Slides from a talk I gave at La Muse on October 17th 2013, about hackerspaces, makerspaces, fablabs etc. How they fit in to the Shared Space culture and how the spread of these ideas can change the cology of manufacturing for ever.
2. What is a Hackerspace?
Clue: not a place for this
3. Hacking and Making
Make:
form (something) by putting parts together or
combining substances; construct;
Hack:
make or modify something roughly and/or
quickly
Hackerspace/Makerspace:
place where people make or hack stuff
4. What’s in a name?
Alone in
a Garage
HackerSpace
FabLab
Factory
MakerSpace
Coworking
Incubator
Tiers-Lieux
7. In Geneva
Geneva-based hackerspace “Post T
enebras Lab” was officially created in
2009 at its constitutive general assembly.
Our objectives:
Create an open community of hackers, artists, and open source/hardware
enthusiasts to create, share, learn, and collaborate.
Help spread knowledge to the larger community, especially in the areas
of technology, DIY, security, and privacy.
Provide a space for creating, collaborations, workshops, and classes.
Provide resources (hardware, tools, materials, access, knowledge) to
members and the community.
Assist other groups that share similar objectives.
Seek to enable others, and others' projects; to help break down barriers; and
to avoid erecting barriers

11. Arduino
Arduino is an open-source
electronics prototyping platform
based on flexible, easy-to-use
hardware and software.
It’s intended for artists,
designers, hobbyists and anyone
interested in creating interactive
objects or enviroments

12. Raspberry Pi
The Raspberry Pi is a credit-card
sized computer that plugs into your
TV and a keyboard.
It’s a capable little PC which can
be used for many of the things that
your desktop PC does, like
spreadsheets, word-processing and
games.
It also plays high-definition video.
W want to see it being used by
e
kids all over the world to learn
programming.

13. Electronics & Software
Breadboards, Components
Resistors, LEDs etc
Soldering Stations

Rotating tool, so round cuts
17. Digital Fabrication
Idea -> CAD -> 2D or 3D Model
2D Model -> Lasercutter or CNC
3D Model -> 3D Printer or CNC
In a short time, you go from an idea in
your head to your idea in your hand!
