Design Theory (Ambient Media)

REDESIGNING DESIGN / JOS DE MUL
This article problems……

What designer can do under the
 situation in which design has
     been democratized ?
The answer is……

Designer as a Meta-Designer.
Humans vs Animals.
 in philosophical meaning.
Argument 1. by the biologist, Jakob von Uexküll.

Animals are limited into each of
    the Umwelt.
Umwelt means the environment which is
perceived by the Sensory system unique to the
    species respectively.
Argument 2. by the philosopher, Martin Heidegger.

   Although animals are in the
   environment which is given,
   humans have to design their
   own world.
The german word, Dasein means ‘being-in-the-world’.
The author implies that Dasein is Design(er).
Today’s exploration of human openness is ……

- Wikipedia, the open dictionary.

- MP3, the open(-source) audio compression.

- FabLab, the open design movement.
From Bits to Atoms.
- by 3D printer.

- by laser cutter.

- by milling machine, etc.
Then, the question is re-set to……

Does FabLab lose the profession
   of (old-type) designer ?
Now, we can concrete the initial answer “Metadesigner”.

    Metadesigner is the designer
    who shapes environments in
   which unskilled users can design.

   - to the parametric design via GUI.
   - to the inclusive design.
Image of Metadesign

                      DATABASE } Metadesign(er)

                           (Mass)Customization

              MATERIAL OBJECTS } Old-type
                                              Design(er)
However, there are 4 problems about making
(not digital data but) physical objects.

- its cost, or its difficulty to share.

- people’s motivation to make things.

- cloudsourcing can fall in folly of the crowds.

- about moral - What should NOT be created.
“Although we have to take these
 problems seriously, they should
not lead to the conclusion that
    we should avoid further
  development of open design.”
Design Theory (Ambient Media)

REDESIGNING DESIGN / JOS DE MUL

      REDESIGNING “REDESIGNING DESIGN”
                  / tomohta
I agree with the philosophical basement
      - Uexküll and Heidegger -
      of Open design, but partly.
Koichiro Kokubun,

Ethics in the leisure and boredom
             - What is the humane life ? - (2011)
This book problems……

Why are we bored in this rich,
 free, and enjoyable society ?
Kokubun coined the word……

       Inter-Umwelt Mobility.

           People have Umwelt too,
     but they can move one from another;
          animals can also (partly) do.
Do people start to design soon
after preparing ‘environment’ ?

Too emphasizing human’s openness to new
environment can fall in forgetting that
          design is NOT easy.
Only after recognizing hard to
create the new environment, we
 can start to think Metadesign
   - as the design education.
