] as much of it as you may do with ease ,
and be constant in prayer, and spend in charity, and [thus]
lend unto Allah a goodly loan: for whatever good deed you
may offer up in your own behalf, you shall truly find it with
Allah - yea, better, and richer in reward. And [always] seek
Allah's forgiveness: behold, Allah is much-forgiving, a
dispenser of grace!”

)

“O MANKIND! There has now come unto you an admonition
(MAU-’IZAH) from your Sustainer, and a (SHIFA’) cure for all
[the ill] that may be in men's hearts, and (HUDA) guidance
and (RAHMAH) grace unto all who believe [in Him].
Say: "In [this] bounty of Allah and in His grace -in this, then,
let them rejoice: it is better than all [the worldly wealth] that
they may amass!”
(Qur’an: Yunus: 10: 57-58)

)

“And unto thee [O Prophet] have We vouchsafed
this divine writ, setting forth the truth, confirming
the truth of whatever there still remains of earlier
revelations and determining what is true therein .”
(Qur’an: Maa-idah: 5: 48)

)

“Judge, then, between the followers of earlier revelation in
accordance with what Allah has bestowed from on high,
and do not follow their errant views, forsaking the truth
that has come unto thee. Unto every one of you have We
appointed a [different] law and way of life.”
)

“And if Allah had so willed, He could surely have made you all one single
community: but [He willed it otherwise] in order to test you by means of
what He has vouchsafed unto, you. Vie, then, with one another in doing
good works! Unto Allah you all must return; and then He will make you
truly understand all that on which you were wont to differ.”
)

The Qur’an is one of the most precious gifts from Allah to us and
is easily available. Yet, its true benefits evades us. The attitude of
“gratefulness ” mentioned in earlier lessons must be developed and
applied by us regarding the Qur’an.
If we realise that our spiritual health is in need of healing, then
look not elsewhere, but reflect upon and heed the message in the
Qur’an.

)

“Indeed, it is a noble Qur'an. In a Register well-protected;
None touch it except the purified. [It is] a revelation from the
Lord of the worlds.”
(Qur’an: Waqi-’ah: 56: 77-80)

)

This Qur’an being “ Kitaa-bullah ” (the book of Allah), must be
approached unlike any other book.
It is sad that we Muslims sometimes do not even know that there
are ADAB concerning how we are to approach the Qur’an. Thus the lack
of these adab only obstruct us from its benefits.
We are to be aware of the value of the Qur’an.

)

Condition of the recite:
purity, politeness and quietness, facing the Qiblah
Amount to be recited – not forgetting to ensure understanding
what is being recited. Although you may not know Arabic, today
there are translations available (admittedly translation may not be
perfect, yet it can give some understanding of the meaning of the
Qur’an).
Recite it in slow and distinct manner (tartil) - middle toneTajwid, makhraj, qalqalah, etc - beautify it melodiously.

To weep while reading the Quran
Fulfil the right (Haqq) of the verses recited :
eg. Saida (prostration), du’a (supplication), ta’awuz (seeking
protection of Allah), appropriate responses, etc..

“So when you recite the Qur'an, [first] seek refuge in Allah
from Satan, the expelled [from His mercy].”
(Qur’an: An-Nahlu: 16: 98)

)

“Indeed, there is for him no authority over (MU’-MINEEN)
those who have attained to faith and rely upon, by putting
their trust in their Lord (MUTAWAK-KILEEN).
His (satan) authority is only over those who take him as an
ally and those who through him associate others with Allah
(MUSH-RIKEEN).”
(Qur’an: An-Nahlu: 16: 99-100)
)

Begin with:

“ A-’uu-dzu - bil-laa - his – sa-mii- ’il – ‘aleem,
mi-nash – shay - twaa – nir – ra - jeem
I seek refuge with Allah Who hears and knows all,
from the accursed Satan.

Ending with:

“ swa – da – qal - laah – hul - ’a-zeem”
Allah the Most Esteemed has spoken the Truth
)

ALLAA-HUM-MAR – HAM-NI - BIL – QUR- ‘AA-N
WAJ- ‘AL – HU – LEE – IMAA-MAN - WA – NUU – RAN –
WA – HU-DAN WA RAH - MAH
“O Allah! Bestow mercy upon me through the Quran and
make it for me a leader (leading to Truth), a light, a Guide,
and a Mercy. O Allah! “
)

ALLAA-HUM-MA – DZAK – KIR – NEE – MIN-HU-MAA
NA –SEE –TU – WA – ‘AL –LIM – NEE
MIN – HU-MAA - JA – HIL -TU
“Remind me of that which I have forgotten, teach me those
(parts of the Quran) of which I am ignorant,”

)

WAR – ZUQ – NEE – TI – LAA – WA - TA – HU
AA – NA – AL – LAI – LI - WA – ATW
TRAA – FA - AN - NA - HAAR
“Grant me (ability for) Its recitation in the hours of the night
and different parts of the day,”

)

WAJ – ‘AL – HU – LEE – HUJ – JA-TAN
YAA – ROB – BAL – ‘AA – LA – MEE-N

“And make it as argument point in my favour,
O Lord of all the worlds.”

)

“The best amongst you is one who learns the Qur’an
and who teaches it”
(Hadith reported by Bukhary)

)

“Those who are proficient in reciting the Qur’an will be
amongst the ranks noble of angels in servitude;
And as for those still struggling (to learn) with difficulty reciting
will receive double (the reward).”
(Hadith reported by Bukhary and Muslim)
)

Some merely regard the mere verbalising from the Qur’an as
enough but does not go further into making efforts to understanding
the message and implementing it. Allah admonishes us:

“Then do they not reflect upon the Qur'an, or
are there locks upon [their] hearts?”
(Qur’an: Muhammad: 47: 24)

)

“Whosoever speaks (elaborates) upon the Qur’an
without knowledge, let him prepare to be placed in Hell”
(Hadith reported by Bukhary)

)

“Whosoever speaks (interprets) from the book of Allah
relying only upon his thoughts (own personal opinion),
and even if (the interpretation is) correct,
he has committed a wrong”
(Hadith reported by Ahmad)

)

“Indeed, those who reverted back [to disbelief] after
guidance had become clear to them - Satan enticed them
and prolonged hope for them.”

)

“That is because they said to those who disliked what
Allah sent down, "We will obey you in part of the
matter." And Allah knows what they conceal.”

)

“Then how [will it be] when the angels take them in death, striking
their faces and their backs? That is because they followed what
angered Allah and disliked [what earns] His pleasure, so He
rendered worthless their deeds.”
)

“Or do those in whose hearts is disease think that Allah would never
expose their [feelings of] hatred?”

)

“So when the Qur'an is recited, then listen to it and pay attention that
you may receive mercy.”
(Qur’an: A’-raf: 7: 204)

)

“And remember your Lord within yourself in humility and in fear,
without being apparent in speech - in the mornings and the evenings.
And do not be among the heedless.”
(Qur’an: A’-raf: 7: 205)

)

“Indeed, those who are near your Lord are not prevented by
arrogance from His worship, and they exalt Him, and to Him
they prostrate.”
(Qur’an: A’-raf: 7: 205)

)
