INDONESIA IN THE MAKING
ven as the world experiences economic downturns, Indonesia’s economy has continued to grow in recent years, reaching 6.5 percent in
2012, ahead of neighboring Malaysia at 3.7 percent and Singapore at 1.2 percent. Indonesia has become one of Asia Pacific’s most vibrant
democracies, a confident middle-income country, according to the World Bank. Nevertheless, the country still needs to realize its full potential
and overcome setbacks such as poverty, unemployment, substandard education and issues related to women’s welfare.
Data from Central Statistics Bureau show that about 12 percent of the country’s 240 million population or around 29 million people are underprivileged.
Unemployment, though slightly improving over the past few years, remains at 6.3 million. Education is still a luxury for many as each year 1.8 million
young people are unable to continue their education due to financial difficulties, and only 26 percent of graduates have the means to pursue higher
education. Women also face difficulties such as availability of health facilities and limited participation in the society when resources and opportunities
remain uneven. At the same time, entrepreneurship which could be an engine for growth remains low, with entrepreneurs making up just 0.18 percent
of the workforce. These challenges need to be addressed immediately, and it is the responsibility of all members of the society. By strengthening the
education sector, empowering women, and fostering an environment for entrepreneurship to thrive, we can contribute to a better Indonesia.

Data Badan Pusat Statistik menunjukkan sekitar 12 persen dari 240

memperkuat sektor pendidikan, memberdayakan wanita dan
mendorong perkembangan kewirausahaan, kita turut berkontribusi
untuk Indonesia yang lebih baik.

ndonesia’s wealth of traditional games inspired the publication of the 2012 Annual Report of Putera Sampoerna Foundation (PSF). The
lessons embodied in these games correspond with the values it holds precious such as self-confidence, determination, courage, agility,
creativity and teamwork. PSF’s work began in 2001 when it laid down the foundation to create a better future for Indonesia. Since then,
it has continued to build on this foundation in its mission to enrich the lives of beneficiaries, and set them on the path of sustainable change
towards betterment.
PSF believes that shaping communities and spurring socio-economic developments take the country forward and promote economic vitality and
growth. By believing in the potential of Indonesians, instilling them with important values, nurturing them, and helping them achieve their goals,
they are able to contribute to a brighter future for the country and their success becomes an inspiration to many others.

ABOUT PUTERA SAMPOERNA FOUNDATION
ounded in 2001, Putera Sampoerna Foundation (PSF) began as a philanthropic organization which granted scholarships to underprivileged
youth. It then expanded its programs to include initiatives that improve the quality of education in Indonesia, carrying out programs for
school and teacher development, and student financing for higher education. To create Indonesian leaders with global scope, PSF
introduced international standard learning institutions, Sampoerna Academy and Sampoerna School of Education, which were founded in 2009.
In 2010, PSF transformed as a social business institution to attain sustainability and tap a wider spectrum of recipients. More initiatives were
directed towards a more viable and internationally competitive Indonesia. These programs increase students’ access to leading universities,
improve women’s contribution to society and economy, and aid entrepreneurs and start-up businesses. PSF also launched Sampoerna School of
Business, a center of higher learning that develops business leaders and entrepreneurs. PSF is the first non-profit organization to receive the ISO
9001:2008 certificate for standardized quality management systems, a reflection of its strive to excellence, professionalism and transparency.

ada 2001, Putera Sampoerna Foundation (PSF) berdiri
sebagai organisasi filantropi yang memberikan beasiswa
untuk remaja prasejahtera. PSF memperluas lingkupnya
ke peningkatan kualitas pendidikan Indonesia, melaksanakan
program pengembangan sekolah dan guru serta pendanaan siswa
ke perguruan tinggi. Untuk menciptakan pemimpin Indonesia
berwawasan global, PSF memperkenalkan institusi pendidikan
berstandar internasional; maka, Sampoerna Academy dan
Sampoerna School of Education didirikan pada 2009.
Pada 2010, PSF bertransformasi menjadi institusi bisnis sosial
yang memberikan solusi berkelanjutan agar dapat menjangkau
kalangan penerima bantuan yang lebih luas. Lebih banyak prakarsa
digiatkan agar Indonesia lebih mampu bersaing di dunia seperti
meningkatkan akses siswa ke universitas terbaik, meningkatkan
kontribusi wanita pada perekonomian masyarakat, serta membantu
wirausahawan dan usaha rintisan. PSF juga mendirikan Sampoerna
School of Business, yakni pusat pendidikan tinggi untuk mencetak

country’s prosperity entails more than economic expansion. It includes how it is transformed into social progress, giving benefits
to more people and creating opportunities for advancement to those less privileged. In the last few years, Indonesia has exhibited
its resilience and exceptional growth as the world economy slowed down, but it has yet to optimize this advantage and leverage its
abundant resources to tackle the entrenched problems of wide income disparity, unemployment, and other social issues such as the welfare
of women. To make headway in that direction, the country needs a generation of forward-looking leaders with a high level of professional
competence, strong social awareness, and uncompromising integrity. Developing future leaders and entrepreneurs with these qualities is a duty
that has driven Putera Sampoerna Foundation since it was founded in 2001.
The development of human capital to face intensified global competition calls for a substantial and well-targeted investment into the education
of the youth and the empowerment of their communities. This is an endeavor too immense for any one organization to carry out, and only strong
cooperation with various sectors can ensure the sustainability of our programs. With our partners, we create initiatives that enable individuals to
apply their experience, knowledge and skills to effect social, political and economic changes, breaking the mold that has restricted the country

