Gillette is looking to expand its market in Indonesia by educating more of the population on shaving and proper blade use. Currently, 80% of men in urban areas shave but 80% still use knives rather than blades. Gillette's strategy is to partner with 35 schools to provide shaving seminars and sample packages to teach shaving techniques. They will also work to reach rural populations by setting up displays in 60,000 small kiosks not currently covered to provide product samples and education. Gillette estimates this new strategy could help them sell 81 million blades annually rather than the current 69 million, generating an additional $700,000 in profit in 1996 and $2 million in 1997 as the market continues growing.
