This research proposes a new design system for consumers who would use the product to run an easy-to-operate design and selection tool by themselves instead of conventional Computer Aided Design (CAD). In terms of manufacturing the product, several studies focus on involving the consumer as much and as early as possible. However, recent developments of Additive Layer Manufacturing (ALM) technologies have led to a renewed interest in allowing the consumers to develop customised products. As a result, manufacturing is being brought closer to consumers. This paper would simplify the CAD stages by utilising design templates for consumer use in customising additive layer manufactured products.

Hello everybody.. I would like to present my research entitled “ TEMPLATES FOR CONSUMER USE IN DESIGNING CUSTOMISED PRODUCTS”. Before we start, I introduce my self, I am Yudhi, I am doing master by research at Lancaster Product Development Unit, Lancaster University and supervised by Dr. Allan Rennie. So, I apologise if my presentation will not go too deeply as any other PhD student research.
Start with background, We will have a look at consumer as a background.. The market has changed.. From trade era before industrialisation, then production era, sales era, marketing era and now… customisation era.. Also, consumerism characteristic are now becoming customerism. I do not have comprehensive data for all year, but I have this data from US News and World report that showed the need of customised product -such as computers, shoes, toys, bags, clothes and mail- increased from only 6% in 1997 and became 30% in 2005.
Consumers and market influenced the way of production. From hand made, mass production and then mass customisation. If we simply divide products into 2 type: customized product and mass product we would get the comparison of them like this. (it is not base on survey, it is just estimation base on technology exist at that time) At hand made technology era, we had all of the product were made one by one. It seems like customised product that we know today. Then, after industrial revolution, the number of mass production product started growing. Until almost all of kind of products are created by mass production way. Recently, with the sort of technology, the need of customisation can be accommodated and consequently, the number of customised product would increase again. And the most recent news, there is a project is now run by Cardiff University Innovative Manufacturing Research Centre, this project examines the next era of mass customization, called ultimate customisation. As a result, the number of individualised product will increase again.
If we have a look at this picture.. We believe that the market of customisation keeps growing.. They are now customising their t-shirt… this is the future market of cutomisation… and they will not only customise their t-shirt…
This is the project from Cardiff University, called Ultimate Customisation . They continuing the move of creating product technology from crafts way, mass production, mass customisation…. Then the next era of mass customisation, namely ultimate customisation.. And… we propose design template as a design tool to realise the ultimate customisation.
This is simple schematic diagram. With the capability of ALM we can offer features and accommodate customisation and all of the features are interfaced by design template.