masih perlu lebih mengoptimalkan situasi ini dengan memanfaatkan

aving mapped out its journey as a social business institution and created various new entities and programs to support this blueprint in
previous years, Putera Sampoerna Foundation (PSF) prioritized developing leadership, entrepreneurship and strengthening outreach and
community development. PSF strived to reach ideals with sustainable programs that make greater impact. One of the major initiatives
in 2012 was the introduction of fee-paying students to Sampoerna Academy (SA). This move was aimed at creating a more diverse learning
environment, in which the public can experience PSF’s system of education. The Gerakan Indonesia Berkibar movement was also initiated to
facilitate an inclusive and nationwide participation in efforts to increase access to education and improve the quality of the school system. PSF
is proud to have sent this year the first batch of SA graduates to top universities here and abroad, where they have so far shown outstanding
academic achievement.
The community development programs focus on empowering women with training and micro financing facilities, as well as providing entrepreneurs
with the skills, networking and opportunities to grow their businesses. To achieve this, PSF created pilot projects that will be developed to scale. A
system was also developed to encourage the exchange of skills and the availability of capital. PSF still has a long way to go, but every one of the
successful projects and initiatives has shown the promises of molding globally competent and socially responsible generations of future leaders.

The year 2012 has been a year of fulfillment for us as we worked
to bring all the four pillars together to form an integrative
approach, with education remaining our main thrust.

mendukung rencana di tahun sebelumnya, Putera Sampoerna
Foundation (PSF) memprioritaskan pengembangan kepemimpinan,
kewirausahaan dan memperluas jangkauan dan pemberdayaan
masyarakat. PSF berupaya melalui program berkelanjutan yang
berdampak lebih besar. Salah satu program utama pada 2012
adalah membuka Sampoerna Academy (SA) bagi siswa berbayar.
Langkah ini untuk menciptakan keragaman lingkungan belajar dan
masyarakat luas dapat mengenyam sistem pendidikan PSF. Gerakan
Indonesia Berkibar juga dibentuk untuk memperluas partisipasi
nasional dalam upaya meningkatkan akses ke pendidikan dan
kualitas sistem sekolah. Tahun ini, PSF telah mengirimkan lulusan
pertama SA ke universitas terbaik di dalam dan luar negeri. Mereka
telah menunjukkan prestasi akademis yang membanggakan.
Program pengembangan masyarakat berfokus pada pemberdayaan
wanita melalui pelatihan dan fasilitas kredit mikro, serta membekali
pengusaha dengan keterampilan, memperluas jaringan dan peluang
untuk mengembangkan usaha. Untuk ini, PSF menciptakan proyek
percontohan sebelum dikembangkan ke skala besar. Sistem
pertukaran keterampilan dan pengadaan modal juga dibentuk.
Perjalanan PSF masih panjang, namun setiap tugas dan program
yang berhasil merefleksikan upaya akan terbentuknya generasi
pemimpin masa depan yang berkompetensi global dan berjiwa sosial.

Millions of Indonesians still cannot afford education, making it difficult for
them to improve their welfare and rise above their financial limitations.
Indonesia trails its neighbors in the rate of enrollment in higher
education, and its education systems are not equipped to prepare
students for international participation. Putera Sampoerna Foundation
recognizes that education is a basic human right, and through its
programs, access to quality education is enhanced -- a crucial step to
the development of knowledgeable and competent leaders.
Despite its outstanding economic growth, Indonesia still suffers from
a high unemployment rate. Micro, small and medium-sized businesses
have the potential to generate jobs in developing economies like
Indonesia, but they often face barriers in getting capital and have an
underdeveloped capacity to expand. Putera Sampoerna Foundation
offers initiatives that develop innovative entrepreneurs and business
leaders, enabling them to contribute to job creation.
With the largest Muslim population in the world, Indonesia is
capable of developing Islam-based initiatives. The collection of
religious tithing provides opportunities to access quality education
for the underprivileged, and enable much-needed relief to those
affected by natural disasters. Through this initiative, Putera
Sampoerna Foundation nurtures future leaders and global citizens
who are morally upright.
In the country, women face limited access to education and
inadequate health awareness and social services. Empowering
women through health and life skills education, vocational
training and micro financing will enhance their contribution to
family income and welfare. Putera Sampoerna Foundation also
enables women to play active roles in the social and economic
development of their communities.

Kita tertinggal dari negara tetangga dalam jumlah siswa

membekali siswa untuk berpartisipasi global. Menyadari
pendidikan merupakan hak setiap warga, Putera
Sampoerna Foundation berupaya meningkatkan akses ke
pendidikan berkualitas–langkah penting dalam mencetak
pemimpin berpengetahuan yang kompeten.
Meski memiliki pertumbuhan ekonomi yang luar
biasa, Indonesia masih menghadapi masalah tingkat
pengangguran yang tinggi. Usaha mikro, kecil dan
menengah yang berpotensi untuk menciptakan lapangan
kerja, masih sering menghadapi hambatan modal dan
kapasitas untuk memperluas bisnis. Putera Sampoerna
Foundation menawarkan program pengembangan
wirausahawan dan pemimpin usaha yang inovatif. Kami
memudahkan mereka untuk menciptakan lapangan kerja.
Di pelosok negeri, wanita menghadapi
keterbatasan akses pendidikan dan tidak
memadainya kesadaran kesehatan dan pelayanan
sosial. Memberdayakan wanita melalui pendidikan
kesehatan dan keterampilan, pelatihan kejuruan
dan kredit mikro akan meningkatkan kontribusi
mereka bagi pendapatan dan kesejahteraan
keluarga. Putera Sampoerna Foundation juga
memberikan peluang wanita untuk berperan aktif

