MUSEUM of Art or in the MoMA in New York
or in any other GALLERY
WHAT KIND OF WORK IS IT?
It is an SCULPTURE
Ron Mueck is a London-based photo-realist artist. Born in Melbourne ,
Australia , to parents who were toy makers, he labored on children's television
shows for 15 years before working in special effects for such films as Labyrinth, a
1986 fantasy epic starring David Bowie

GEHARD DEMETZ
Impressive wood sculptures
by Italian artist Gehard

in 1972, Bolzano , and lives
and works in Selva di Val

PASSIVE SENTENCES
The queen ate a jam sandwich
Can you tell me what is the subject in
this sentence?
The queen ate a jam sandwich.
The queen is the subject of this
sentence.
This is an active sentence. The subject-the
queen ate a sandwich yesterday! The
most important thing in this sentence is
who ate the sandwich
People buy books in this wonderful shop
My mother painted her room last month
He will wash the car one day
I took the pictures with my camera
But we could change the sentence around.
The queen ate a jam sandwich
We could change the sense of the sentence by
saying...
The jam sandwich was eaten by the queen.
Which is the subject in this sentence?
The jam sandwich was being eaten by the queen.
This is a passive sentence. The subject-the jam
sandwich- is ‘suffering’ with the action of
the verb. It is not who makes the action . It
is being eaten!
• Perhaps this seems complicated!
– But it is not, you hear passive sentences all the time
– Mark was eating an apple
– The picture was painted by Tom
Are these sentences active or passive?
That’s right! This sentence is active.
Mark is actively eating the apple. The subject of the sentence is the
picture. The picture is having
something done to it.
Active Voice
Active voice is used to show that the subject of
the sentence is performing or causing the
action.
Example:
Lebron threw the basketball before the buzzer.
Lebron shot the basketball from the free throw
line.
Lebron scored three points.
Summing up
Passive Voice
Passive voice is used when the subject is the
recipient of the action.
Example:
The ball was thrown by Lebron.
The basket was shot by Lebron.
The score was made by Lebron.
Form of Passive Voice Verbs
 The passive voice requires a "double verb" and will
always consist of a form of the verb "to be" and the
past participle (usually the "en/ed/t" form) of another
verb.
 Example:
Active: John baked the bread.
Passive: The bread was baked by John. (Was is a
form of the verb “be”.)
 Review the forms of "to be":
 am, is, are, was, were, be,
being, been
How to make them
We ... chose ... plastic film to cover the microphone.
Active voice
Subject Verb Object
1st Find the object in the active and make it the
subject in the passive sentence
How to make them
Plastic film … was chosen … to cover the microphone.
Passive voice
Subject Verb Object
We ... chose ... plastic film to cover the microphone.
Active voice
Subject Verb Object
2nd. Add verb to be in the correct tense
3rd the subject in the active will be the “agent”
of the action ( it can be also omitted) BY is used
to introduce the “agent”

is easy to apply and cleans up with water. A whole week was
needed to finish this part of the job. A color was used that
