Speaker:
   Harmeshver Singh ( Haresh ) ( ReshWindblade )

Assistant / Technical Support:
  Jayaseelen Yezhuaralai ( Jaya ) ( yrcjaya )
 To teach others how to get an entire operating system
    into your pen drive.
To teach how to carry your applications with you when

you are always on the go.
To give an overview of portable operating systems

To create awareness of this “new” technology

    To save your cost

 Operating Systems: Operating system means the interface
between user and computer hardware. It acts as a host for
applications that run on machine, and it coordinates use of
 computer resources between different tasks.

 Examples: Microsoft Windows Vista,
 Microsoft Windows Xp, Ubuntu,
 Mac OS X Leopard, Mandriva,
 FreeBSD, etc etc
 Applications: Applications are a set of instructions for
  processor to execute different functions

 Examples: Adobe Photoshop, Microsoft Outlook Express,
Microsoft Word, GIMP, Microsoft Internet Explorer, Mozilla
  firefox
Lets check out a few scenarios:

 Situation #1: Your PC has an error and hence cannot boot
up, but you urgently need to grab an important presentation
  file from the hard disk

 Situation #2: You use computers a lot, but hate to download
extra programs each time you use different PCs. Maybe,
one doesn't have .rar extractor, while another doesn't have
your favorite browser with all it's plugins.

 Situation #3: Your using a PC with restricted access
( normal user account ) and need to use a software which
requires an administrator account to install it.
 Situation #4: You are bored at seeing other people's
desktop preferences, but you don't want disturb his/her
  settings.

 Situation #5: You are too used to Mac OS X look and feel,
but your friend's PC is Microsoft Windows, when he/she
borrows it to you to use, you are not comfortable with it.

 All the situation above can be solved and overcome with
the use of a portable Operating System. I will be using the
  recently released DreamLinux version 3.5
 Dreamlinux is a free, modern and modular GNU/Linux
system. It can be run directly from a CD/DVD/USBStick
and optionally be installed to a HDD, including IDE, SCSI,
  SATA, PATA and USB drives.

 Dreamlinux comes with a selection of the best applications
designed to meet most of your daily needs.

 Dreamlinux is based on the venerable Debian Operating
System. This means it takes advantage of Debian's best
features and adds its own modern development tools,
  system scripts and applications.
 Dreamlinux Desktop Edition 3.5 comes with XFCE Desktop
Environment as default. However, nothing prevents anyone
from using other desktop environments, thanks to
Dreamlinux's modular architecture. For example, you'll find
Gnome Desktop Environment available as an XFCE
replacement. Shortly, we will make LXDE, TDE and Fluxbox
 available as well.

Multimedia resources
 Dreamlinux comes with all the codecs and media players
needed for a good multimedia experience.

                            Gftp
                            Thunderbird Mail Client
Launchers:
                            Firefox 3.0.6
 Engage
 Avant-Window-Navigator  FlashPlayer 10

                           Office:
 Gimp 2.6
                            OpenOffice2.4
 Gthumb
 Xsane  Evince
Easy Install applications: Multimedia:
 Google-Earth  Rhythmbox
 Google-Desktop  Totem Media Player
 Google-Gadgets
                              Brasero

 Midori
 Wine-Doors
 W32Codecs
 Azureus
 Opera Browser and more.
 Runs across any i386/64bit platform.
 It's portable, fitting in your pocket
 It is free
 Large software library
 Able to carry your desktop preferences wherever you go
 Longer time for wear and tear to occur on your storage
    medium.
Immune to Conflicker / Most Virus / Malwares

Immune to windows domain security policy

Looks and feels like Mac OS X 10 Leopard

Able to modify to your needs

 ATI and Nvidia driver clashes
 Space is limited / small
 No Persistent Network Settings
 Wireless Driver issues
 Slower booting time compare to same thing on a hard disk
http://www.dreamlinux.com.br/tutorials/3.

Live CD/DVD:
 A live CD or live DVD is a CD or DVD containing a bootable
computer operating system. Live CDs are unique in that
they have the ability to run a complete, modern operating
system on a computer lacking mutable secondary storage,
such as a hard disk drive.

Live USB:
 Live USB flash drives are similar to live CDs/DVDs, but
often have the added functionality of automatically and
transparently writing changes back to their bootable
medium. The term quot;livequot; derives from the fact that these
CDs/DVDs each contain a complete, functioning and
operational operating system on the distribution medium.
Live Dream
 Creates an environment exactly like a Live CD, each time
you bootup the pendrive it creates a new session. Whatever
  you do is not saved.

Persistent Dream
 Same as Live Dream except whatever you do is saved.
n this section, we will be checking out a solution for people
who do not want to change operating systems or “fear” Linux
based stuff – Portable Applications.

he Portable Applications software that ill be using in this
session will be PortableApps.com
 PortableApps.com Suite is a complete collection of portable
apps including a web browser, email client, office suite,
  calendar/scheduler, instant messaging client, antivirus,
audio player, Sudoku game, password manager, PDF
reader, minesweeper clone, backup utility and integrated
menu, all preconfigured to work portably.

 Just drop it on your portable device and you're ready to go.

 Slax is a modern, portable, small and fast Linux operating
system with a modular approach and outstanding design.
Despite its small size, Slax provides a wide collection of pre-
installed software for daily use, including a well organized
graphical user interface and useful recovery tools for system
administrators. The modular approach gives you the ability
to include any other software in Slax easily.

 Official Website: http://www.slax.org/
 FaunOS is a portable, fully integrated Linux operating
system with over 600 preinstalled packages. It is specifically
designed to run from a portable USB memory device (such
as a USB flash drive). It can also be configured to boot from
other media, such as DVD, and even the internal hard drive,
but we will mainly focus on detachable media.