Dengan penduduk Muslim terbesar di dunia,
Indonesia berpotensi mengembangkan program
berbasis Islam. Pengumpulan dana keagamaan
memberikan peluang untuk mengakses pendidikan
berkualitas bagi kalangan prasejahtera, dan
memberikan bantuan yang dibutuhkan korban
bencana alam. Melalui program ini, Putera
Sampoerna Foundation membina calon pemimpin

leaders and top entrepreneurs. Sampoerna Academy network of boarding schools provides world-class education with focus on both

ampoerna Academy was established in 2009 as a network of high school level international standard boarding schools. In over three
years, Sampoerna Academy has assisted more than 1,000 underprivileged students to continue their education at its four locations in
Palembang, Malang, Bali and Bogor. Sampoerna Academy applies the national curriculum and the international standard curriculum of
the International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE) and aims at providing a holistic education that develops the student’s
academic ability as well as character, leadership, entrepreneurial and life skills.
Of the 226 first batch graduates of Sampoerna Academy this year, 201 were accepted in Indonesia’s top universities, and 25 others in various
reputable universities in the United States. In 2012, Sampoerna Academy has begun to accept students through a fee-paying program,
which will initially make up 10 percent of its students. This decision was made to accommodate parents who want to send their children to an
international standard boarding school and become high caliber future leaders.

afira Dwi Tyas Putri was attending a public junior high school in Lombok, West Nusa Tenggara, when her father, a science teacher,
encouraged her to apply at Sampoerna Academy. At the time, she had just won a couple of national and international awards for inventing
a technology of charging cellular phone using a dynamo-powered shoe that converts movement to energy.
Now an 11th grader at Sampoerna Academy Bogor, Safira says she has learned a lot from the school. Although she admits being humbled by
her peers’ accomplishments, her friendship with other students has helped her cope with the demanding schoolwork and discipline of life in
the boarding school. While attending the Academy, she won another award for her invention and was selected by the government to represent
Indonesian students in the United States. She also won third place at the National Young Investor Award 2012 for her Canting Batik project.

n 2009, when he passed the selection process and qualified for full student financing at the Sampoerna School of Education (SSE), Andik
Hidayat was still unsure whether he wanted to teach. Now in his sixth semester, he is passionate about becoming an educator when he
graduates, inspired by SSE’s learning environment and professors. At SSE, students not only learn through lecture-based classes, but also
through discussions, games and other methods. The assessment system also varies; instead of paper and pencil tests like in many universities,
students are assessed through presentations, role plays and even stage performance.
But it is the School Experience Program, which gives the students opportunity every semester to teach at a real school for two weeks, that has
motivated him to become a teacher, he says. Andik is also active in the Youth Educator Sharing Network which teaches youths in the provinces
how to be educators without being a teacher.

pendidik setelah lulus nanti karena menemukan inspirasi pada
suasana belajar dan para profesor SSE. Di SSE, para mahasiswa
tidak hanya belajar melalui kelas berbasis buku, tetapi juga melalui
diskusi, permainan dan metode lainnya. Sistem penilaian juga
bervariasi. Sebagai pengganti tes tertulis seperti yang umumnya

hen Wilson Luganto Sitompul received confirmation that he had passed the selection to attend the Sampoerna School of Business
(SSB) on a student financing scheme, he had also been accepted in the state-owned University of Indonesia. After the advice of his
mother, a primary school teacher, he finally chose Sampoerna School of Business out of financial reason. It was a decision that the
Palembang, South Sumatera native was happy to make.
Wilson says he has been able to improve his English even more at SSB, because all the classes are conducted in English and some of his
lecturers are foreigners. Having compared his studies with that of his friends who attend other universities, he also noticed that the curriculum
at SSB is in advance of other schools. Through the MEKAR Entrepreneur Network, a Putera Sampoerna Foundation business unit affiliated with
the school, he learns about entrepreneurship from successful guests who give talks in the campus. Wilson has also found a new passion here:
the Debate Club, and with his team he has won some national competitions.

PSF-SDO works with corporate partners to maximize the potentials of educators. Through its programs, teachers learn about classroom
management, more effective and creative ways of teaching, and methods in developing lesson plans to meet academic objectives. For better school
management, PSF-SDO provides training to principals, teachers and superintendents on skills such as budgeting and curriculum management.
The school management team, school committee and school community members also learn to apply participatory leadership skills in running their
school.
Some of PSF-SDO’s programs were created to meet the specific needs of the area. In Teluk Bintuni, West Papua. PSF-SDO combined the
Teachers Professionalism Development and School Assistance Programs with local primary, junior high and high schools in 2012. The program
includes workshops for teachers, school management and students’ parents; as well as mentoring services to teachers and student organizations.

enhancing the skills of other teachers since 2009, when some 60 teachers took part in Putera Sampoerna Foundation School Development
Outreach’s (PSF-SDO) training for master teachers and on Lesson Studies.
When PSF-SDO established the Teachers Learning Center (TLC) in October 2010 at the compound of the Karawang Office of Education,
Wandiyo and 19 other teachers received further training on various skills, including writing, how to use Microsoft PowerPoint, and the technique
of facilitating a class. Since then they have disseminated their knowledge to over 2,000 elementary and junior high school teachers in Karawang.
TLC is also open for any teachers in the area to hold discussions on education issues, or to use the available resources for writing.

