- Publishers have the skills
- In November 1807 two men broke into the house of a certain Jean Alexander, a well-to-do woman from Kilmarnock on the west coast of Scotland. There not only did the burglars steal £15 in silver, £50 in bank notes and some gold and silver jewellery, but killed Jean and her acquaintance Christian Peacock. One was strangled with a handkerchief and the other with some cord. The event was cited in a newssheet that was printed in Edinburgh on November 14. The reporter called it a “ shocking murder and robbery ” a “ deed of darkness “ and opined that “ Here we see that money is even now, as in Solomon’s time, the root of all evil; and that an inordiante love of gain is likely to harden the heart ” The report also menions (maybe with a hint of anti-Catholicism) that “these men are natives of Ireland” Five days later, a much shorter article appeared in the London Morning Chronicle.
