The document describes EMC's next-generation unified storage management platform, Unisphere. Unisphere provides a simple, efficient and powerful interface for managing EMC's VNX storage systems. It simplifies management tasks, improves productivity, and provides easy access to support services. Unisphere can be used to manage VNX storage systems as well as other EMC storage products from a single interface.
Before we move into a discussion of Unisphere, it’s important to summarize the new EMC VNX family.First and foremost, the VNX family joins EMC Symmetrix VMAX and EMC VPLEX as EMC’s core production storage platform offerings.The VNX family is designed from the ground up for virtual application environments—from simple, money-saving server and storage consolidation for small business, to the next-generation virtual data center applications.The VNX family is comprised of two series: VNXe series and VNX series. The VNXe series represents the entry point of the VNX family, and is designed specifically for small-to-medium businesses, remote offices or branch offices, or departmental applications where traditional storage administration skills may not be available.The VNX series is the next-generation midrange platform. For those of you familiar with EMC’s current CLARiiON and Celerra platforms, the VNX series combines the capabilities of these systems into a single modular unified storage offering.While new, the entire VNX family shares the tradition and builds on years of know-how of the world’s most popular SAN and NAS platforms—CLARiiON and Celerra. Everything EMC has learned about high performance and high reliability culminates with the VNX family.EMC Unisphere provides a common unified management capability for EMC’s VNX family and CLARiiON and Celerra products. And as you will see, Unisphere also provides a way to simplify and automate other common storage management tasks, such as replication and backup reporting.
Now let’s take a look at Unisphere 1.1 for the VNX series.
Here are common challenges that many of EMC’s customers face. Today, most solutions are siloed and focused only on managing specific domains. However, companies have multiple domains to manage, which they need to do so from a single point of control, including a way to protect their infrastructures from disaster recovery and maintain business continuity. Another major challengefacing users is the management complexityin virtual environments. Storage administrators have access to detailed information on the array, but lack visibility into how the virtual server is configured and which virtual machines are consuming what for storage resources. VMware administrators, on the other hand, can see the details of the virtual server environment and virtual machines, but lack visibility into the array. What’s needed are more tools that automate management, discovery, and reporting and make it easy for administrators to manage and report on who is using what, when, and where—making administrators more effective and productive.EMC hears from customers asking about how other customers utilize EMC’s solutions. Customers require easy-to-use support services and self-help services. In addition, they ask EMC to provide them with tools to help address critical tasks so they spend less time focused on non-critical areas.You will learn how to address these challenges throughout this presentation.
Unisphere delivers a significantly new approach to storage management. Its easeof use and sleek interface provides a simple, integrated management experience for VNX series, CLARiiON, and Celerra systems. With Unisphere, storage administrative tasks that once took hours or dozens of clicks can now be done in minutes and with less than three clicks, in many cases. Unisphere can also serve as the single point of entry for all your data protection requirements. Especially important now with Unisphere, the VMware and storage administrators are no longer ‘”finger-pointing” when issues arise. They both have visibility to the server and storage, thereby bridging the historical gap. Unisphere reduces the amount of time spent on tuning the performance of the system, and ensures administrators are spending time addressing the critical needs of the system.Unisphere also helps users with “self-serviceability” through EMC’s online support community. For instance, if a user sees a failed disk, they can simply right-click and launch into the service portal, open a ticket, and order the failed part online.Here is a quote from one of EMC’s Unisphere customers at Itron North America.
Unisphere’s easy-to-use, sleek interface provides a simple, integrated management experience for legacy systems such as CLARiiON and Celerra, and now for the newly available VNX series next-generation platforms. The Unisphere table only collects the data shown and uses caching for fast replay. It provides advanced and user-friendly user interface capabilities, including sorting and filtering. All Unisphere table data can be exported for custom reporting.