A major initiative of the Koperasi Siswa Bangsa, the Dana Siswa Bangsa assistance is for high-achieving students to help them continue
their tertiary-level education. In 2012, 226 graduates of Sampoerna Academy in Malang and Palembang -- the first batch of graduates of the
international standard senior high boarding school -- became eligible to receive this financial assistance.
Of these graduates, 25 were accepted into universities in the United States, including Texas Tech University, University of Missouri and
University of Hawaii at Manoa. A total of 170 passed the test to enter prestigious state universities in Indonesia, including the University of
Indonesia, Bandung Institute of Technology, and Gadjah Mada University. The remaining graduates got into top private universities. Aside from
the financial assistance, KSB also provided the 25 students who were accepted at the US universities with pre-departure orientation on daily
living skills as foreign students.
Students who receive the Dana Siswa Bangsa financial assistance automatically become members of Koperasi Siswa Bangsa. They pay it
forward by giving back to the cooperative once they earn money after graduation, so that they can help provide access to higher education for
future generations.
Sebagai prakarsa utama dari Koperasi Siswa Bangsa (KSB), Dana
Siswa Bangsa ditujukan pada siswa berprestasi untuk melanjutkan
pendidikan ke perguruan tinggi. Pada 2012, sebanyak 226 lulusan
Sampoerna Academy Malang dan Palembang—lulusan generasi
pertama dari SMA berasrama bertaraf internasional—menjadi
calon penerima bantuan ini.
Dari jumlah lulusan tersebut, 25 siswa diterima di universitas di
Amerika Serikat, termasuk Texas Tech University, University of
Missouri dan University of Hawaii at Manoa. Sebanyak 170 diterima
di universitas negeri terbaik di Indonesia, termasuk Universitas
Indonesia, Institut Teknologi Bandung, dan Universitas Gadjah
Mada. Selebihnya, para lulusan Sampoerna Academy meneruskan
ke universitas swasta terdepan. Selain dana bantuan, KSB juga
memberikan orientasi siswa asing bagi 25 siswa yang diterima di
universitas di Amerika Serikat, sebagai persiapan sebelum mereka
berangkat.

anggota KSB. Setelah lulus dan mulai menerima penghasilan,
mereka akan mengembalikan dana pendidikan tersebut sehingga

Patrick Lagaunne, 18, from Palembang, South Sumatera where his father drives a motorcycle taxi. He hopes to take part in the country’s
economic development once he graduates. His mate Naasa Fikri, 19, from Ponorogo, East Java wants to develop industrial robots in Indonesia
when he finishes his computer engineering studies in the same university.
KSB provides recipients with financial support to allow them to pursue their dreams so that they, in turn, can share the same opportunity with
other aspiring students in the future. KSB also prepares them academically, financially and administratively before they leave for abroad.

stablished in 2009, Sahabat Wanita’s activities are run by Yayasan Sahabat Wanita and Koperasi Sahabat Wanita in cooperation with the
government and the private sector. Yayasan Sahabat Wanita conducts training programs on entrepreneurship, health, finance and special
skills, while Koperasi Sahabat Wanita provides assistance to support entrepreneurship and improve the well-being of its members.
Since it was founded, Sahabat Wanita has given training sessions on financial management, basic entrepreneurship and health to more than
2,500 women in various parts of Indonesia. It has also provided micro financing loans to members of Koperasi Sahabat Wanita, fostered retail
networks for small stallholders in Tangerang, and built women and children’s community centers.

Euis gathered a number of women in her area to help them play a bigger role
in the community through a catfish farming program with Sahabat Wanita.
uis Chodijah, 41, is coordinator for a group of five women under the Sahabat Wanita (SW) catfish farming project at Dangdang Village in
Tangerang. Under the program, the women were provided with means and know-how to farm catfish at their front yard. They were taught to
build a simple tarpaulin-layered pond, raise the fish, as well as harvest and market them. They each have two ponds in front of their houses.
Euis says in the beginning, the women were reluctant to join the program as they felt they had no knowledge about raising catfish; but every week
SW facilitators visited the women to assist them in the catfish farming, provided them with equipment needed, and offered consultations if they
encounter problems. This raised the confidence of the women to take part in the program. In fact, the biggest benefit for these women is the
knowledge they gain, she says. All the husbands are fully supportive of their wives in the project, even helping them maintain the ponds. Another
good impact of the program, according to Euis, is that it gives the women positive things to talk about, and they make productive use of their time.

uis Chodijah, 41, adalah koordinator bagi lima wanita di
bawah proyek Sahabat Wanita (SW) yang bergerak di
peternakan lele di Kampung Dangdang, Tangerang. Dalam
proyek ini, mereka disediakan prasarana dan pengetahuan untuk
beternak lele di halaman depan rumah. Mereka belajar membangun
kolam lele sederhana berlapis terpal, mengembangbiakkan,
memanen hasil dan memasarkannya. Masing-masing memiliki dua
kolam di depan rumahnya.
Euis mengatakan bahwa awalnya mereka ragu untuk bergabung
karena merasa tidak memiliki pengalaman tentang peternakan
lele. Namun, setiap minggu, fasilitator SW membantu mereka
untuk beternak lele, menyediakan peralatan yang diperlukan dan
menawarkan konsultasi jika mereka menghadapi masalah. Hal ini
membangun keyakinan mereka untuk bergabung dalam program
ini. Malahan bagi mereka, manfaat terbesar adalah pengetahuan
yang didapat. Para suami mendukung proyek ini sepenuhnya,
bahkan membantu memelihara kolam-kolam mereka. Menurut
Euis, program ini memberikan bahan perbincangan yang positif
dan mereka dapat menghabiskan waktu secara produktif.

atut Cahyadi, 39, found out about MEKAR Entrepreneur Network on the internet in 2011. At the time Klenger Burger, the business he
founded with his wife Velly Kristanti after years of corporate career in 2006, had expanded rapidly from a burger joint to 70 franchised
outlets in three cities. The rapid expansion, however, led to problems in terms of management and quality standards, and significant
loss to the company by 2009.
Not long after joining, MEKAR Entrepreneur Network connected Klenger Burger with potential investors, helping the couple analyze their
business to find out what they need from an investor. The ensuing process finally led to a deal with a Singaporean investor amounting to Rp
1.5 billion in September 2012. The fund was used to overhaul Klenger Burger’s management, creating a more accountable cashier system,
improving logistics, and renewing its brand identity.

Network dari internet pada 2011. Saat itu Klenger Burger,
usaha yang didirikan dengan istrinya, Velly Kristanti, setelah
lama berkarir di perusahaan pada 2006, berkembang pesat menjadi
70 waralaba burger di tiga kota. Namun perkembangan pesat ini
menyebabkan masalah pada manajemen dan standar kualitas yang
berujung di kerugian besar pada perusahaan pada 2009.
Tak lama setelah bergabung, MEKAR Entrepreneur Network
menghubungkan Klenger Burger dengan calon investor, membantu
pasangan ini untuk menganalisa usaha dan kebutuhan mereka dari
investor. Proses panjang ini berakhir pada kesepakatan senilai Rp
1,5 milyar dengan seorang investor Singapura. Dana ini digunakan
untuk merombak manajemen Klenger Burger, menciptakan sistem

hen Abdul Rahman was accepted in Sampoerna Academy Bogor through Bait Al-Kamil (BAK), he was concerned that the portion
of religious studies at the school would be less than at his Islamic junior high school. But his aging parents could barely afford to
pay for the schooling of all six children, so he could not pass up the opportunity. He was relieved to find that Sampoerna Academy
provides a once-a-week religious mentoring for recipients of BAK student assistance.
Being involved in the school’s Islamic club has also strengthened 15-year old Yolanda Fiska’s faith, while the discipline of living in a boarding
school helps her become more organized and focused. Sleman, Yogyakarta native Vito Imanda, 15, says the school’s Pathway to Leadership

or more than a decade, Putera Sampoerna Foundation (PSF) has continuously and consistently expanded the scope of its activities
as well as the reach of its programs to ensure the developmental impacts are not concentrated in just a few areas. This is PSF’s most
important role: as a catalyst for change.
In the field of education, these programs raise the quality of schools and teachers; ensure that students remain in school and can afford to
continue their studies into higher learning; and provide international standard centers of learning for future leaders and entrepreneurs. In
community empowerment, there is a network for entrepreneurs to enhance their capacities and for providing opportunities to obtain capital.
There are also training opportunities and community forums to improve the skills and knowledge of women so they can make changes in their
lives and those of their families and communities. PSF honors great ideas and, more importantly, it works to turn them into reality to further the
goal of developing future leaders in various sectors for a better Indonesia. PSF provides global opportunities to beneficiaries to enhance their

reating a better future for Indonesia requires a big investment and a collective effort. Partners of Putera Sampoerna Foundation (PSF)
range from government agencies, corporate donors, non-government institutions to individuals who lend their efforts through donation
or participation in education and empowerment programs. PSF is equipped with professional fundraising capabilities through strong
Public-Private Partnership (PPP) both locally and internationally. One of the PPP initiatives is the Gerakan Indonesia Berkibar designed to
improve the quality of education across Indonesia.
Another initiative is the Koperasi Siswa Bangsa which made it possible for PSF to send off the first batch of 226 graduates from Sampoerna
Academy to attend top public and private universities in Indonesia and in the United States. Experience in the field of education has enabled
PSF to build a strong network of schools, educators, experts and professionals across the country to ensure well-targeted assistance.
The sustainability of these programs drives PSF’s constant effort for improvement, while strong commitment to uphold accountability and
transparency is the foundation of its partners’ trust.

Putera Sampoerna Foundation (PSF) berasal dari
instansi pemerintah, donor perusahaan, lembaga non-pemerintah
hingga ke individu yang membantu melalui donasi atau partisipasi
dalam program pendidikan dan pemberdayaan. PSF dibekali
kemampuan profesional untuk menggalang dana melalui Public-
Private Partnership (PPP) yang kuat, baik secara lokal maupun
internasional. Salah satu inisiatif PPP adalah Gerakan Indonesia
Berkibar yang dirancang untuk meningkatkan kualitas pendidikan di
seluruh Indonesia.
Inisiatif lainnya adalah Koperasi Siswa Bangsa yang memungkinkan
PSF mengirim angkatan pertama dari 226 lulusan Sampoerna
Academy untuk melanjutkan pendidikan ke universitas negeri dan
swasta terbaik di Indonesia dan di Amerika Serikat. Pengalaman di
bidang pendidikan memungkinkan PSF untuk membangun jaringan
sekolah, pendidik, tenaga ahli dan profesional yang kuat secara
nasional untuk memastikan bantuan tepat sasaran. Keberlanjutan
program ini memacu PSF untuk terus berupaya demi perbaikan,