With a simple link-and-launch option from Unisphere, you can launch into your favorite data protection solutions, whether it be Data Protection Advisor for its replication analysis capabilities, Replication Manager to manage your replicas, or RecoverPoint/SE for your synchronous or asynchronous replication needs. You can also launch into Atmos, EMC’s cloud storage system. And now, Unisphere adds link and launch capabilities for the latest addition to the EMC Family, Isilon.
The FAST Suite improves performance and maximizes storage efficiency by deploying this FLASH 1st strategy. Using the FAST Suite and just a small number of Flash drives, a FLASH 1st strategy can lower storage costs and deliver higher performance levels for the most important applications by automatically tiering and serving data from the most cost-effective drive type. FAST Cache, an extendable cache of up to 2 TB, gives a real-time performance boost by ensuring the hottest data is served from the highest performing Flash drives for as long as needed. FAST VP then complements FAST Cache by optimizing storage pools on a regular, scheduled basis. You define how and when data is tiered using policies that dynamically move the most active data to high-performance drives (e.g., Flash), and less active data to high-capacity drives, all in 1 GB increments for both block and file data.Together, they automatically optimize for the highest system performance and the lowest storage cost simultaneously. In addition, the FAST Suite includes Unisphere Quality of Service Manager and Unisphere Analyzer. Quality of Service Manager provides even greater flexibility to tune the system by allowing specific controller resource adjustments to be dynamically applied to specific workloads (LUNs) as those workloads change throughout the day. Unisphere Analyzer is a powerful tool integrated into Unisphere that allows detailed VNX series system statistics to be gathered to enable troubleshooting.All of this can be simply set up through Unisphere, which eliminates the performance tuning efforts that users typically go through on a weekly basis.

From the storage drop-down menu in Unisphere, the user can set up storage pools—in this case, a “mixed” pool of Flash, SAS, and near-line (NL)-SAS drives. [Click]Next you can set up a schedule based on your tiers (Extreme Performance, Performance, or Capacity), and [Click]auto-schedule dates and times for tiering. Then, you stand back and let Unisphere tune the system and place data based on your policies.Get set-it-and-forget-it performance optimization with Unisphere and FAST Suite.
The VNX series platform is optimized for virtualization with more than 50 points of tight integration.Until today, one of the major challenges facing users in virtual environments was a management complexity gap. Storage administrators have access to detailed information on the array, but lack visibility into how the virtual server is configured and which virtual machines are consuming what for storage resources. VMware administrators, on the other hand, can see the details of the virtual server environment and virtual machines, but lack visibility into the storage system. On VNX series, Unisphere together with vCenter Server integration makes storage management in a virtualized environment a seamless experience. Each administrator can use their familiar interface to gain full visibility into virtual and physical resources, transparently provision storage, integrate replication, and access and offload all storage functions to the storage system. To further drive efficiency in the VMware space, EMC has delivered on the VMware vStorage APIs for Array Integration (VAAI), allowing the VNX series is be fully optimized for virtualized environments. This technology offloads VMware storage-related functions from the server to the storage system, enabling more efficient use of server and network resources for increased performance and consolidation.Letting the VNX series perform common data management tasks, like vMotion, result in:10-times network I/O10-times more virtual machines10-times faster response timeThe VNX series delivers unmatched VMware management integration and optimization and is ideal if you are running VMware.
Unisphere provides a hardware view with an indication of system status. It tracks key hardware components with color-coded, real-time system status and alerts. If a color changes, it can display an interactive hardware diagram with expanded views for easy troubleshooting. Note to Presenter: Click now in Slide Show mode for animation. In this example, you can see that a power supply has turned red so could be in a failed state. The user can easily right-click and order a replacement part directly through Unisphere.Note to Presenter: There are no hardware views for the NAS components.
With Unisphere Service Manager, you are able to perform several services directly from thisno-charge tool, such asinstalling and replacing disks and capturing health diagnostics.Unisphere Service Manager also ensures that your system is running the correct version of software and will alert you to downloads. All this is wizard-driven, with links to Powerlink Support pages.
At GA, Unisphere for the VNX series will be available in English. Post-GA it will also be available in Chinese, Korean, and Japanese. Here you see an example of a Unisphere screenshot in Japanese.
Unisphere continues to support EMC’s legacy systems and adds support for the new VNX series. Initially, VNX series domains will be needed. Unisphere can be plugged seamlessly into your existing environments and honors all the EMCcustomer scripts and software licenses. Investment protection is EMC’s goal for its customers.
Now let’s take a look at Unisphere 1.5 for the VNXe series.