Sebagai wadah yang merangkul kemitraan pemerintah
dan swasta, GERAKAN Indonesia Berkibar menggabungkan
berbagai informasi dan aspirasi pendidikan untuk
menciptakan perubahan yang berarti dan berkelanjutan.
erakan Indonesia Berkibar (GIB) adalah suatu gerakan
nasional untuk meningkatkan kualitas guru dan sekolah,
serta memacu persaingan Indonesia di pasar dunia.
Gerakan ini menggunakan strategi dan teknik peningkatan
sekolah melalui pelatihan dan dukungan bagi pengajar, berfokus
pada pendidikan formal dan informal untuk mengatasi berbagai
tantangan yang dihadapi bidang pendidikan.
GIB mengundang partisipasi dari berbagai pihak untuk mencapai
tujuannya. Antara lain Kementerian Pendidikan dan Kebudayaan
serta pemerintah daerah yang memiliki kekuasaan legislatif untuk
bertindak sebagai pendukung; mitra seperti perusahaan swasta
dan BUMN yang mengalokasikan dana untuk program tanggung
jawab sosial perusahaan di bidang pendidikan; fasilitator seperti
organisasi non-pemerintah (LSM) untuk mengimplementasikan
program-program ini; dan pihak pemberi pengaruh seperti media,
tokoh masyarakat dan lembaga pendidikan yang meningkatkan
pemahaman mengenai pentingnya pendidikan.

competitiveness in the global marketplace. It uses proven school improvement strategies and techniques through advanced training and
support to educators, and focuses on formal and informal education to address some of the challenges facing the education sector.
GIB invites the participation of several parties to carry out its objectives. Among others are the Ministry of Education and Culture and the local
government which have the legislative power to act as endorsers; partners such as private and state-owned corporations that allocate funds to
carry out CSR programs pertaining to education; facilitators such as non-government organizations (NGOs) to implement these programs; and
influencers like the media, community leaders educational institutions to propagate increased understanding of the importance of education.

INDONESIA IN THE MAKING ven as the world experiences economic downturns, Indonesia’s economy has continued to grow in recent years, reaching 6.5 percent in 2012, ahead of neighboring Malaysia at 3.7 percent and Singapore at 1.2 percent. Indonesia has become one of Asia Pacific’s most vibrant democracies, a confident middle-income country, according to the World Bank. Nevertheless, the country still needs to realize its full potential and overcome setbacks such as poverty, unemployment, substandard education and issues related to women’s welfare. Data from Central Statistics Bureau show that about 12 percent of the country’s 240 million population or around 29 million people are underprivileged. Unemployment, though slightly improving over the past few years, remains at 6.3 million. Education is still a luxury for many as each year 1.8 million young people are unable to continue their education due to financial difficulties, and only 26 percent of graduates have the means to pursue higher education. Women also face difficulties such as availability of health facilities and limited participation in the society when resources and opportunities remain uneven. At the same time, entrepreneurship which could be an engine for growth remains low, with entrepreneurs making up just 0.18 percent of the workforce. These challenges need to be addressed immediately, and it is the responsibility of all members of the society. By strengthening the education sector, empowering women, and fostering an environment for entrepreneurship to thrive, we can contribute to a better Indonesia. E Realizing Potential, Tackling Challenges INDONESIA HAS EMERGED AS ONE OF THE KEY FORCES IN THE WORLD BECAUSE OF ITS EXEMPLARY ACCOMPLISHMENTS OVER THE LAST DECADE. The lessons embodied in these games correspond with the values it holds precious such as self-confidence, determination, courage, agility, creativity and teamwork. PSF’s work began in 2001 when it laid down the foundation to create a better future for Indonesia. Since then, it has continued to build on this foundation in its mission to enrich the lives of beneficiaries, and set them on the path of sustainable change towards betterment. PSF believes that shaping communities and spurring socio-economic developments take the country forward and promote economic vitality and growth.   • 7. ABOUT PUTERA SAMPOERNA FOUNDATION ounded in 2001, Putera Sampoerna Foundation (PSF) began as a philanthropic organization which granted scholarships to underprivileged youth. It then expanded its programs to include initiatives that improve the quality of education in Indonesia, carrying out programs for school and teacher development, and student financing for higher education. To create Indonesian leaders with global scope, PSF introduced international standard learning institutions, Sampoerna Academy and Sampoerna School of Education, which were founded in 2009. In 2010, PSF transformed as a social business institution to attain sustainability and tap a wider spectrum of recipients. More initiatives were directed towards a more viable and internationally competitive Indonesia. These programs increase students’ access to leading universities, improve women’s contribution to society and economy, and aid entrepreneurs and start-up businesses. PSF also launched Sampoerna School of Business, a center of higher learning that develops business leaders and entrepreneurs. PSF is the first non-profit organization to receive the ISO 9001:2008 certificate for standardized quality management systems, a reflection of its strive to excellence, professionalism and transparency. It includes how it is transformed into social progress, giving benefits to more people and creating opportunities for advancement to those less privileged. In the last few years, Indonesia has exhibited its resilience and exceptional growth as the world economy slowed down, but it has yet to optimize this advantage and leverage its abundant resources to tackle the entrenched problems of wide income disparity, unemployment, and other social issues such as the welfare of women. To make headway in that direction, the country needs a generation of forward-looking leaders with a high level of professional competence, strong social awareness, and uncompromising integrity. Developing future leaders and entrepreneurs with these qualities is a duty that has driven Putera Sampoerna Foundation since it was founded in 2001. The development of human capital to face intensified global competition calls for a substantial and well-targeted investment into the education of the youth and the empowerment of their communities. This is an endeavor too immense for any one organization to carry out, and only strong cooperation with various sectors can ensure the sustainability of our programs. With our partners, we create initiatives that enable individuals to apply their experience, knowledge and skills to effect social, political and economic changes, breaking the mold that has restricted the country from maximizing its international participation. TWENTY TWELVE TOWARDS LIFETIME OF CHANGES aving mapped out its journey as a social business institution and created various new entities and programs to support this blueprint in previous years, Putera Sampoerna Foundation (PSF) prioritized developing leadership, entrepreneurship and strengthening outreach and community development. PSF strived to reach ideals with sustainable programs that make greater impact. One of the major initiatives in 2012 was the introduction of fee-paying students to Sampoerna Academy (SA). This move was aimed at creating a more diverse learning environment, in which the public can experience PSF’s system of education. The Gerakan Indonesia Berkibar movement was also initiated to facilitate an inclusive and nationwide participation in efforts to increase access to education and improve the quality of the school system. PSF is proud to have sent this year the first batch of SA graduates to top universities here and abroad, where they have so far shown outstanding academic achievement. The community development programs focus on empowering women with training and micro financing facilities, as well as providing entrepreneurs with the skills, networking and opportunities to grow their businesses. To achieve this, PSF created pilot projects that will be developed to scale. A system was also developed to encourage the exchange of skills and the availability of capital. PSF still has a long way to go, but every one of the successful projects and initiatives has shown the promises of molding globally competent and socially responsible generations of future leaders. H Sustainability for Bigger Impact The year 2012 has been a year of fulfillment for us as we worked to bring all the four pillars together to form an integrative approach, with education remaining our main thrust. PSF berupaya melalui program berkelanjutan yang berdampak lebih besar. Salah satu program utama pada 2012 adalah membuka Sampoerna Academy (SA) bagi siswa berbayar. Langkah ini untuk menciptakan keragaman lingkungan belajar dan masyarakat luas dapat mengenyam sistem pendidikan PSF. Gerakan Indonesia Berkibar juga dibentuk untuk memperluas partisipasi nasional dalam upaya meningkatkan akses ke pendidikan dan kualitas sistem sekolah. EDUCATION ENTREPRENEURSHIP WOMEN EMPOWERMENT COMPASSIONATE RELIEF PILLARS OF PUTERA SAMPOERNA FOUNDATION Millions of Indonesians still cannot afford education, making it difficult for them to improve their welfare and rise above their financial limitations. Indonesia trails its neighbors in the rate of enrollment in higher education, and its education systems are not equipped to prepare students for international participation. Putera Sampoerna Foundation recognizes that education is a basic human right, and through its programs, access to quality education is enhanced -- a crucial step to the development of knowledgeable and competent leaders. Despite its outstanding economic growth, Indonesia still suffers from a high unemployment rate. Micro, small and medium-sized businesses have the potential to generate jobs in developing economies like Indonesia, but they often face barriers in getting capital and have an underdeveloped capacity to expand. Putera Sampoerna Foundation offers initiatives that develop innovative entrepreneurs and business leaders, enabling them to contribute to job creation. With the largest Muslim population in the world, Indonesia is capable of developing Islam-based initiatives. The collection of religious tithing provides opportunities to access quality education for the underprivileged, and enable much-needed relief to those affected by natural disasters. Through this initiative, Putera Sampoerna Foundation nurtures future leaders and global citizens who are morally upright. In the country, women face limited access to education and inadequate health awareness and social services. Empowering women through health and life skills education, vocational training and micro financing will enhance their contribution to family income and welfare. Putera Sampoerna Foundation also enables women to play active roles in the social and economic development of their