Unisphere also tracks and presents storage growth over time, allowing you to track the pace of growth and anticipate future needs based on historical trends. Monitoring storage system health is a key part of maintaining data availability and performance. System status is always available on the System page. Unisphere displays any system alerts through the dashboard, and clicking on a hardware-related notification brings up the System Health view and identifies the specific component affected.
One of the simplest uses of Unisphere is its ability to quickly and easily provision storage for your applications. In this example, we’ll review the nine-step process of clicks to provision storage for Microsoft Exchange mailboxes.(Note to Presenter: Click now in Slide Show mode for animation.) In Step 1, the user specifies the name of the “resource” being provisioned.([Click]In Step 2, select the version of Microsoft Exchange (2007, 2010, etc.).[Click]In Step 3, specify the number of mailboxes and their size.[Click]In Step 4, the system pre-configures the storage pool; however, you can change that setting if required.[Click]In Step 5, select which hosts will access this “resource.”[Click]In Step 6, configure your data protection requirements (replication, snapshots, etc.).[Click]In Step 7, specify the amount of storage required for your data protection needs.[Click]In Step 8, confirm the configuration you have just set up. [Click]In Step 9, you have completed provisioning storage for your Exchange mailboxes.

Users can obtain license files and install licenses directly through Unisphere. Users can also understand what entitlements they have so they can remain in software compliance when addressing upgrades and maintenance requirements.
Another example of simplification is the ability to immediatelyaccess your support contracts and maintenance information right from the Unisphere interface. Review start and expiration dates on support contracts. Changes and renewals are refreshed and immediately available through Unisphere.
Unisphere provides users the ability to centralize data protection. Instead of utilizing multiple data protection practices for specific applications, Unisphere allows you to easily administer protection policies with a click of a button. Easy-to-use application wizards step the user through setting up protection for Hyper-V, NFS VMware data stores, or generic iSCSI volumes.The VNXe seriessystems have integrated protection features, including the ability to create application-consistent, local snapshotsor remote replicas through EMC Replication Manager.
Unisphere simplifies management of virtualized resources by automatically applying storage best practices—no storage expertise needed. Unisphere provides easy-to-use best practice provisioning and data protection wizards for Microsoft Hyper-V environments typically deployed with the VNXe series. This allows users the ability to create and allocate storage to applications and allows users to monitor VNXe seriesstorage for Hyper-V environments.Note to Presenter: Click now in Slide Show mode for animation.Best practice wizards provision NFS/VMFS data stores automatically through API integration. The wizard auto-configures storage to the ESX host and updates vCenter Server to see new storage. Unisphere includes support for the new Virtual Storage Integrator plug-in.
The VMware storage provisioning wizard guides you through the process to deploy, protect, grow, and administer storage resources for VMware.Now let’s review the quick eight-step process of how to provision storage for a VMware data store through Unisphere’s provisioning wizard.(Note to Presenter: Click now in Slide Show mode for animation.) In Step 1, the user specifies the name for the VM data store.[Click]In Step 2, specify the file system type (for instance, NFS).[Click]In Step 3, configure the storage pool and size. ([Click]In Step 4, configure your data protection requirements (replication, snapshots, etc.), including schedules.[Click]In Step 5, specify the amount of storage required for your data protection needs.[Click]In Step 6, select which hosts will access this storage.[Click]In Step 7, confirm the configuration.[Click]In Step 8, you have successfully provisioned storage for your VMware data store. At this stage, you can choose to set up replication locally or replicate to a remote system.
One of the most significant capabilities of Unisphere is the integrated VNXe series support ecosystem. The speed-dial-like capability provides users with immediate online access to support tools, including product documentation, best practices, FAQs, software downloads, customer communities, live chat support, spares ordering , and service request submittal.

When you initiate that order, a Service Request form appears, conveniently pre-populated with important information like part numbers, contact information, etc.

In summary, Unisphere is the centralized management solution across the VNX family, and CLARiiON and Celerra systems. It was designed to be simple, efficient, powerful, and affordable.