communities. In over three years, Sampoerna Academy has assisted more than 1,000 underprivileged students to continue their education at its four locations in Palembang, Malang, Bali and Bogor. A SUCCESS STORY afira Dwi Tyas Putri was attending a public junior high school in Lombok, West Nusa Tenggara, when her father, a science teacher, encouraged her to apply at Sampoerna Academy. At the time, she had just won a couple of national and international awards for inventing a technology of charging cellular phone using a dynamo-powered shoe that converts movement to energy. Now an 11th grader at Sampoerna Academy Bogor, Safira says she has learned a lot from the school. Although she admits being humbled by her peers’ accomplishments, her friendship with other students has helped her cope with the demanding schoolwork and discipline of life in the boarding school. When PSF-SDO established the Teachers Learning Center (TLC) in October 2010 at the compound of the Karawang Office of Education, Wandiyo and 19 other teachers received further training on various skills, including writing, how to use Microsoft PowerPoint, and the technique of facilitating a class. Since then they have disseminated their knowledge to over 2,000 elementary and junior high school teachers in Karawang. TLC is also open for any teachers in the area to hold discussions on education issues, or to use the available resources for writing.   • 25. 25 graduates of Sampoerna Academy and members of Koperasi Siswa Bangsa have been accepted by leading universities in the United States. A major initiative of the Koperasi Siswa Bangsa, the Dana Siswa Bangsa assistance is for high-achieving students to help them continue their tertiary-level education. In 2012, 226 graduates of Sampoerna Academy in Malang and Palembang -- the first batch of graduates of the international standard senior high boarding school -- became eligible to receive this financial assistance. Of these graduates, 25 were accepted into universities in the United States, including Texas Tech University, University of Missouri and University of Hawaii at Manoa. A total of 170 passed the test to enter prestigious state universities in Indonesia, including the University of Indonesia, Bandung Institute of Technology, and Gadjah Mada University. The remaining graduates got into top private universities. Aside from the financial assistance, KSB also provided the 25 students who were accepted at the US universities with pre-departure orientation on daily living skills as foreign students. Students who receive the Dana Siswa Bangsa financial assistance automatically become members of Koperasi Siswa Bangsa. They pay it forward by giving back to the cooperative once they earn money after graduation, so that they can help provide access to higher education for future generations. In the same campus, studying mathematics and economics, is Timotius Patrick Lagaunne, 18, from Palembang, South Sumatera where his father drives a motorcycle taxi. He hopes to take part in the country’s economic development once he graduates. His mate Naasa Fikri, 19, from Ponorogo, East Java wants to develop industrial robots in Indonesia when he finishes his computer engineering studies in the same university. KSB provides recipients with financial support to allow them to pursue their dreams so that they, in turn, can share the same opportunity with other aspiring students in the future. SAHABAT WANITA Sahabat Wanita is a social organization dedicated to empowering women through training and economic development, enabling them to play a bigger role in the community and create a self-reliant society. stablished in 2009, Sahabat Wanita’s activities are run by Yayasan Sahabat Wanita and Koperasi Sahabat Wanita in cooperation with the government and the private sector. Yayasan Sahabat Wanita conducts training programs on entrepreneurship, health, finance and special skills, while Koperasi Sahabat Wanita provides assistance to support entrepreneurship and improve the well-being of its members. Since it was founded, Sahabat Wanita has given training sessions on financial management, basic entrepreneurship and health to more than 2,500 women in various parts of Indonesia. It has also provided micro financing loans to members of Koperasi Sahabat Wanita, fostered retail networks for small stallholders in Tangerang, and built women and children’s community centers. A SUCCESS STORY EUIS CHODIJAH Euis gathered a number of women in her area to help them play a bigger role in the community through a catfish farming program with Sahabat Wanita. uis Chodijah, 41, is coordinator for a group of five women under the Sahabat Wanita (SW) catfish farming project at Dangdang Village in Tangerang. Under the program, the women were provided with means and know-how to farm catfish at their front yard. They were taught to build a simple tarpaulin-layered pond, raise the fish, as well as harvest and market them. They each have two ponds in front of their houses. Euis says in the beginning, the women were reluctant to join the program as they felt they had no knowledge about raising catfish; but every week SW facilitators visited the women to assist them in the catfish farming, provided them with equipment needed, and offered consultations if they encounter problems. This raised the confidence of the women to take part in the program. In fact, the biggest benefit for these women is the knowledge they gain, she says. All the husbands are fully supportive of their wives in the project, even helping them maintain the ponds. Another good impact of the program, according to Euis, is that it gives the women positive things to talk about, and they make productive use of their time. “With this program, the women can stay home and still contribute to the family’s economy.” - Euis, 41 “Melalui program ini, wanita tetap dapat tinggal di rumah tetapi berkontribusi pada perekonomian keluarga.” - Euis, 41 E uis Chodijah, 41, adalah koordinator bagi lima wanita di bawah proyek Sahabat Wanita (SW) yang bergerak di peternakan lele di Kampung Dangdang, Tangerang. Dalam proyek ini, mereka disediakan prasarana dan pengetahuan untuk beternak lele di halaman depan rumah. Mereka belajar membangun kolam lele sederhana berlapis terpal, mengembangbiakkan, memanen hasil dan memasarkannya. Masing-masing memiliki dua kolam di depan rumahnya. Euis mengatakan bahwa awalnya mereka ragu untuk bergabung karena merasa tidak memiliki pengalaman tentang peternakan lele. Namun, setiap minggu, fasilitator SW membantu mereka untuk beternak lele, menyediakan peralatan yang diperlukan dan menawarkan konsultasi jika mereka menghadapi masalah. Hal ini membangun keyakinan mereka untuk bergabung dalam program ini. Malahan bagi mereka, manfaat terbesar adalah pengetahuan yang didapat. At the time Klenger Burger, the business he founded with his wife Velly Kristanti after years of corporate career in 2006, had expanded rapidly from a burger joint to 70 franchised outlets in three cities. The rapid expansion, however, led to problems in terms of management and quality standards, and significant loss to the company by 2009. Not long after joining, MEKAR Entrepreneur Network connected Klenger Burger with potential investors, helping the couple analyze their business to find out what they need from an investor. The ensuing process finally led to a deal with a Singaporean investor amounting to Rp 1.5 billion in September 2012. The fund was used to overhaul Klenger Burger’s management, creating a more accountable cashier system, improving logistics, and renewing its brand identity. But his aging parents could barely afford to pay for the schooling of all six children, so he could not pass up the opportunity. PSF dibekali kemampuan profesional untuk menggalang dana melalui Public- Private Partnership (PPP) yang kuat, baik secara lokal maupun internasional. Salah satu inisiatif PPP adalah Gerakan Indonesia Berkibar yang dirancang untuk meningkatkan kualitas pendidikan di seluruh Indonesia. Inisiatif lainnya adalah Koperasi Siswa Bangsa yang memungkinkan PSF mengirim angkatan pertama dari 226 lulusan Sampoerna Academy untuk melanjutkan pendidikan ke universitas negeri dan swasta terbaik di Indonesia dan di Amerika Serikat. Pengalaman di bidang pendidikan memungkinkan PSF untuk membangun jaringan sekolah, pendidik, tenaga ahli dan profesional yang kuat secara nasional untuk memastikan bantuan tepat sasaran. It uses proven school improvement strategies and techniques through advanced training and support to educators, and focuses on formal and informal education to address some of the challenges facing the education sector. GIB invites the participation of several parties to carry out its objectives. Among others are the Ministry of Education and Culture and the local government which have the legislative power to act as endorsers; partners such as private and state-owned corporations that allocate funds to carry out CSR programs pertaining to education; facilitators such as non-government organizations (NGOs) to implement these programs; and influencers like the media, community leaders educational institutions to propagate increased understanding of the importance of education.
